As far as I know, the hangings actually happened on the square at the other side of the pub. That's for decoration. Forgot to mention it's one of the oldest pubs in London and was in fact friendly to pirates (like the Crown!)
So it clearly wasn't a threat towards pirates. Probably a different group of people the English didn't like...Catholics, Irish, Blacks, Spanish at one point😂😂nearly everybody in existence.
They may not have hanged people from the very post. But they did hand them over the water. The tide would come in and submerged the bodies thus bloated them. Hence the term and place wapping.
The Prospect used to be called the Devils Tavern on account of its dubious reputation, and before that it was called The Pelican, hence the alley you went down being called Pelican Stairs

My Dad was a London cabbie and when I was a teenager (16 or 17) he took me in there. Also when you take a London tour boat from Waterloo, you pass it and the guides will give you a very graphic description of the executions. Btw its pronounced "Whitbee".
This pub is also really great! It has been rebuilt from a fire using parts of a ship. Its very uneven inside with loads of short ceilings so watch your head! The top floor also has a lovely balcony to overlook the Thames.
If you come to the Webb Estate, in Purley, Surrey. you can see original stocks on the green, where vandals were locked, and had rotten fruit thrown at them. Traitors were normally dipped in tar so wouldn't rot, and their heads put on spikes on London Bridge, so would be visible for years. Pirates were put in large cages, hung from wooden poles out at sea, so were visable when the tide went out, as a warning to others. Our history was quite gruesome, we're a bit more civilised now.

Funny that right behind the noose on the background we can see the London financial centre .... talking about pirates and what punishment they deserved...
Not only London has history. Durham is known as The Land of the Prince Bishops. St. Peter's Church in Sunderland was built alongside St. Paul's in Jarrow as a twin monastery around 1,300 years ago by Benedict Biscop then there's the eastern end of Hadrian's Wall at ....... Wallsend. We're on the coast and have pirate caves at Roker and Marsden. Not forgetting the good people of Hartlepool once hung a monkey as a Napoleonic spy, they're still known as monkeyhangers. History is fun. 😊
I know this pub well - and you might have seen it before: you can visit and go inside it if you play Watch dogs legion - also - if you have ever seen the film The Old Guard, this is the pub they meet in at the end of the film.
Been in there for a beer and missed that, great historic pub though! The grapes is near there as well, one of the oldest and owned by no other than Gandalf (Sir Ian Mckellan) himself (his staff is behind the bar… no really THE staff)
Interesting is also the fact (about this location) that this pub and this particular shore was showed as the end scene of the movie The Old Guard with Charlize Theron (Andromache of Scythia) where she said Booker about his 100years ban for meeting them (immortals) .
Theres a pub in milbank where the cellar is an old prison cell of the Millbank prison. This was the prison which held people bedore deporting them to the Botany Bay prison colony (the piles from the old pier are still visible at lower tides) Its said that some had uniforms marked POM for prisoner of Milbank which became the Australian term for English people.
Just a minor tidbit, its very unlikely that a skeleton would remain on the noose, after sufficient decomposition, the head would actually detach from the body and fall to the ground.
Mudlarkers Larkin’ on the foreshore! One of my favourite activities! If you like history then give it a try! I recommend googling the rules beforehand though. Mudlarkers can be an officious bunch some of them! 🙏
