    George IV was so tacky, but you have to admit, he had an eye for bling. 🙂 It still looks strange to see it on someone else, I associate it so strongly with Elizabeth.

      All those coins. It was always associated with QE11. And Victoria. Not surprised Camella wore it. The bigger the better in her choices.

    I do love the notion of any particular crown being old-fashioned! Thank you for another video packed full of information. The Diamond Diadem is gorgeous, I'm only sorry there isn't an emblem to represent Wates, but we are often omitted. And how lovely to see that opening shor of Queen Elizabeth looking so happy. She is greatly missed.

    Another slice of royal insights. So many diamonds in one crown is breathtaking and just shows the extremely fine work of jewellers from centuries ago. The late Queen clearly loved the Diamond Diadem and would be pleased to see it continuing to shine. Many thanks Allan.

    Thank you Allan. This is one of my favorite diadems. When King George wore it, it was so hidden under his cap and the feathers, it disappears from sight. Interesting that this might have been the first time the Imperial State Crown, and the King George diadem were worn at the side by side. Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, usually wore her Coronation Crown.

  • @Shalott63
    @Shalott63 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

    The design of the diadem is interesting. As you know, the traditional design for English crowns is to have four crosses (usually paté) with four fleurs-de-lis in the spaces between, but this substitutes the rose-thistle-shamrock combination in place of the fleurs-de-lis. I have heard it suggested that this was beause the fleurs-de-lis came to be associated with the traditional claim of the monarchs of England and then Great Britain to be the rightful sovereigns of France, since the fleur-de-lis is a symbol so closely associated with France, and that once the French claim had finally been dropped (in 1800) there was a feeling in some quarters (apparently including George IV) that the fleurs-de-lis should accordingly be dropped too, and replaced with something more in keeping with his actual domains. But in the end the older tradition prevailed, and I think it's actually doubtful whether the coronal fleurs-de-lis really had anything to do with the claim to France originally - perhaps you know more about that?

      Just lovely, thank you. Loved the pictures of our beautiful passed queen. I think that I, like so many others, still think of her as queen. ( must admit the Edinburgh titles are the same .). Imagine how much more difficult it would be for the ‘new’ title holders, I think the king had a tough day yesterday and, at one stage m Camilla was looking at him with loving concern. First time ever I thought of her as queen. She did well. 🙏🙏🙏👵🇦🇺

      @samanthafordyce5795 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      From what I've seen, lots of European crowns from "back then" (whenever "then" was) had fleurs-de-lis on them. I'm not sure, but they may have been considered as much of a symbol of royalty as oak leaves. Perhaps someone else knows? Or, and this is a wild guess on my part, they might have been considered to be symbols of the Risen Christ as much as the crosses represent His crucifixion. Other suggestions are that the fleur-de-lis is a symbol of the Virgin Mary. Perhaps the two were intended to give the wearer the protection of Christ and His Mother; who knows?

    • @baraxor
      @baraxor 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've read the reason for the national flowers and not the fleur-de-lys was because to include them would make the Diadem a prince's coronet, and George was damned if he was going to look like an ordinary prince like his brothers.

      It's not really possible to wear that little crown unless one's hair is done up in a topknot that the crown can sit on to keep it in place, and topknots were not really the late Queen's style, whereas Queen Victoria often did her hair that way in old age.
