      Yes indeed.. The story behind the inspiration for this song makes me cry just to tell it. She was the first Native female to die in Afghanistan .. but when the snow came in Hopi lands, her father knew of her demise and that she is home with the cloud people.. heart breaking yet inspiring just knowing that the spirits of the old stories are very real

      "Native music" tends to throw off people that have never heard it because it's just so raw. Because of it only being the drum and the voice, music is stripped to the bare minimum. It's out in the open and on display. You cry from only listening to this video but go to one of our gatherings to feel that beat under your feet and hammer in your chest, I highly highly recommend it.

    Throwing cigarettes onto the drum is not disrespectful. In native american culture, tobacco is used for ceremonies and prayers. The speaker isnt, in powwow terms the MC (Master of Ceremonies), being disrespectful either. He tells people in the arena to stand, because this an honor song. Some may not know that this is an honor, so that's why he asks the audience to stand. A lot of MC's do talk over songs, but they do it to remind us what the song means.

    • @joetube450
      @joetube450 10 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      The MC could do all the explaining before the honor song begins.
      To talk over them while they are singing the song, still sounds disrespectful to my ears.

      Nakota Sherman please explain more about the tobacco. why did he break them first? does that render the offering more valuable because they wouldn't be usable again?

    • @abominationz94
      @abominationz94 7 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      Super Galleta
      You don't have to really break the cigarettes. some people like to have them intact or they break while throwing them. Again the tabacco is used for ceremony purposes. the purpose of them is to bless the drum and the singers. bless the drum because some people call it grandfather. they call it grandfather because these singers learn these songs that have been passed down to them from generation to generation. bless the singers because its used to bless their singing. to help them sing these songs very loud and proud. to sing with the heart and good thoughts. they always say, don't sit at the drum if you have negativity around you or that's inside of you. because that feeling can be brought upon others who are sitting at the drum and grandfather as well. always sing with good thoughts and think of others who need healing.

    This is the sound of a spirit you can't break. Proud of being native every single day, this is medicine for the soul and spirit. So please come back to listen when you need to feel better. Crying is natural and you see some drummers drying their eyes.

When i saw the 4 men crying on the right side, i was so moved emotionly that i also started crying. I don't understand the words of the song but i don't have to. It speaks for itself. My respect to all American native people.

    When we were kids back in the 50's, our folks would take us to various powwows and Sundance’s. I distinctly remember the Whitefish Sundance in Northern Saskatchewan. Very spiritual, and strictly managed. No cameras, out side music, alcohol. The locals built a circular enclosure about 30 feet in diameter with openings at opposite ends. A center support pole was decorated with bright cloth. Inside the structure on each side about a four circular wall was erected. One side, the men and the other side the woman would chant and blow poplar whistles all the time fixated at the center pole. And they would sing for days on end and sort of dance as the whistled and sang. Then there were give a aways, I saw horse, guns, food items, you name it, given away. Something none of us will ever see again and I am so thankful our parents took us.

      I want to learn more. I'm a musician and love so many types of music, but this is such powerful music. what can I do to learn more?

    • @adsporter4388

      Kevin Carl, Experience it! The only way to learn about these songs and why we sing them is the experience it. You'll find that most singers are open to answer questions. TH-cam has thousands of videos to offer shared by all kinds of different Tribal backgrounds. But each song has it's own meaning. This one was in memory of a loved one. The MC was memorializing that person as well while the song was being sung. It's not disrespectful for him to speak during the song, especially when he's speaking of the loved one. But, like I said...Experience it! Good luck to ya!

      carl weaselbear tobacco offerings are done sometimes after the sessions or when you have a moment alone with the elders.
      I thought it was quite odd that someone would throw the tobacco at the drum. I have seen some folks sprinkle the drum with loose tobacco before.
      It did seem callous to just throw them in the circle like that...not something I've seen ever.

    The announcer wasn't talking to just 'interrupt' and be annoying. It's the complete opposite of that. He was simply telling people to get to their feet and stand, as this is a tribute song. So if this was happening before my eyes, I'd be quick to stand up, take my hat off, and stay put until the song is over.
    And secondly, throwing cigarettes onto the drum isn't disrespectful at all. Because in Native American culture, tobacco is used for our ceremonies, we use it to pray and for a lot more things. These singers were powerful and you could hear their sincerity in their voices. And seeing cigarettes being thrown onto the drum like that made it even more powerful. Hiyhiy.

    when it comes to powwow music, these cree boys and beautiful cree girls are second to none singers, across North America, infact, the plains cree nation breeds the best powwow singers on the continent, or what we first nations refer to as, turtle island, in my opinion anyway. i know some of these guys. they hail from the plains cree country of west central Saskatchewan. lots of good singers out there. #aho #RIPDevere
