you got me at "there's even a CAT on a BEETLE!" 😂😂 but on another note: can we all just appreciate the absolute crisp, sweet-ass bass sound of your mics/voices! great job on that!
I put this on my “to buy” list when Mike DiLisio from Dice Tower had it as his top 1 or 2 games. Sadly, as everyone knows, it’s hard to find. Hoping the 2nd printing will make it more readily available and I can get it to the table. Great review! And great to hear you both enjoyed it so much.
I'm late coming to the table here, but I thoroughly enjoyed your review, your style of doing it, and the quality of information you delivered. Subscribed! Well done, gentlemen.
YES! I have it and it's a nice bite-size Twilight Imperium. Also if you like Eclipse, can I recommend Silver River? Also a short space war / tech improvement game with a really cool fleet mechanic.
Our group absolutely love this game! It reminds us of dead reckoning a bit with the random battles but the rest of the game is just so good! I can’t wait for Andromeda’s Edge from Luke Laurie which is built on this system.
The second edition (really 2nd and 3rd printing) will have the same box size as the others, the only thing that changes is the content distribution between them (as well as some things like the wash was removed). The main reason the box is so big is because the same box holds all three versions of the game. In your edition, you can see the left side of your box has spacers instead of inserts for the monsters. BTW, if you don't know, I think there is a hidden easter egg underneath the bottom insert in your edition, which will be sold separately in the 2nd and 3rd printing. The secondary reason was the Game Trayz were developed as part of the design of the game from early on which, in order to speed up setup which is sorely needed, meant that the insert volume is … not small. :D If you want to bling out this set, like Dune Imperium, there is an upgrade path to that once re-printing gets rolling (via Breaking Games for some of the exclusive/limited content like an extra 9 monsters!). There actually is a theme/story to the game which explains why the different factions are there, why Eldervale expands, what the orbs do, and even why the placement rules exist (and some of the faction powers). It was provided on a contest website in the lead up to the kickstarter campaign (there was a puzzle section to earn the Minotaur for free). It is a pity that, unlike other games like Anachrony or Wonderland's War, that world-building was not provided as a thematic booklet. Probably a miss. But they threw so much content and such (e.g. the inner top of the box has a bonus drawing), that I gather it was already a low margin game at that point that a thematic booklet was not considered/asked for. In any case, the departure of one of the designers who happened to also be the publisher to co-create his own company - they just released Flamecraft and will be releasing Andromeda's Edge which is jokingly referred to as "Eldervale in space" - meant that the game production and expansion development was in limbo for a while. That's been worked out so hopefully more people will get a hand on this game.
This game really is fantastic, but I don't think it can be must have when it's almost impossible to actually have it :D Still, great review, can't wait to see the next one!
I still find it silly that the standard edition had the big box that should have only been for the legendary edition. Everything fits perfect for legendary edition, with all the miniatures and sound bases, but was silly to add an extra 1/3 of the box size of empty space for standard. This is definitely one game that will always be staying in my collection, the Legendary Edition. Also, you can avoid damaging your cardboard covers on the trays by slightly bending the plastic tray. Don't place/remove the lids while flat on a table. But plastic lids would've been nice.
I put a dab of superglue in the cardboard at all the touch points. It's worked fine. I'm told that if you don't mind the wear and tear, not doing anything is fine also. Etsy has plastic boards available as another option.
@@toomanybarts That's the Legendary box size. I think they've released a smaller sized box version. The Legendary box takes up about 40% of a Kallax cube.
Awesome review, as always. Now a question, do you guys usually test this games together as 2 or you play with more people? Because I usually play with 4~5 guys and sometimes the gameplay is pretty different with 2 or 5 people.
You fight against the Ghosts of Eldervale. It's an API/bot design using card flips and die rolls to determine actions (much like Automa designs from Scythe, Tapestry, etc). Like those designs the bots have rule breaking. In order to keep the strategy in there, there is a "watcher" marker which helps locate the action taken to ensure maximal conflict and keep the game tight and confrontational. Strategy differs somewhat from a pure 2 player.

Fantastic Review, thank you so much! Best game review format on TH-cam!

I was able to pre-ordered one copy of the 2nd print🤩
Nice! And thanks.
Best Alternative: Eclipse Second Dawn of the Galaxy

Ahh, you are so very very right it is a much better alternative than Dune Imperium. I need to get my hands on it ASAP.
@@BoardGameHangover by now i feel like i have to go to you with the game and introduce you ;)
Yes. Yes you do ;)
Good video! For theme, they do have an appendix which is mostly just all theme. I love the art in the game.
I finally had a chance to play this and I love it!
That's amazing! Hope we get it to the table soon enough :)

Yes. That one sounds very exciting.
Great content, guys. Really like the format of your reviews.
Regroup action can be added to other worker placement games, I agree.
Great review. I haven't played this game yet but hopefully one day.
Thanks.

Is there still an existing page for the lore you mentioned for the minotaur contest?
Great review! Just got my copy 2 days ago!!😊
Let us know how you like it after playing it!
3rd printing incoming. They’re gonna have preorders on their site in the next week or so
This is my wife and I’s second favorite game! (Right behind Brass Birmingham)
We love this game, great video guys 👏
Thanks so much.
I’ve been getting away from fantasy themes but your presentation is so enjoyable to watch … 🎉
Your videos are top quality
Thanks.
Can‘t wait to watch the video in the evening!
YOU ARE BOTH AWESOME! ❤❤❤
You too!!

Another top notch review!
Why I got this feeling that this video was too short? Maybe it was so good, maybe I want to hear more about this game, maybe both :)
Maybe both ;)

The box size is holding me back from ordering. (I have way too many BG’s already and no space, so I’d have to sell 3 others, is it THAT good?)

I love the game, but I agree the box size and setup is a pretty big barrier to getting it played.
It is one of the stepping stones, yes.
Yes.. Yes... Sounds like my game... CAT ON BEETLE?!? That's it, I have to get it now 😹
:)
Sounds sad when it is not thematic. Agree with Janis, the box is big enough to fill in even 2 sentences.
Maybe in the future they will create a narrative campaign.
Awesome review, as always.

Because I usually play with 4~5 guys and sometimes the gameplay is pretty different with 2 or 5 people.
We usually play with separate groups of people and sometimes together. This one we played both ways.
now i have to get this game somehow lol
I want it!
You sold me on wanting to this play this pasted on a theme game when best alternative was Dead Reckoning. Thanks a lot…
You are very welcome.
im curious how the single player works?

I have heard that if you get your engine going the Ghosts can't really stop you. But Mike form Dice Tower praised the solo.
How about 2 players?
We actually did not try it with two, but I think this is a similar situation to Dune Imperium. Two is good but three is better.
Is this retail version?
No, it is the 1st edition - standard edition.
@@BoardGameHangover thanks for letting me know

The combat was one of the few things my group didnt like.
Interesting. Why?
@@BoardGameHangover cause one dice with value of 6, can win 3 dice with value of 5
@@johnpanagos5835 I can see how that would be annoying, yes.

Yep, that's what I said.
I recoiled once I saw the dice combat. Gross.
It's a quick and fun system. Not too much depth in it though
