      Read that you need to bleed ABS or there is some type of computer related feature when doing a brake flush. That true?

      For the i8, I followed each step in the service manual and no computer was required to flush the ABS system. Most other BMWs require this, but it's possible that the i8 does not because it was built different. I am not sure. However, because it has regenerative braking in combination with mechanical braking, it's possible that it doesn't have the same features as other BMWs in this regard.

    Hello Pat,
    Did the brake bleeding on my I8. Thanks for your video. As always, it was very helpful.
    I did use the 2 men bleeding method. Pres--- hold--release--- I am sure you know what I am talking about :)
    After I was done I felt the brake pedal a little ‘spongy’. It was definitely not exactly as tight as before.
    So I did the whole bleeding job again. This time I used your method (pressurizing the reservoir ). Sadly the brake is the same.
    In the BMW dealer repair manual it says bleeding needs to be done with the diagnosis and information system.
    That will enable ABS to open valves so they can be bled.
    What are your thoughts on this?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Regards
    Stephan

      Thank you! I'm glad that my videos are helpful. The dealer can rip people off so if you do the work yourself, it makes ownership much less costly.

      The Mighty Vac is easy to clean up. It comes apart in pieces. I used brake cleaner to clean all the parts and wiped it down with a damp cloth immediately afterward. Good as new.

    Thanks for posting the video. I think I'll give a go myself this summer using the Motive Power bleeder. Looks like it really helps the process.

    Hi Pat . After doing the job whwt is the wheel nut tightening torque. I think its 140 Nm. Is that correct?

    Pat, if I use a link here to add an item to my amazon wishlist and buy later from the wishlist, do you still get your cut?

      @PatsGarageOnline  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe. I usually see a very small percentage, anyway, so it wouldn't hurt my feelings if it didn't work.

    Hey Pat. Great video! I’ve just become an i8 owner and my brake fluid change is due soon. I have a warranty like you. How do you ensure you don’t void the warranty by doing this yourself? Thanks

    • @PatsGarageOnline
      @PatsGarageOnline  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! It depends on your location. In the US, you don't have to take your car to the dealership to have service done, but in other countries this is required. If you live in the US and you do the work yourself, keep receipts for the parts, take photos, etc. Sometimes you may have a defective part that they claim won't be replaced because they have no record of the maintenance being done on that covered part. You need receipts and evidence to show that you have done the work.

    So the fluid change is based on time and not mileage? That being the case, I have to wonder what happens if the I8 should be laid up for an extended period and it's not maintained with the charger plugged in. I guess the "clock" literally stops?

    • @PatsGarageOnline
      @PatsGarageOnline  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, if that battery goes below a certain percent charge, it turns itself off. You don't want it to completely die.
      The electric motor does regeneration so the brakes aren't used a whole lot if you don't drive like a maniac. But that Regen must have an impact on fluid life.

    One question. When you bleed the Front Brakes, do you have pressure in the Oil Brakes Tank like when you bleed the Rear Brakes?

    • @PatsGarageOnline
      @PatsGarageOnline  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I make sure I have pressure in the brake fluid reservoir at all times. Otherwise, when you open the bleeder valve, no fluid will come out. I try to keep the pressure between 1 and 1.5 Bar at all times so it works very well.

    I saw a guy using the Motive Power Bleeder and he put the new fluid in the Motive Power Bleeder not the brake fluid reservoir as you did. I was under the impression the power bleeder was a pump to push air down to the calipers taking the new fluid with it.

    • @PatsGarageOnline
      @PatsGarageOnline  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It can be done either way. The problem with putting the fluid into the power bleeder is it makes it harder to clean up. My method takes longer because I have to undo the pressure and remove the bleeder from the reservoir in order to refill the reservoir, but I would much rather do that than try to clean up the inside of that power bleeder. If you decide to fill the power bleeder with fluid, any fluid that's left in there after you are done should not be saved. It should be disposed of.
