    Delighted to see you doing this ! I used to play a lot of DBM but twenty years ago I moved to the Ancient Wargame wasteland of West Cornwall. No one played any ancients so I was left with solo DBA. I did buy DBMM but trying to learn it solo was a non starter. I had thought of playing solo DBM since I know the rules inside out, but was aware that DBMM is a more detailed set. I shall be watching the rest of your videos and hope to try a solo game of DBMM 100 to get me started. Since it will be solo it does not really matter if I miss a lot of the rules.

    Great start to a promising series. DBMM is an underrated but excellent rule set. One issue is that people feel it is hard to get into and understand - that the learning curve is too steep. This series should be a great resource to overcome that.

      Many thanks. I'm hoping to compile future videos into a playlist that can be sent to new players, hopefully this channel can become a resource for reducing that learning curve. I think once people get into it DBMM is one of the best rulesets around, so I want to get more players using it!

    It's so good that I have translated part of the rules into Chinese. A definitive good set of rules if you are bored in playing head on clash games. This game needs a lot of planning and is for advanced level wargamer. The master of the masters.

    I am almost 70 years old and my wargaming with figures not virtual crap goes back to the 1960 s with Donald Feathers tone and Charles Grant and Brigadier Peter Young. Yes it was time consuming and did definitely cost money but was totally rewarding. My metal figure collection self painted and bought consists of over 20000 figures in the Alexandrian , Roman Viking , medieval , English civil war , and Napoleonic period. Of late however l have focused on WW2 all phases , the French Indochina War , Korea and early Vietnam , something l haven't done since early minitanks and Airfix figures. My new endeavour has resulted in about 4500 figures and 400 vehicles all encompassing that period l mentioned . They are all plastic mainly Itileri etc and while my eyes aren't good enough or my hands to paint them anymore l am having the time of my life. I live in a fairly remote area of NB and therefore now game solo unlike when l lived in the greater Toronto area. The rules l now employ are heavily and l mean heavily modified version of Charles Grants Battle rules unlike the much more complicated rules l used over 20 years ago., But make for a much more enjoyable and quicker result. I will mention Tactica they were great and l would revive my ancient armies if l had a real opponent. .l gave up wargaming or more on hold for about 15 years or so when other interests such as sailing , golf and gundogs took precedence but now they are history and the original passion is back. By the way l am in no way rich but comfortable in retirement and the one thing l miss in a downsized house is my previous for 25 years an 18 foot by 7 foot table . Ah well make due regardless of the level you are at and want to attain . Good gaming it's what it's all about

      Wow, you've been playing since the 1960s? What's the biggest change you've seen since then? I imagine the models are technically better now, but are there many style differences now?

    • @barbkuchynski-mc7vv
      @barbkuchynski-mc7vv ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@awordabout...3061 yes there are many different types of figures. when i started there was the old 54 mil HG Wells style , by the way i have his book on gaming as well. 30 mil 25 mil and of course Airfix 1#87 gauge. the quality of castings has definately improved and you have 15 mil and micro to add into the mix. my friends and i liked gaming battles in historical content , if an oppossing force like the Carthaginians and Romans consisted of 60 or 80 thousand troops then are units were size were based on a 1 to 60 ratio , in other words we each fielded about 1000 to 1400 figures on the table , thats why 18 foot was great , you had op[en flanks not troops occuping end to end and of course allowed outflanking not just frontal assaults. I remember one time in the late 70s when a good friend , still today from grade 9 had assembled a 25 mill roman army of the punic wars and asked me to build an opposing Carthagian army. The olympics were on and much to my wifes dismay l spent 6 or 8 hours after work and more on the weekend and painted and based 450 figures in about 2 weeks. that was the basis of what became over 1200 carthaginians. my friend Dan was also an Alexandrian enthusiast so l built a 1300 Indian army including 25 elephants and 40 odd chariots. Great stuff , if you want to further communicate dont be shy and we can exchange Email addresses or phone numbers if you are so inclined. unfortunately many who l gamed with have left the hobby or have passsed on to that Table in the Sky. Have a good one.

    Good effort. I will second Vince, it's the figures and colour that sell the period. And a caution. It's all very well matching the scale of the players at the club, but the bases need to be the same. It is worth pointing out that it uses what is a de facto standard for games of the period.

    I have the idea of waging massive armies across a table, against my friends, which rule sets best balance; ease of learning and use, adaptability between time periods, best for large armies.
    Also, if it was just me and friends, there is no reason we have to stick to army lists is there? For example, if l wanted to run Egyptian chariots, Greek hoplites, and Saxon Huscarls, the rules and the "stats" of the soldiers would work well enough, correct? That way, we could build any army look we wanted to follow the "rule of cool." Like, a knight and Roman Legion army with samurai horse archers.

      I am designing a game currently called I Will be King. It will be a little while until it is available but you would be able to do all of that.
      Its historical in that it's realistic and immersive, but not at all restrictive when it comes to army building. The first iteration will be set it in the 15th century European theatre but the rules can be applied to anything back into antiquity. It also has a campaign system, which sees you use a board game type set up alongside the wargames you play, you build a custom house, and create a few lords and duke it out, storing information on a simple app alongside your army lists to pick up where you left off. You can use any medieval unit in it, even going back into Saxon times. There's a big emphasis around morale, fatigue and manuevering formations in the battles and a good general with fewer men can overcome a larger force almost everytime with the right tactics.

      I agree, the first half was good with lots of flipping between figures, the rules and yourself, but in the 2nd half this dropped. Take a heap of photos of a game and insert those into the video to ensure something changes on the screen each 60 seconds, at least.

      What Vince said, except I am OK with the length. Also good to highlight the major differences from other ancient rules, eg elements v units, command-control in the form of the PIP system, no record keeping or markers on the table, the environment (time, "home" terrain and climate, invader/defender). Out of curiosity, does this game have siege rules? I've been looking for systems that can be used to recreate the (many) sieges of Jerusalem.

    • @irhobbies188
      @irhobbies188  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The rules have options for permanent fortifications (walls) and towers, as well as siege tower units (War Wagon Superior) and stratagems to represent defenders betraying parts of the walls, that you could combine together to fight the siege of Jerusalem.
      You would need to work out a unique scenario for balancing the forces yourself (there aren't any rules for what percentage of forces a siege defender should have vs the attacker) but there are detailed army lists for the defenders of Jerusalem and the attackers that would help you put the forces together.

      @@Jux925 I guess the purpose of this series is to promote DBMM and make it more accessible, not to compare it with rival rule sets. I'm sure there are people who can talk about other sets elsewhere but this series is sponsored by the people who made DBMM, so they're unlikely to want to discuss rival sets. If they did, they would of course want to do it in a way that made DBMM the preferred set, so where's the value in that?
