Well done Frazer & John! Followed Fraser's progress thru the painting process of these two armies and often tried to visualise how they would look on the wargames table. Certainly not disappointed, a grand spectacle indeed, especially the close up turn reviews.
Have now ordered a set of TtS rules. More please!👍

15mm does make large armies look good on the table. It's interesting how the use of printed cloth makes the hill disappear on the video. Looks like you had a good game.

Lovely looking figures Frazer, I love the rule set. Great fun, as Hoard says it’s rekindled my love of a range of periods, from ancient through to Renaissance. Keep up the good work chaps.

Fraser, another good looking battle report, the armies look fantastic but I have just got the end of the first hour. To add to Sid's comments on Group Moves, each command can attempt a group as their first activation and a general cannot re-draw the card. A couple of other things I noted to help with the rustiness - you do not appear to be using camps, normally each army would have one. Deep units can still move to their front on a 2+, Difficult Activations is where the 2 pips more comes into play. The General's seem to be moving a lot in the main they are attached to units (unless the army list allows for detached) and will only move to another unit when the unit they are attached to is lost such as when the General who was the light cavalry unit was lost on your left flank.
To reload a unit just has to successfully activate to shoot but reloads instead. Looking forward to the rest of the game. You might also like to know that Simon has published a new Even Stronger which contains updates on Pike units, Scythed Chariots etc.
Last one, units are within command or not, distance out of command has no effect.

A couple of points easily missed if you are new to the rules. Scouting influences first move as the player who wins the scouting cards gets to go first.
Also group moves can only be the first activation of the command, you cannot have two group moves for a command.

Great battle report. Gorgeous figures.TTS really is a fabulous rule set and rekindled my love of ancients. In the heat of the battle I think you missed that Light chariots should evade when charged by cavalry. Also deep units going straight forward is not a difficult move. Hope to see more of your reports in the future!

Finished watching the battle, John did well turning the flank with his chariots and it would have been great to see how that would have panned out.
I have a few more points about the rules to help with the rustiness:
Shooting diagonally is not counted as a difficult activation.
When the Macedonian General on the right flank failed his save, you should have drawn another card to see if he was killed, seriously wounded or lightly wounded (the latter would have kept him on the battlefield).
The Light Troops behind the Pike unit that was lost should have drawn a second card to see if it could pass it's rout test, if failed it should have been removed not receive a disorder counter.
Elephant units, although classed as Deep for manoeuvre/activation purposes, will rampage and then be lost if they receive a disorder counter unless they have been upgraded to escorted, then they are rampage and are lost when they receive a second disorder counter (page 14 of the rulebook). This would have quite an effect on your game.
Something for John, his Bowman units (if not disordered, in rough terrain or shooting overhead) can play one or two to-hit cards when successfully activated but must declare it before turning over the first to-hit card.
Great battle, cannot wait to see the re-match. Thanks to you both for your time and effort.

Very enjoyable. Love the scale of your armies, but that also causes issues, like the second lines in the center, not being involved. But on the other hand, they are reserves.

Will certainly have a look at moving the reserves somewhere else next time!

Thanks for sharing this AAR. For a contemporary set of rules I was surprised to see such a rigid I Go, U Go mechanism with no option to interrupt. Surely ancient through pre gunpowder commanders must have seen the start of the enemy’s intent and attempted to disrupt. The problem becomes more acute as the number of controllable elements/units grow and potentially worst if multi player is offered/supported. Thanks. Figures look great, videography great but the rules seem somewhat dinosaur era.

Thanks for the comments. I recommend To the Strongest as a ruleset, it's great fun. A swear jar is also recommended as the turning of cards can be emotional!!

@@vonketteringham For some reason I thought these rules came after the The King and Parliament. After spending a little more time on the original rules I may have been hasty to judge.

  • @sidbennett7089
    @sidbennett7089 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I’m commenting as I’m watching and apologies for being picky. Group moves cannot have a general redraw for a failed or unsatisfactory (eg a 10) card draw. That’s the risk, I can activate a box with a general and be sure it will happen, but a group move can still fail on a single ace, the general is doing a lot of command work to get the entire command moving so it’s too much to use his personal presence for the entire command.
