We were staying in an RV in Calipatria at the time for my father's job at the prison and were just exploring. I understand why that memory stayed in my head from then on

Nick, good job, as always. Thank you. It's amazing how quickly your videos go by. The thirty-five minutes of this one seemed more like fifteen minutes.
the first time I watched it it seemed like it was 18 minutes. But the second time I watched it it seemed like it was more like 26 minutes. But then I went to the bathroom and watched it again and it seemed like it was more like 16 minutes. But then I took a nap and watched it again and it seemed like it was more like 42 minutes.
For a "stress free" place it sure seems stressful living around most people who will steal your stuff, fist fights and arguing over petty things and misunderstandings...I've known people who get strung out and it's not good. It's like a red flag warning "don't use anything addictive" it can only creep up and get worse. It's a mind set that hard to explain kind of antisocial unless "feel your way" as to not trigger anyone.
Lived there 25 years ago it has changed everything they are doing. Is really illegal but it's just a desert. But Leonard Knight I k ew him and Uncle Connie that put cross on Salvation Mountain they are falling over in their grave. And as far a thrash goes they just don't burn it or take it to the dump. Just excuses.
The social issues and attitudes here are much like living on the street, only it's the desert. It's hard to get a sense on if the "slab" is as bad as the street, but I feel it is not a whole lot better. One thing about living here is that they have their own personal shelters with something other than a bench to sleep on. What do they do for personal hygiene and sanitation? It would be a nice place for an outsider to experience for a day, as this poster has, but a lifetime is incomprehensible to most of us.
Great content Nick. I watch all the way from Albania. I was in US a couple of times and did a short road trip once in the west. American landscape is fascinating.
Intriguing place in the California desert areas. It looks like it would be fun place just to hang out with the locals but my midwest lifestyle would be too restrictive for them. All things being equal Nick, you and your videos portray the lifestyle and community in a good light; everywhere you've been. Thanks!
I have visited these areas 2-3 times in the last 8 years. The people near the painted mountain (Salvation Mountain) ran me off and my friends who were taking photos. But the Slab City art area had a really friendly vibe.
There's only about 100-200 people that live in Slab City year round. Most of the 3000 people that visit Slab City in the winter are snowbirds who come down for the winter months and then return up north in the spring., living in their RV's and trailers! Most of the burned out trailers are the result of meth lab fires, or people that have been burned out because they broke a rule, such as being a sexual predator or thief!
I've been there. It was pretty eye-opening for me to see such a high level of freedom and low level of stress. Gave me hope that one day I could also live stress-free.

I've been out there a few times, it's definitely not for me but I'm really happy that places like this exist where people are free to do whatever they want, for better or worse. The world needs more of that.
My parents lived here in the 1980's when there were far fewer people and the area was not well known. The heat is absolutely unbelievable and to live without running water or air conditioning leads to deplorable conditions. And add to that violence and property crimes. And yet people want to live there to be free from the constraints of what they consider to be an oppressive society.
Imagine you lived there and hooked an A.C Unit up. Everyone would be trying to come over All the time. And you better Weld it to something or its getting Stolen. Lol.
Hearing people explain why they are homeless by choice (livin' in the moment man, no responsibilities, do drugs, etc), Slab City sounds like a halfway zone between homeless life and "normal" living. People are living in RV's, so not exactly homeless, most of the responsibilities of living in society are gone, but it must take some effort to keep things livable in the desert, and while they may not have to answer to the government, it sounds like their is more communal social control than in a homeless camp (that is, you can't only be so much of a dirtbag before the others gang up to drive you out or worse).
Was there a few years ago and bought some hand made jewelry from a guy. Found this place very interesting and wish everyone who lives there, best of luck. If i ever won a large lottery, i would have monthly water and port-a-potties delivered. I’m all for what these ppl are doing.
And someone would quickly appropriate your deliveries and charge everyone to use your water, the porta potties would be broken into small colorful pieces to make art. Hard to help but it couldn't get worse... hopefully.
This was the best video Nick, thank you for sharing. I've read about this place. Soon it seems we all need to get off the grid. Appreciate your videos always. And I love mappy.
Excited to see a California Road Trip series, we left about a year ago and headed to Nevada. Unfortunately the change we have seen, in even this short amount of time, has us ready to leave here too. Hopefully we can make it to Texas sooner than later! Solid videos, Nick - been subscribed to you since you were just a newbie on TH-cam lol
We have also lived, and traveled, up and down the entire state in recent history. Happy to recommend off the beaten path, or interesting places to check out.. There is a town that time forgot, called Gerber. Used the post office there and it blew my mind.
@@NickJohnson thanks Nick, I appreciate the sentiments. Thankfully I work remotely now so I can work a week or two in different places and make my decision again. We really liked Nevada but I’m sure Texas has lots of good for us too
Texas is incredibly hot and fast becoming overcrowded with Californians. It’s kinda like an in nation alien invasion. They move in, buy everything with cash and leave the original residents homeless or near homeless due to the cost of living going into the stratosphere. It’s happened in waves every ten or so years since the late 80’s. Now since California is crumbling both economically and especially culturally the pace has increased and threatens to ruin all 50 states especially where anyplace is still affordable to the middle class to now include foreign countries who are now beginning to despise the name Californian. What will happen to America when there are no more states one can afford to flee too. That day is getting closer faster.
I grew up here (Southern Cali Inland Valley) Rancho Cucamonga in the 1980's and I never heard of Slab. Never saw it on a Cali state map. This place reminds me of The Hills Have Eyes movie. Would never hope to have car trouble there. You'd disappear.
It's several miles east of Nyland. You can see the Salton Sea from there. First time I heard of it was watching Into the Wild, Chris McCandeless story. Quite a riveting read as well!
I’ve visited a few times as one of the visitors that don’t make their way to back. These folks are here because they don’t want to be part of regular society. This is not good or bad, it just is. I’d hate to be mistaken for someone looking to find someone who is hiding here and the dangerous conflict that may ensue. The sanitation is non existent. Contemplate 3,000 people in the winter pooping and peeing in cesspool’s woefully too shallow and then the bacteria breaking it down in 115* heat then next summer.
Well not everyone fits into the bubble that society demands from it's citizens. This is what exists for those that want to live differently. And right it's not good or bad. It's there life and there choice. I am all for letting people be different. We shouldn't be forced to live how the man thinks we should. In that case we might as well live in China or North Korea. If you are on the side of freedom, you are on the side of slab city.
1/27/23...WONDER HOW MUCH WATER COSTS? I'm sure there are ppl who haul in fresh water 💧 fir ppl to fill up any huge water tank they have ....such as Camper VAN Kevin has @ his AZ basecamp that he has built up this past year....b/c he expects bad/hard times ahead. WONDER how safe it would be for a single retired lady + rescue 🐕 to set up a safe/secure "home" with a locked area + huge water 💧 storage like I mentioned before. Wonder how far from more civilized area...like a small town....with grocery store/beauty salon/library/health clinic? If you had Soc Sec + EBT...+ sell home/most items...+ bring essentials/clothes/ pet/electric bike or Vespa 🛵 or small motorcycle 🏍....maybe RV or school 🚌 OR poss buy/haul in RR container + "build it out".....THAT MIGHT SUIT ME 😉..... GREAT VIDEO + shows better side of Slab City.
@@maxpower9848 not true at all. Many out there have lived there 8 plus years. Security measures like keeping your stuff locked up or on you. They have their own law and order and imperial county sheriff's cruise slab city on a regular loop
Cool place, love all the quirk! And the uniquely wonderful people and way of thinking. Nick have you ever heard of Los Osos CA? I bet not?! Right next to Morro Bay. No big city problems OR politics here! Very low stress and very few problems. Everyone gets along and we agree to disagree. We are not well known, little changes here, no sidewalks, few lights at night, we've got a few dirt roads mixed in with the paved ones. An amazing and free state park called Montana De Oro, a reserve of minature Oak trees (Pigmee Oaks) called the "Elfin Forest". An estuary so large that kayaks and seasonal hunters can get along. We are a real casual and bohemian vibe. Neighborhoods where a million dollar house is mixed in with all types from a person who has a statuaty garden, and the next neighbors chickens roam around and forage. A short 2 blocks of the business district is called Baywood Park, where theres a couple of very "local' styled watering holes and places to eat, one of which has a 10" tall painted cow-bear on a paddle board, half bear, half cow! Public concerts and events are all still free. Its a gem, I highly recommend to all, CA still has way more amazing places left than not! Los Osos is a must see and couple nights stay if your ever near the Central Coast/Hwy 1. Happy Thanksgiving all!
So glad you featured Slab City, Nick! Great video. I’ve been there many times, along with Bombay Beach (highly recommend Ski Inn for lunch - best food anywhere), El Centro, and Calexico. Incredible, unique and crazy places! I love California!!
Edward's interview is a gem. 👍 Seems that society's cancer is the progressive loss of ethics. Respect, loyalty, kindness. Thanks Nick for your approach!
@kaydee did...1. You reply doesn't really make sense. "Lot is tweaker in every small town in the USA." 2. It just is a bit scarier in a place with no law enforcement available.
I like how you captured the tape on the tree still making music. This was super cool. I just love Slab City. I often wish I could live there but I'm not well enough, I'm actually too disabled. I really like all the people you interviewed. They seem friendly and intelligent. If I was well I would build an observatory out there with the biggest scope I can find so no one can steal it. The stargazing has to be incredible! I'd need a pool though - at least a doughboy. What I like is the possibility of building whatever you want (and can) out there.
Thanks for your Slab City review. It's a great concept, and I've always loved the desert, but the drug problem is sure to really wreak havoc on this simple desert place where people long to be free.
I used to Play Guitar and Mandolin at the Stage. I would jump off the Freight Train and Hitch-Hike into the Slabs. The Fellow you talked to let me sleep in his Camper. this was 2004.
Hi Nick🖐 Been away for awhile taking care of my husband(dementia) Have missed you witty repertoire. This is great! People should pay attention, if things keep going like they are, everyone may be living like this. Stay safe!✌️
We used to train (Marines) beyond that area there. We had to cease fire one time because these freaks were hauling ass out there in a car down range of our artillery.
It's pretty much world known. The art hill, Salvation mountain. Asians photograph everything. That dog was like Keep moving along. It's gone from over 100° to 41° in a couple weeks.
I appreciate the fact that you spent time talking to some slabbers. Instead of just calling it the place with no laws, which in turn brings more bad people. The slabs isn’t for everyone thats for sure, but it used to be a musicians paradise. And if you are into playing music there are tons of people who would love to play with you.
Driving from Vegas to the Grand Canyon I was very surprised at how many tiny make shift villages there were. I heat stroke easily so I wonder how they handle 110 degrees. There are residents here on You Tube.
My version of Utopia has unlimited hot/cold running water, and toilets that flush, and lights that work; I guess that is where we differ. I would just bet that along with those things, YOU might also just LOVE modern refrigeration to keep your soy milk cold?
If you move there, Nick, I'll come visit. Nice people you interviewed. I was surprised to hear the humidity is high during the summer. A friend just went there and showed me his photographs of the 'spiritual mountain' or whatever that's called. Sure is a lot of trash laying around that would get to me real quick. I get the sincerity of the people you interviewed, I just don't get living in such a trash-filled place without a lot of other scenic beauty that I could see in the background. Man. Have you ever been to a rainbow gathering? Or Burning Man? Those would be interesting things for you to cover, the interviews you could do .....
Thanks for all the great videos from you, I saw your interview with a man at slab city with a restaurant and such, I said to myself he looks a lot one of my school friends, and when you said his name I was amazed! Pretty sure it's him! Small world! I still remember his last name! But I not gonna say anything out of respect for his privacy! (Might be wrong)! Thanks again!
Nick I've been watching your videos for a spell now and it finally clicked to me who you remind me of, Anthony Bourdain. You might be better. Your narration is both solemn and hilarious, your storytelling is so matter of fact. You should have a show on cable TV. Please don't kill yourself. Much love bro.
I laughed when that one guy said 40k to sell his spot. But the little look inside of it. Makes me think hmm maybe it's worth it. Looked nice. Wish I could have seen it all.
Where is the water? i could never live without water. for drinking mainly, for WC and for smelly stuff. the kitchen is great , pleased he was able to ditch the wheelchair. The junk would worry me too and the heat. Sadly a lot of people are wanting to live like this even here where life can be pretty laid back anyway. Thanks Nick from a viewer in NZ
Did you go to the cob village under the freeways in Alameda, Ca? It was still there when I lived in San Francisco last year. It was a black hole of jurisdiction between Oakland and Alameda so they couldn’t really kick people out and they made a village out of cob clay and colored glass bottles that had showers, a store, a clinic, pizza oven, and Benches, it was actually very beautiful.
My sister and brother in law lived close to Slab City. We went and saw that weird monument when we went to visit them. That whole valley is literally toxic with the Salton Sea is drying up. I would not recommend living there or staying there for long.
I lived there for a few months. Pretty sure at 15 minutes you're standing at the site of my old camp. Nothing left of it That dead looking tree was my shade tree.
Nick, I love your commentary. Not exactly a Huell Howser travelog, but it's honest and pretty close to my own thoughts. I'm a big fan of the post apocalyptic game "Fallout," and Slab City looks like it would fit into that fictional game universe quite easily. All they would need are some crazy robots, a few super mutants, and a supply of Nuka Cola. Something tells me I'm really going to have fun watching the rest of your videos.
The way you say "city limits!!" And 🤣 to the Summer reference. Trust me, your first couple of years here full time, you become all too familiar with the well deserved Summer reference to time it can feel like getting use to it!
@marycooper8385 everyone has unique solutions to this. Some have RVs and use the facilities in those. Others dig holes and build outhouses above them. Others have composting toilets. Tons of different solutions.
How do they take showers?? & I love your channel Nick! I love seeing the different states & how people live! It’s mind blowing!! Your Channel inspired me to get out of my small bubble & travel more to different states!
Hey! Builder Bill here. I enjoyed your video. I've lived here 24 years. I run the Range. Drop in and catch our show. One thing you got wrong is that it takes money to leave. Some folks get trapped. Vehicle breaks down, even fuel to get somewhere.
OMG, Nick... one of your most intriguing and fascinating videos! That place looks like it should be been included in the script of Breaking Bad. California dreaming LOL!
I spent a month in Yucca Valley with a girl in August of 2011. It looked like a cool place imo. The house we stayed in went on the market right after I left and if I'd had some money I would have bought it. 1985 ranch house 3br 2 full bath swamp cooler huge backyard 2 car garage huge kitchen with an island in the middle semi circular driveway in front with eucalyptus trees and yucca plants the place was beautiful 89 grand. Shortly after that people from LA started moving out there in droves I'm sure that house is over 500k now easy

They have internet and solar power all over slab city. Thus fans air conditioner etc are readily available these days
Hard to help but it couldn't get worse... hopefully.
Hmm 🎉
This was the best video Nick, thank you for sharing. I've read about this place. Soon it seems we all need to get off the grid. Appreciate your videos always. And I love mappy.
Mappy Ioves YOU!
@@NickJohnson awesome!
Hey Mandy. Sorry that you're trying to run around to find a place to live. Texas isn't bad I suppose.
Texas definitley has advantages Too hot for me though
Your channel is always real I love it
Dude I like your very well delivered narration, its like a "poetry" in rhyme and on point
I grew up here (Southern Cali Inland Valley) Rancho Cucamonga in the 1980's and I never heard of Slab. Never saw it on a Cali state map. This place reminds me of The Hills Have Eyes movie. Would never hope to have car trouble there. You'd disappear.
Not safe
An old naval base that closed down. It wasn't called slab city of course then. It's officially got an nyland calf addresses
It's several miles east of Nyland. You can see the Salton Sea from there. First time I heard of it was watching Into the Wild, Chris McCandeless story. Quite a riveting read as well!
I love your trips and stories, you just know how to reseach so well
You have massive balls to visit some of these places
Big Nick Johnson 😂
not really dude. just respect ppl and be real, honest.
This place is the Gilligan's Island of the desert!!! I like the open kitchen from the shirtless guy's place.
Honestly I respect the fact they created all this off the grid. Ingenuity at its finest.
Finest 🙄🤭🤪🤣🤣
Yea just go look up earthships on TH-cam. Those are waayyy better
The brain can do some crazy things on psychadelics
I’ve visited a few times as one of the visitors that don’t make their way to back. These folks are here because they don’t want to be part of regular society. This is not good or bad, it just is. I’d hate to be mistaken for someone looking to find someone who is hiding here and the dangerous conflict that may ensue.
The sanitation is non existent. Contemplate 3,000 people in the winter pooping and peeing in cesspool’s woefully too shallow and then the bacteria breaking it down in 115* heat then next summer.
Slab City? More like Poop City
Sludge city
😃
Sounds lovely
Well not everyone fits into the bubble that society demands from it's citizens. This is what exists for those that want to live differently. And right it's not good or bad. It's there life and there choice. I am all for letting people be different. We shouldn't be forced to live how the man thinks we should. In that case we might as well live in China or North Korea. If you are on the side of freedom, you are on the side of slab city.
This is one of the hottest locations in the world... It's not free when you think of the amount of freshwater needed to survive 😂
The cost of food and gas also it gets expensive
If you had Soc Sec + EBT...+ sell home/most items...+ bring essentials/clothes/
pet/electric bike or Vespa 🛵 or small motorcycle 🏍....maybe RV or school 🚌
OR poss buy/haul in RR container + "build it out".....THAT MIGHT SUIT ME 😉.....
GREAT VIDEO + shows better side of Slab City.
And you have to replace everything you own every few days due to theft and vandalism.
@@eileeneclark9011 many have water tanks aha people from nyland deliver it regularly for a reasonable fee
Great job on that Slab City.
So glad you featured Slab City, Nick! Great video. I’ve been there many times, along with Bombay Beach (highly recommend Ski Inn for lunch - best food anywhere), El Centro, and Calexico. Incredible, unique and crazy places! I love California!!
Bombay Beach is coming up!
I was in El Centro staying in a hotel.on.a cross country trip Didnt do much for me Hot like a freaking oven
Edward's interview is a gem. 👍
Seems that society's cancer is the progressive loss of ethics. Respect, loyalty, kindness.
Thanks Nick for your approach!
The beginning synthesizer music of the Dead Kennedys “California Uber Alles” is appreciated
For real. Surprised Jello hasn’t made a new version featuring Newsom.😊
Been there, done that! When we were there we saw a lot of tweekers. Fights were common as well. We didn't stay but a few days and moved on.
This is what I suspected it would be like,,,,
Lot is tweakers in every small town in the USA. Many more in the city's. Maybe you just haven't noticed?
@kaydee did...1. You reply doesn't really make sense. "Lot is tweaker in every small town in the USA." 2. It just is a bit scarier in a place with no law enforcement available.
It’s just a huge homeless population
I like how you captured the tape on the tree still making music.
This was super cool. I just love Slab City. I often wish I could live there but I'm not well enough, I'm actually too disabled.
I really like all the people you interviewed. They seem friendly and intelligent.
If I was well I would build an observatory out there with the biggest scope I can find so no one can steal it. The stargazing has to be incredible!
I'd need a pool though - at least a doughboy.
What I like is the possibility of building whatever you want (and can) out there.
The tape 🎶
I’ve been to Slab City before and it’s definitely a one-of-a-kind place!
Thanks for your Slab City review.
It's a great concept, and I've always loved the desert, but the drug problem is sure to really wreak havoc on this simple desert place where people long to be free.
The drug problem is the same anywhere you live in the USA. Maybe not as noticable but def the same. Epidemic levels
Hey Nick I've been a fan of your channel. I've spent a few winters out there in the Slabs.
@Bojan V meth 😃
I used to Play Guitar and Mandolin at the Stage. I would jump off the Freight Train and Hitch-Hike into the Slabs. The Fellow you talked to let me sleep in his Camper. this was 2004.
Cool!!

😂 sounds like that video game borderlands
It's like a mix of burning man, mad max and Fallout New Vegas.
Salvation mountain is a California protected landmark great vid brother!
Your road trip of California is the best
It's pretty much world known. The art hill, Salvation mountain. Asians photograph everything. That dog was like Keep moving along. It's gone from over 100° to 41° in a couple weeks.
I've always been curious about the amount of burnt places there.
Mentally ill arsonist criminals. 🔥
Sorry but the burn crap wil never go away. The OGs will ask you to leave or burn you out if they don’t like you
This is wild-literally!! It looks like a camping trip that never ended:)!-it actually would be a fun place to go hang every-now-and-then…
Yes I agree Kim!
I've been there!!!!! Super weird vibes there ugh 😳😳 I actually live in the high desert it's also bad but nowhere near Slab City.
What's the high desert?

This is interesting, but for the mostly part it gives me anxiety. But, Nick is the best person to bring us through this encampment! 👌❤️
Slab city has been like this for years & years, Its the place where dreams go to die, be careful what you wish for, you may end up here.
The new Huell Howser!!!! Keep it up man your work is amazing!
Driving from Vegas to the Grand Canyon I was very surprised at how many tiny make shift villages there were. I heat stroke easily so I wonder how they handle 110 degrees. There are residents here on You Tube.
Window air conditioner with gas generator if you have a job.
They're dealing with 115-130 temps 3 months. They stay hydrated and fairly immobile when the sun is up
This is a place that's pretty close to Utopia, we imagined but never got a chance to visit, amazing place.😮
My version of Utopia has unlimited hot/cold running water, and toilets that flush, and lights that work; I guess that is where we differ. I would just bet that along with those things, YOU might also just LOVE modern refrigeration to keep your soy milk cold?
Excuse me neighbor. I am FreeLove from the HOA. Your camper/bus does not meet HOA standards!
Incredible Video Nick!!! Soooo Cool!!! Thank You! 🎸⭐️
Show Pine Mountain Club in the middle of Los Padres National Forest (about 50 miles south of Bakersfield). It's inexpensive, beautiful and isolated.
Soonest mappi came out, I smiled and subscribed. And I knew this was going to be a good idea.
Aw Bill I think you're right. I should do that. And also - I would get an Rv here but I wonder if people would destroy it
Thanks for all the great videos from you, I saw your interview with a man at slab city with a restaurant and such, I said to myself he looks a lot one of my school friends, and when you said his name I was amazed! Pretty sure it's him! Small world! I still remember his last name! But I not gonna say anything out of respect for his privacy! (Might be wrong)! Thanks again!
wow california its definetly from another universe
This is what all of America will look like after another two years of the Brandon Regime.
E S Biden will be gone soon don’t worry
Nick I've been watching your videos for a spell now and it finally clicked to me who you remind me of, Anthony Bourdain. You might be better. Your narration is both solemn and hilarious, your storytelling is so matter of fact. You should have a show on cable TV. Please don't kill yourself. Much love bro.
I wouldn't live there full time because of the heat and no line power, but I can definitely see the appeal of not paying much just to live.

I don't think anybody can really live without water.
I never heard of Cob Village until I read your comment, so I looked it up -- very interesting!!
Nick, great story! How do they address their sewage? I just visited Slab City and did not see one outhouse or portapotty.
Looks to me like they're s*** everywhere. Do you really think people that live they're worried about sewage problems?
Composting toilets are very popular out there
Since your out there Nick, checked out the hotsprings nearby!
Agreed! When he showed the bar, Fallout was the first thing popped in my head.
Nick, you are awesome! Slab City, woo!
Yes a documentary would be great!
It might happen one day who knows ❤️

Well that was an eye opener. What a strange, surreal place. How did you find it?
Wow Nick you have tunes you’ve created? That’s excellent. I enjoy your vids, especially this Slab City. Take care
I spent a month in Yucca Valley with a girl in August of 2011. It looked like a cool place imo.
