- People from across the Pacific Northwest flocked to the Cowlitz River Tuesday for the one-day recreational smelt dip on March 2nd 2021, the harvest is open from 8am to 1pm.
Location: Cowlitz River near Gerhart Gardens Park in Longview, Washington

I have done this from the Cowlitz in Kelso many times but it has been years. It was a lot of fun.

I remember smelt fishing when I was a young child about 60 years ago. They didn't even clean them - just bar-b-qued them whole and ate the whole thing.

Looks like they hit the early part of the run, which is made up of male smelt. The females, which are smaller, follow after this "pilot run".
