6 months ago, fell off my bike, dislocated shoulder, knee and wrist. I did not do surgery just took a bit to heal but the surgery on shoulder would have been much longer. it gets a bit to get used to looking at that bone sticking out. I use it as a reminder. I'm back on the trails, working out a bit of intermittent pain but not bad. you'll heal and you'll be back out. BTW, I'm 63 years old! if I can get through it so can you! Speedy recovery to you both!!!! love your channel.
I'm 53 an advid cyclist. Crashed in November 2020 was diagnosed with a grade 3 AC separation. I thought I would need surgery. At the very beginning your channel gave me hope. The surgeon suggested physical therapy. Fastfoward six months I'm back doing everything I did before. With a BUMP! Thanks 🙂
Glad to hear it!
Hi there, glad to hear you recovered well, how long before you could raise your hand above your head? Thanks, I'm week one into a full Grade 3 AC joint separation
Hi, No response from that guy..! How are you doing ? I crashed my bike, three weeks ago. Grade 3, physio and rest. No surgery. How's your injury.. Many Thanks Martin@@adrianphipps3257
So happy for you on your 'no surgery' diagnosis. I had the same injury on my right shoulder 4 years ago. At the time I was told that surgery only improves things about 30% of the time so I opted for no surgery. No regrets. I just have a bump now. Sometimes a little grinding, but no pain. Good luck on your healing. You'll be back on the trails in no time.
same ...about 10 years ago, hows your strength in that shoulder? mines a little weaker but doesn't hold me back
Interested to hear about any ones long time opinions after a few years . I done. This injury end of august , opted for no surgery , I have full range of movement , but feels unstable , moves about a bit doing a light bench press , more uncomfortable than pain . Due back to see consultant soon so will need to make a call on it soon
Did the bump improve over time?
I'm honestly at a loss for words. That is insane how fast you recover(ed) from this. I've never been more impressed.
"Don't listen to us, we're on the internet!" Best comment ever. Should be a t-shirt. Macky, I'm so glad you are coming along. Thanks for showing us the power of a positive attitude combined with hard work and support from those that are close to you. Been sending good thoughts your way for awhile now.
I’m on day 5 after a skiing accident - also a grade 5! Happy to hear about your surgery free recovery.
Can you share any details regards your recovery, did you rehab without operation ?
@@davesutton4198 My grade 5 was reclassified as a grade 3 and so far no surgery (6 months in). The first 2 months was hell. I did lots of physio (3 days per week), at home exercises everyday and acupuncture 1x per week. I would say I'm now at 80-90% of my pre-injury strength and I basically have full range of motion. At times there is cracking and grinding and I still have trouble with specific close-end exercises like bench press and push-ups. Good news is I can swim, play golf, lift weights etc. I'm convinced that by the end of the year I will be close to 100%. Hope this helps
@@michaelowen2472how are u now? when do u start doing pt?
@michaelowen2472 , how is it for you after 1 year? Do you have any discomfort at night?
My grade 5 ac joint injury just started I’m praying I get full strength back and don’t need surgery 😢 doctors check up in 3 weeks
How are you now, can you share your story? Thanks
I was told that my knee would be a mess forever after I had an ACL replacement. I did my rehab, and to my surprise I have had very good results post surgery. I’d bet that most of the people that have had poor results failed to do their rehab, and failed to stay positive and let their body heal. Cheers gang, glad you’ll be back racing next season. I enjoy getting to see all the fantastic places you visit.
Macky you're doing so much better than I did. I too had a grade 3 with no surgery. Really happy for you.
Thanks. Hope you're all healed up now!!
Glad to hear you wont need surgery. I'm physical therapy will be tough but you will be back stronger then ever!!!
Glad all is good w/both of you and both are healing fast and well! A lot of us take the small things for granted w/our mobility until its damaged. But sending positive vibes and prayers for the 2 of you and hope you 2 get back to doing what you love 100%.
Just got diagnosed with this injury going to see the surgeon tomorrow. Wish me luck.
You seriously had a Yoda thing going on at 3:27 haha. It's amazing to see how quickly your body healed and you could get back range of motion. All the best with your continued recovery!!
Dude I drove myself to the pharmacy the night after my shoulder surgery. Then showered, and put on a t-shirt with no assistance the next day (yes I did want to cry). Admittedly washing my hair (no worries for you) 4 days in, when the soreness peaked, was not a pleasure. Have to say you were truly pitiful sitting in that recliner, helpless as a new born baby :) Anyway, glad you are on the mend.
What grade was your AC separation ?
@@jonathanappleseed69 No idea. Surgery was after several violent separations, and then finally a tiny labrum tear did me in.
VERY comforting vid!!! I am on Day 8 of a Class 3 mit der Glenoid Labrum Involvement ("Get yours today!") and is sucks sucks sucks. Very colorful (all orange & purple from neck to below ball of shoulder, but no face/head impact) but no visible displacement til now, as the swelling subsides, the clavicle seems to climb (or the shoulder, droop). To see you raise your arm on Day 19 IS WONDERFUL.
Yipes!! Should I watch the last 4 minutes, or live in ignorance. Oh, di-LEMMA.
Awesome news!! Both of you are so lucky and heal quickly but I’m sure that is down to your healthy lifestyle and how you both are so physically fit. Don’t rush your recovery and you will be back to winning races and be a better rider once the season kicks off again. Prayer 🙏🏻 for you both.
Great news, Macky! I had the same injury (same side too) when I was younger, and the docs said I needed surgery, but I opted out and managed to heal with physical therapy and determination. No problems to this day and biking hard. Both of you are an inspiration! 😊
I just got diagnosed AC separation from a bike wreck. Good to hear and see comments of people healing without surgery. Biggest downfall is no bike riding for a while! 😥
How was ur recovery, also recently diagnosed
Congrats on your swift recovery! It’s been 15 days since I got a 3-5 ac separation from a fall skiing. The orthopedic doctor said I don’t have to get surgery, which is good news. My shoulder gets a little better every day (I feel much better now compared to the first few days). Your experience dealing with this type of injury makes me optimistic about my own recovery.
Sorry to hear about the injury but glad to hear you don't need surgery. Make sure to see a good PT and take the time to do the exercises. It makes a big difference!
SYD and MACKY Yes, I’m planning on that. I want to recover in the best way possible. Thanks for the advice!
How long did it take before you could raise your arm above your head?
Hi Macky, I also found this video when googling "Grade 5 ac separation no surgery". Thanks for the tips and good to hear about your recovery!
I also got a Grade 5 AC joint separation 4 days ago after falling off my bike (picked up road cycling 6 months ago since soccer/organized sports are a no-go due to COVID). Got opinions from two ortho's so far, the first said to do what you did and wait it out before doing a progress check next month, the other recommended surgery now but also agreed to my plan. I barely feel pain today and have pretty good range in motion compared to the other days.
Hopefully my recovery is similar to yours and again, I really appreciate you sharing your story since it gives me even more hope!
Good luck! Sorry to hear about the injury!
How are you?
I got diagnosed with a lvl 5 AC separation! I can put on a shirt on my own and relatively move my injured shoulder
I don’t want to do surgery, so please if you could, reply back with your progress and whether or not you need surgery!
Can you share any details around your rcovery , did you successfully rehab
Congrats Macky, made me smile watching you waving your arms dancing, looking forward to watch your racing videos soon (and Syd's videos of course)
I separated my left shoulder grade 3 ACL and fractured 5 ribs left side posterior in May, my recovery took a little longer as Im a bit older 55yrs, I didn't have surgery ( its free here in the UK) on the advice of the shoulder consultant and its pretty good now, my physio used to tape it for me and gave me mobility exercises. Hope your recovery continues at a good pace and your back racing next season...
That's awesome news!!!!! Look out 2020, Syd and Macky are gonna crush you.
thanks so much for the videos and all info on this. my daughter crashed her bike down some stairs 3 days ago and did exactly that to her shoulder. so glad to get as much info as possible on this damaged shoulder besides the doctor as it's fresh and scary for her.
Sorry to hear it. Hope she heals up well. In case it helps ease her mind, I am now stronger than I was before crashing and have no movement or activity limitations because of the injury. Working with a good PT and doing the recommended exercises is key, as is working on shoulder stability.
@@sydandmacky thanks so much for the reply and yes i will definitely pass that on to her. i am going to have her watch this also which will help. she works full time and is very active so this has put a stump in her time for sure but she knows it will pass hopefully sooner than later but not to push things to much either. so happy you got your step back and did the right things and no surgery
Hell yeah! I'm sure you're going to come back from this one as a better rider and person! Love the videos, especially (but not really, injuries suck) for how open you both are with your thoughts. So down to earth and open. Can't wait to see you back on the bike. You're both such badasses that strive through injuries.
So glad to hear you don’t need surgery!! Here’s to a speedy recovery!
Hi! I've been watching Your videos for a while now. And last saturday, I've also injured my arm. Now it's maybe weird but this video made me feel better about my injury. I'm in a same spot - surgery not needed. It feels good that You nów are fully ale to race ❤️ Love Your videos!
Sorry to hear it but glad to be able to provide some comfort. Good luck with the healing process! 💪
one day at a time, good nutrition to help heal better, rooting for you Macky
I don't know what you guys mean. The internet is always level headed and helpful... Heal up quick!
I hope you have a Full Recovery Brother 😎🙏❤️. I'm familiar with Over The Handlebars Crash! I ended up in the ER!
Congratulations Macky I am very happy for you, I totally know how you feel I just found out 2 hrs ago that I don’t need surgery on my shoulder as well, still have a few week of P.T. but I am so happy and happy for you. Good job dude.
Woohoo! Congrats!
Thanks for the vid mate and the time and effort.I just tore my shoulder off less than 48 hrs ago. Three Tye tear🤢 I've been through similar with my knee ACL 3 tyre tear and opped out of surgery and 12 months latter it's all good. I am hoping my shoulder will be the same like yours and nature will do its job.
I’m thrilled to hear that you’re healing so fast. You guys make excellent videos and I look forward to each new addition. I hope you both continue to heal and recover.
I had a grade 3. I did nothing. Back on the bike after 2 weeks. Have a nice bump. I see it as a badge of honor. Of course I only ride on the road. only restriction is can't do hacks squats and when I carry my rowing shell need to use the other shoulder. I would not advise surgery.
How is it now? How is the Strength, ROM, stability and the bump looking?
That's amazing. I'm so glad you have recovered so well. Still sending good vibes your way for continuing improvement.
Macky - amazing news dude! Think of all of the things you can do: all of the laundry, all of the dishes, repaint the ceiling, load all of Syd’s bikes into the van, and then her gear into the roof boxes, and don’t forget to carry in all of the groceries! (Strange, is your shoulder pain suddenly coming back?) (Kidding!) Heal well, and heal fast dude!
😂😂
Macky, putting on a t-shirt is HUGE! I separated mine and had to put on a t-shirt 12 hours later (I wear a uniform for work) and that was far worse than using my arm...which I did. Grade 3 no surgery and really good recovery after 5 months. Completely severed both AC and the coracoclavicular ligaments. I throw you positive vibes😀👊 BTW, I was POSITIVE I'd need surgery but PT was awesome and I was back on the bike being foolish by 6 weeks and 90+% by 8. You will be back very soon, my friend! And mine was also downgraded from 5 to 3! Awesome😀
does that mean the boes will go back to its place
Fully agree to not listen to anyone, especially us keyboard warriors, when it comes to your own personal recovery. I looked all over to see how people were recovering the same injury as me. The only conclusion I came to is that the only people that can tell me how my recovery is going to go are my docotrs, my physiotherapist, and also my body itself. Good luck with your recovery Macky. Those small victories feel so good don't they?
Sorry to hear about your injury, glad you're keeping in good spirits!
Really good job with recovery. Both injuries were very gnarly. Can't wait to see y'all back on the trail. Good luck you 2.
WOW! I'm so happy for you Macky and SYD as well! I have no doubt after PT, that you both of you will be training very hard over your off season. YIPEE!!
Congrats, so glad you don’t need the surgery! The slow recovery is mind-numbing.
You’ll bounce back faster than you think with good PT. Way to go!
MOST AWESOME MACKY!! Glad to hear things are going to the good side of this set back! Keep on awesomely kickin ass brother!
Thank you for this video. It makes the future of healing seem brighter.
Dude!! Great news. Just go easy for a bit. Super exciting news, congratulations !
I felt the same way when i heard no surgery to my grade 3
And how is it going now?
@ im about a year and a half in. Ive been taking my time with it. Its a very long road for some. Its a deep injury. At least in my case. I do alot of light weight, range of motion training. Bands and weights. Im building my whole arm again. I have about 93% of my arm back.
It gets weird when my body is physically tired and when I sleep but nothing that keeps me from getting rest. Im very careful about what I use my arm for. Ive forced myself to be ambidextrous.
Yay I'm so glad to hear you didn't need surgery. Listen to your PT and your body and don't push yourself too hard and you should do great. I just got to give up my crutch this week after 8 weeks! I'm being super cautious with riding cause my pelvis is healed enough to ride, but if I take a direct hit to that side I could brake it again. My goal is to be able to have a chill winter and stay in shape and hit it hard in March.
Woohoo! Congrats!
Congrats! Heal up and you’ll be back better than ever
So happy for both of you. This is great news, hope both of you are back 💯 soon!
Always a bike 💀💀
Got my MRI scheduled for the 26th. Good luck, and thanks for posting this.
Good luck!
YAY!!!! so happy to hear. Love the happy dance. You're going to get so good at exercise in the off season, get it!!!
Ill never take my body parts for granted no more
Well honestly I am glad you didn’t had to take surgery, because most of the doctors here in US will want to put a few screws and metal plates to get paid more just for the surgery.
It happen to me and I have two days with the AC separation and my dad is been orthopedic for around 20 years and thanks to him I decided to do the no surgery recovery first .
Glad to hear you recover in two weeks the video help me a lot .
You should look into Dr. Steven Struhl's Endo Button repair technique. I just had it done and was a great success. The view you hold is what most traditional doctors hold as a view, as did my initial doctors I saw also suggested. Was not an acceptable solution. Dr. Struhl's technique was the best decision I made in relation to my AC Joint injury. It was a grade 5, which was originally diagnosed by my other doctors as a grade 3. The right knowledge leads to the right outcome. Had I known about Struhl's method of repair, I would have definitely done it immediately after my injury.
Good here that you didn’t have to have a op ,looking forward to watching you getting back to where you was 👍
I've been in your situation. Crashed skiing (I teach skiing fulltime in the winter) it's great to hear "no surgery" from the doc. Evs makes a neat shoulder support/protection. It's from the motocross world, it fit great under my gear. I wore it for a year biking and skiing after my injury. Thanks for the great content!
Can you send me the link for this? Trying to protect my shoulder after an AC joint seperation while I snowboard
I have destroyed my ankle skateboarding, which is why i bike now. But recovery is hell. Most people dont have the drive you guys do. Keep going!
I’ve had 2 shoulder surgeries so I am glad to hear your not going to need one. Keep up the Life long Shoulder exercises to keep from getting a frozen shoulder as you age after an injury. I injured mine when I was 19 fast roping out of helicopters. I’m now 54 and I still do Daily shoulder exercises
Nailed it. At 50, I have to do the same thing. I had to work through frozen shoulder with twice weekly PT, and twice DAILY exercises on my own. Now...I do maintenance, and if I get lazy and skip a week...I can tell it. I still have strength in both of them, and crash routinely, but I know better than not to do range of motion exercises consistently...or here comes the stiffness and ache. And the thing is...even with surgery, I would have those same issues from the bursitis and arthritis. Like the old saying...keep going, because if you stop...you're hosed! :-)
Yoooo thanks so much for sharing your story now I can I can wait peacefully for my consult on the specialist cuz I had a fall and I just broke my arm as you did I know you you don't broke your arm but the connections between your AC that's it thank you bro now I'm more calm I am Brazilian my English is not so good!
Happy to hear you don't need surgery. That's great news!
Much love and healing vibes, Macky.
Now that IS definitely more awesome ! It will be interesting to see how Macky builds his confidence level back up to the point he can send it on trails he knows just like he did pre this injury .
I 100% feel your struggle ... I was months off my bike could not drive my car(I own a stick), lesson 1 good friend and family, it did take me quite a while to get back up and running ... I had no insurance and very little knowledge of and AC separation. it was July last year. I am stoked for you I was in pain for almost 6 months after mine. Really happy you are doing so well.
Ouch, that sounds brutal. Hope you're all healed up now!
@@sydandmacky I am doing much better. Back on a bike and having fun. Though there was a lingering fear of falling in that shoulder again for a long time till I fell on it again last month. No issues ribs sore hip a bit sore... landed on my phone in my pocket, but way less fear now so starting to get back into having too much fun on my bike again. It's great to know that an ac separation is not always so bad, though Biking with Bobo just had surgery on his
Day 32 for me this video sent me into tears thank you so much
Everyone is different in how their recovery would progress. You being as fit and strong as you are makes a big difference. My daughter was a gymnast for 9 yrs and her conditioning was paramount in her not getting injured as bad as she could have on several occasions. Glad to see no surgery required, because it's possible surgery could have had a detrimental effect.
You mean we shouldn't consider youtube comments as professional medical advice?
😂🤣😂🤣
Hey Mackey glad you're back in Action dude.
Great news, its my opinion that physically fit “athletes “recover quicker than unfit people for a few reasons.
Weight is one, general fitness at time of injury, and willingness to do what it takes to get back to their sport ”PT, proper rest and having a good outlook about return “. You know your body better than any non athlete.
Great news! Now Dane can start kicking your butt! PT for the win!
Awesome news - so happy for you!
Good News Macky! I know u will work hard in months ahead to be back on the bike racing at full strength or stronger 👊🤘💪. I see my surgeon on Monday after my fractured wrist & am hoping he allows me back on the trails
Good luck!
Super helpful video - thank you for making it.
I had the surgery this past summer, did the PT and was able to ride Whistler Crankworxs although it was a bit sooner than the Dr. liked. BTW I'm still doing PT which is more my choice. Hang in there! I know your pain, which is watching people ride when you can't.
Awesome news macky! Keep at it you two.
I went OTB and had full grade 3, lots of biometric and stationary riding. First day back on a bike was day 90 riding DH at Keystone in Co! The bump never goes fully away but don’t even think about mine 3 years later. No surgery for me, surgical steel won’t break if you ever land on it again. That’s all the doctor had to say to me.
Qq I’m at week 3 and still at night it’s super painful and hard to find a good position.
Was this your experience?
I still can’t raise my arm 75% up
@@brettcohen4122hi just wanted to know how r u doing now
Way to go, keep up the thorough recovery.
Wow - we injured ourselves at about the same time. Happy you see to be getting better and enjoying life.
Hope your recovery is going well too!
Good to see you on the mend!
You are recovering well. I am recovering from a similar g5 injury (with 5 broken ribs and a punctured lung) and my path has been much the same. My specialist had me doing less than you were doing, but I was booked in for surgery out of ED and not reached, scheduled again two days later, and at the last minute it looked a bit less severe so they decided the non-surgical route was worth a shot. . Still looks odd - strange how some days it seems more normal than other days - but it is pretty amazing how quick the human body recovers.
How long before you could raise your hand above your head?
Can I ask how you are getting on now . I have had a similar injury with 3 broken ribs and a L3-5 separation 18 months ago
Just take your time let it heal fully looking forward to more videos and have a good holiday
That's great news, guys! Back in the saddle in the near future I hope!
I am so glad to hear that you dont need surgery! But please take your recovery slow. Let the shoulder heal up before your out doing rough riding. I wish you guys the best. Have fun and move to AR hahahahaha!
I'm 2 weeks out from my crash (downhill, endy'd into a birm after all jump, grade 3+ AC seperation, 3 broken ribs). How is the shoulder nowadays? All my DR's (3 so far, physio is next week) have said it'll never be how it was before and it's honestly freaking me out a lot. Thanks for sharing your journey!
Wearing backpacks can be uncomfortable but that's the only thing I've noticed. I can do push-ups, pull-ups, lift things, ride aggressively, etc. Just make sure you do A LOT of PT and don't push it on the bike for a good while. I think I waited 2 months or so before riding outside on my road bike for the first time.
@@sydandmacky thanks a ton for the reply! Sets my mind at ease, I was worried about working out and riding mostly. I'll probably look for a good one-band backpack, I know they make good action backpacks with one strap over shoulder and a thicker waist strap that might be a bit more comfortable
I sustained a grade V AC separation from a bad crash back in March and had the same options from my specialist. After about 4 weeks, I had 100% range of motion, and close to full strength. My clavicle looks a little worst than yours (Sticks out ALOT), and I managed to get away without surgery.
Rest up, do PT and hope for the best. Good luck with your recovery.
How is your progress now?
Are you able to lift?
@@jonathanappleseed69 I am doing great. I can lift normally. Pretty much 100% range of motion and strength. My specialist did say he has never seen my situation Turn out the way it did though, so my situation may be different.
Unfortunately, you can’t stop people making dumb, stupid, offensive or otherwise unhelpful comments.
But you can stop taking those comments too serious!
Congrats on not needing surgery, but please take your time to fully recover.
Good health is something we tend to take for granted, it’s times like these that make you realize just how precious it is.
And, as the owner of the video, you can delete them 😁
Congrats Macky !! KGBS!!!
Really happy for you both!
So happy for you guys.
Wow you heal fast!! Good luck, you should be sending it soon
Thank you for sharing this experience
Thanks for the video. Sitting here with the same thing day 3 I can lift my arm above my head so there’s hope
Glad you're shoulder is recovering. 🙏🏽👍🏾
Bro thank you so much :) i got my ac joints separation to :( a grade 3to4 thank you for you're video you gave me motivation
I just got this injury and this is hopeful
Super good news, no surgery just recovery 😃 Iv been recovering all week from a inflamed sciatic nerve, been looking up treatments on TH-cam and how to prevent
I'm living this injury right now. Although mine really isn't nearly as bad as yours I don't think. 1. Day one, completely painful. Day two was confirmed I don't need surgery. Also day two I was able to do some riding on my trainer. It's day 10 and I've been riding on my trainer daily. I can almost lift my arm over my head. I can dress, drive. I'm thinking of doing my first ride outside today. Nothing intense though. I've also started doing physically therapy. You are right now, everyone is different. You shouldn't listen to everyone on the internet. Everyone is different. Still have some random pains but everyday gets better.
Great to see you don’t need surgery !
Great news!!! Here is to continued fast healing
I had same 3rd degree dislocation. Could do many things pretty quickly. One thing I suffered though was a very sensitive spot at the edge of the bone (upto 9-10months) when you touch it or with tight clothes rubbing there. Went to see my doctor and he told me it s perfectly normal since there is calcification (sort of bone healing process). All good now after more than a year after the incident.
Just done same injury - AC level 3, over handlebars of bike downhill.
Given that you're a year down the line I hope that all had gone well with your recuperation.
Same here. a month ago. Mind be asking how your recovery went
right on macky! so happy for you dude
