  • Dig or Separate with Slicks - 4 Link Bar angles - Let's break down some key fundamentals of the 4 Link drag racing rear suspension. Rear squat, dig, or rear anti squat?? How does the bottom bar angle impact suspension squat or separation?

    Now for the 69 barracuda, if we took it to a prepped track, I would raise the ride height just a tad, then bring the top bar down 1 hole on the chassis and test it. I would actually test it just like it is with the single adjustable strange engineering shocks to get a base line, then I would shorten the instant center a tad... Hope this helps!! Go fast, go straight! Be SAFE!

    Definitly one of yur best vidios .
    Helping me understand what to do with my gasser drag car .
    750hp stick .small tire .nose high gasser .leaf spring ladder bar .
    Im always crushing the slick .then unloading the tire ...
    It was really hard .to know where to locate the front mount on the ladder bar since Im so nose andfront end high .
    From what Im understanding .I need to lower that front mount a couple holes ...and calm this thing down .
    You vids are awsome

    I would emphasize a point Kevin made... DO NOT get caught up in numbers! They are "guidelines" as a starting point, but in the end you have to give the car what it wants. Understanding how a 4 link works is a must before making changes. Take lots of notes, "I did this, and the car did that" to use for reference.

    • @iamjam821
      @iamjam821 ปีที่แล้ว

      I absolutely agree. The numbers Kevin gives are a good guideline to go by but you can’t ever bank on those numbers being the only absolute truth that every car has to meet. Each car is different and will react different to various changes. Understanding the fundamentals of 4-link, ladder bar, and leaf spring setups and the physics and forces that are being applied will go a long way toward a great hooking drag car regardless of surface. It can be tweaked and fine tuned from there but a good baseline must be established. My dad and I are learning how to do all that Kevin is teaching with our own car. It’s only a mid 10 second 1/4 mile car but after tuning all the suspension up, we can 60ft side by side with cars 2 seconds quicker than us

    I have been watching some videos showing local tracks typical weekend racing from the 60s and 70s. It was amazing how much the cars were separating the chassis. It’s like the whole car jumped straight up to the limit of suspension travel and then started moving forward. It seems like a lot of wasted motion and time but maybe this was what was required for the track prep and tires of the day.

    Kevin, where does rear shock rebound setting come into play when setting the car up below the A/S line? What does it affect when you tighter or looser, when trying to bring more traction into play?

    Question every one says separate with drag radials ie Mickey Thompson but what about Hoosier drag radials? They are way softer sidewall than a Mickey I run 275/60 Hoosiers and the sidewall is literally paper thin wrinkle wall

    Question....My car goes straight and handles great unless I get into a fast wheel spin near the end of the track where it will kick quickly to the right every time. Would adjustments to get more weight on the right tires improve this I am thinking? Thanks in advance!

  • @henglish3398
    @henglish3398 ปีที่แล้ว

    All these angles are relevant to bar length and such…? So what makes 10degree top bar angle a sweet spot. Wouldn’t that depend on bar length/ride height/chassis rake?

  • @AustinBoil
    @AustinBoil ปีที่แล้ว

    I will add, besides the bar setups, the same approach goes for shock settings. You hear guys say I'm 4 clicks on Compression & 6 clicks on Extension with XYZ shocks. That means absolutely nothing. Who valved the shocks, what's their chassis & 4 link setup doing, on & on. AND don't forget, your front struts/shocks have a big time affect how the 4 link setup works as well.

    👍👍 on a ladder bar rear coil over is extension typically softer than compression by 4 clicks or so?

    • @KevinWilsonSBC
      @KevinWilsonSBC  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That depends on so many things... generally on a ladder bar car I have the extension a good bit tighter than compression at a very high level.... Go fast, go straight! Be SAFE!

    Got any advice? I have a fiberglass 1997 Camaro that has a tube chassis it weighs 2424lbs with me (a 125lb stick) it’s a 17” wide tire bracket car and it doesn’t separate the rear end from the body enough so it spins right away then hooks, sometimes it spins hooks then spins or hooks and doesn’t spin or just spin hooks and doesn’t spin after, I need it to plant the tires faster and keep them planted but I’m changing the converter too because it is too tight

    My big tire ladder bar bracket car works much better with a slightly uphill angle. The car separates a little with almost full loose rebound on the rear shocks. My 3 inch travel front shocks are full loose on rebound. With 12 pounds of air the tires don’t seem to crush the sidewalls all that much. Car just plain works. 900 hp BBC PG run 9 flat at 154 ish mph.
