Not many people realise that the Crimean War was fought in the Baltic and not just the Black Sea. My great grandfather was a Royal Marine Gunner on HMS Odin at the time. After Bomarsund he went with the ship to the Crimes and participated in the Siege of Sevastopol.
I guess my great grandfather was partly responsible for the ruins have taken part in the bombardment of Bomarsund fortress on board HMS Odin in August 1854 during the Crimean War.
Hey, that's an interesting piece of family history. I guess the locals didn't mind at all for the destruction of this fortress since it was the Russian military occupants that invaded there first and without the fortress and a local garrison the russian foothold was eventually lost and the island could continue towards its present state as an demilitarised island.
@@panzerfister Nice video, thank you .....but.....Not really so. The Russians brought market opportunities to Aland farmers and with the russians came businessmen's too e.g. shipsupliers and merchants. Aland was just a rather poor region in Finland until 1830,s. Under Russian flag the fleet of merchant ships of Aland grew rapidly from 1850,s and onward. (Finland was under Russian flag from 1809 to 1917 and after that until this day under Finnish flag. (And Aland Island flag too since 1954 (?).)
@@nedsteven4622 No. Russian soldiers (both russian and finnish soldiers) where prisoned after the batlle in France and Britain. Aix in France and Lewes in Britain. Especially those prisoners stationed in Britain made fancy handcraft boxes of straws and could earn some money. Im interested of your source.
