I planted an Ark Black in my Michigan orchard several years ago. Always a prolific producer but the apples were never much good to eat. But the 2016 season has shown me the value of this tree. The apples had enough time to ripen this year and the fruit is MUCH better than in years past. We pressed some cider just today and it was a very decent single-variety cider. Then I made a crisp of 75% Spy's and 25% Blacks. The best danged crisp I have ever made. Of course in no small part to the Spy's. But the blacks were right at home in this dish.
@@tashaw3636 Yes, but a compatible variety. I think Arkansas Blacks are a triploid variety and thus cannot pollinate anything else and need a totally different variety to pollinate them. I happen to have a Whitney crab in the corner of my orchard. It's a white-blossomed crab. Most any white-blossomed crab apple will pollinate any other apple, as long as they are blooming at the same time. There are charts out there on the internet that will show other compatible varieties.
We have a local pick your own fruit orchard in Jemison, AL that has these. They came in early in 2012 so we missed most of them. We were able to pick a few and I will say that this is my favorite apple. I can them for pies and cobblers and they cook up beautifully and are absolutely delicious and also delicious as a fresh snack.
Edit: Definitely is. Went and volunteered there and had the chance to meet him. Great guy and extremely knowledgeable. If you live in the United States I highly recommend ordering fruit trees from them online or driving there yourself if you live near Virginia!
My family arkansas family grow this melanated apple. Wow. Arkansas is a golden state I'm america why cause it sits on the mississippi nile river pyramids
You'd really have to try it out before you'd want to grow a tree. I get the sense that these folks are wildly optimistic about life in general. Video reminded me of a low budget infomercial for black apples.
I Hope they are good cause I just scored at least two trees and I suspect a third in a deal for 21 fruit trees on our little family orchard start up. We are surrounded by cedar trees in the woods and all around the surrounding area, so it sure is good to hear someone else say they are resistant to cedar related fungus.
This is good to know. I intend to cut every single last one of the cedars down on my place, but that’s good to know. I am from the area that put Arkansas black apple on the map. They used to grow them like no ones business.
@@Dogonatree my comment was 3 years ago...whatever you do, don't do what I did. Look to your ag extension agent/state ag college for disease resistant varieties of trees first and foremost.

Mike Betts where are you! I've been looking all over Michigan for these appples!
Do you need more than 1 tree to produce?
@@shelbyfarage9225 Not sure how your comment escaped me all this time. I live just east of Grand Rapids on the Kent county line.
