You Don't Need Discipline If You Start Doing This

  • If you use crash lists, I can guarantee that you will start to be WAY MORE disciplined! It took me ages to figure out that the reason productivity tips weren't working for me was because that they focus too heavily on managing your time and not on managing your tasks and the individual actions that you have to do.
    So, in this video I give you a three step tutorial on how to create crash lists. This is the best productivity method for beginners and will help you to maximise your productivity.
    Best,
    Olly :)

      Yeah, you’re right, it’s too fast.
      Also, the title suggests if you do this you don’t need discipline.
      But then, doing something everyday regardless of how you feel IS the definition of discipline. What you’re talking about in the video is actually developing discipline.

    • @ollystaniland
      @ollystaniland  หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      Ah that is such a great way of looking at it! I think that the reason crash lists work so well (like I mentioned in the video) is the fact that they are a beginner productivity tool. So, they are an awesome method to start developing more discipline and if you nail this, then you can progress to more challenging methods because you've developed the basic skills :)

    I have tried something similar in the past, but I have found that scraps of paper get lost very easily!
    I am currently using a ruled A6 Notebook. This small enough to fit in my pocket, but bulky enough that I notice if it isn’t there.
    Mine has a ring spine, so I can leave it open at today’s list, but still have a record of how I did on previous days, and even allows me to plan lists for future days, if I want to.
    Still a work in progress, but I am finding it very helpful.

    • @ollystaniland
      @ollystaniland  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's a good idea with a ring spine because if you don't finish a task from the day before, it's easy to put it onto the current day list. Super pleased that you have found a similar system that works for you. Thanks for your comment and welcome to the channel :)

I am very curious to hear your thoughts on my other videos. One of the best parts of starting this channel, has been tracking my progress from one week to the next. It is crazy how much (I think) I have improved since the beginning.
      Of course, I am aiming to reply to every comment because I think that it is so kind for people to take the time to say something nice, especially considering I am a small TH-camr. So the same thanks applies to you, my friend.

      I am really hopeful one day that this channel will take off but all I can do for now is keep making each video better than the last.

I’d enjoy anything as much but lately I’ve been struggling a little with finding the proper self care and time to unwind especially during the exam season when it is easier to work ourselves into a burnout , I know it is a very spoken about topic in this side of the internet but I’d love to hear your views on this is all! But nevertheless excited to follow this channel into its awesome future with any video you put. You bet I’ll be there! (Though a little later, given I’m from India) loads of love and luck!

I felt this way too but ever since I stopped caring what others think of me, my life has been INCREDIBLE.

      😅hehe. Yes absolutely!! That has been my focus too recently, to try and build a life that truly comes from a place of acceptance and love for me too, which has been quite a drastic change for me after years of people of pleasing, but I feel more fuller each day and somehow counterintuitively am more available for those around as well, and this time around from a place of abundance and choice than feeling obliged to do so. I’ve been calling some hard shots and reading your words today were the greatest affirmation. Best of wishes from my side too for all that you are to become, discover, and make of this little life!!

      No worries mate and welcome to the channel, your question has come up a few times on how to pick goals. So what I am going to do is make a video on how to do this, it's a process called 'dreamlining'.Very simply, you find 15 different goals, then you narrow it down to 3 or 4 and adjust from there. Less is better at this stage. Hopefully that helped a bit but the video will explain in more detail. Thanks for your support, just wondering what you liked specifically about the thumbnail? :)

    • @ollystaniland
      @ollystaniland  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great question. So, the three goals I talked about, we have health, wealth and mindset. Essentially, mindset would work best if you apply it to the either of the other two areas. So, for example, for me a big part of what I am focussing on is my diet. So, I recently read Food For Life by Tim Spector. This comes under mindset because it helped me understand more of what I should be eating and how to improve my health. I hope that helps you?

    • @cferracini
      @cferracini หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@ollystaniland but that would be an action to help with previous goals. It's not a new goal. • @ollystaniland
      @ollystaniland  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well, the thing is, this is a hard answer. I think that many people have the same problem as you: do you do something for love or for money? Ideally, you do something that is a bit of both, it is rare that you will enjoy something all the time.
      The next thing is that a lot of people say they would love to do something, for example they enjoy painting in their free time and then they say they would love to make money and be a full-time painter. Then, when they do this, they realise that what they actually enjoyed was the feeling they had when they were painting, freedom from their job, being able to paint whatever you want. Then, if you have to make money, you have to think about providing value to other people so you can't be so selfish and independent. Painting changes from being a passion, to a chore.
      That was just an example and it isn't always true. Look, the only way you can find this out is by taking action and you are at a perfect age to do that. So try Psychology, try Engineering and just focus on how it makes you feel. Pick the one that makes you feel the best.
      This is a really interesting topic, do you do something for love or money and I have way more ideas on it. Would it help you if I made a video giving more advice?

    • @ollystaniland
      @ollystaniland  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      For sure, I found this easy. The main way is because whenever I am bored, instead of scrolling through social media, I can get out my list and have a look at what productive things I can do instead.
      In terms of picking goals, like I say in the video, there are three great focus areas and I will list some examples of things you might want to do:
      Health - eat more whole foods, drink less alcohol, go to the gym three times a week, run 5k
      Wealth - build a social media presence, sell your first product online, learn a valuable skill
      Mindset - read more books about a topic you're interested in, learn something new, speak to more people, build your confidence
      Hopefully that gives you some ideas. Does that help or is there anything that you are still unsure about? :)

    How do you know what you wanna achieve in your life?

    • @ollystaniland
      @ollystaniland  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ah that is such a good question, especially because (if you are like me) you feel like you can do EVERYTHING but this leads to you not choosing anything. The process I have found that has helped me is called 'dreamlining'. Basically, you create five goals for the following categories: having, doing and being. Then, you pick the best three or four and outline specific goals that you want for each. It's a little bit more complicated than that and it is best to show you visually, so the next video I release (after the one tomorrow) will talk about this for you and HOPEFUlLY, this will help you :)

      @@ollystaniland oh my god, thanks so much! That's exactly it. Been talking even with professionals and they all agree whatever you want will just show up, but in a world full of possibilities which we don't even know we have... choosing something to do or be is unbelievably hard. Thanks!!

    Man ngl great way to scare pepole and then sell them the advice . any specific book or some books which helped with that?

    • @ollystaniland
      @ollystaniland  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey mate, thanks for the comment haha. I have always loved kind of telling stories I guess from when I was growing up. I would say there isn't anything in particular that has helped with that. I think the more you read, the more you notice things are slowly revealed over time. This is something I am trying to use. So, for example, if you are talking about 5 tips for beginner runners, you don't want to say the tip first. This is because if people already know the tip, they will immediately lose interest. Instead, you want to use a story or metaphor. Hopefully that makes a bit more sense but if you want to see this in action, you're going to have to keep watching my videos haha. Hope to see you in the comments again, my friend :)
