Namjoon's been rapping since 2007. He's got like 14 years under his belt at this point to honing his craft.
The Map of the Soul era is based on the idea of Carl Jung's Map of the Soul which is a way to self knowledge. It divide the human mind in some layers.. the ones that BTS goes through are Persona, Shadow and Ego.
Persona being the social mask we put on in every different situation.
Shadow would be the repressed parts of us.. and Ego would be like a filter of our consciousness.
Next step now is to check Outro: Ego from Jhope
And follow with Jimin's "Filter" - the fourth Jungian archetype Anima/Animus representing the "true self" rather than the image we present to others and serves as the primary source of communication with the collective unconscious.

The lyrics for Persona are one of my favorites from RM.
When he's rapping the last bit in English, he puts emphasis on the 'na' in persona. 'Na' is the Korean word for 'I' or 'me', and I don't know why I think that simple wordplay is so satisfying out of all the other songs he's written.
I started listening to rap music because of RM, i love his voice and his flow, seoul is my favorite RM song so far
Right?,not gonna lie but l have always skipped rap parts of a song and didn't enjoy rap at all( l mean at all) but after listening to rm's rap songs,l now even look for rap songs.l find that amazing.

The concept of putting “pearls on swine” is a very English phrase meaning wasting something beautiful on something that doesn’t deserve it.. The fact that he uses it so effortlessly in his rap is just another testament to how well he understands language, even understanding the metaphor in his non-native tongue.

You get it. "But I'm not embarrassed anymore this is the map of my soul." This line tells me he is expressing something he was persecuted for in the past and now accepts as part of himself. There was that period haters went after him especially after he gained more attention in the spotlight. It was something he had to mature out of. He did, but it is also part of who he is and that cannot change.
I love this song since Namjoon’s lyrics in it shows why he’s the one who does their lyrics almost 99% of the time.

"This is introspective at its finest" YOU ARE DAMN RIGHT! i didnt have the words when i first getting into this song but thats exactly how i feel! Its so deep in so many levels. To be able to define yourself...its the most sensitive topic, and a question without solid answers. The fact that BTS, RM specifically to bring about this topic of defining oneself with the influence they have upon the world...are going to change so many individuals. Our society is so broken these days, and i've said this before and ima say it again. I believe BTS was chosen to be the one who can triggers what our society has lack these days and bring something positive to the society in their own way. bts being young adults in their 20s and doing all these positivty make me want to support them more bcs i truly feel our world, we all need a little bit of BTS to make it a better place
You got it right! an Army Made an analysis. She found 26 times the Korean pronoun “I” or "Me" in the lyrics, which are the same years he had when writing this song. And the clothes representing 1)the Idol, 2)the rapper, 3)the leader, and Namjoon (school uniform). You got right about the giant RM too. In the lyrics he mentions his map of the soul (that he found the same as the search on BU hehe), the path to love himself, meaning the change of his stage name, he no longer goes by Rap Monster but instead just RM (real me). This is one of my favorite songs that give me energy and love the message. (sorry I had to edit my first comment had many errors). Love your reactions we are the same when listening to them hahaha.

Some time ago someone asked me why do I like bts? ... why do I like bts? Why is it mandatory to get an answer for the things you like? It's just stupid. But one of the things that captivated me the most is how they show the things they feel behind the music, with the rhythm of the song and the lyrics of it.
For sure is something really different from what we know as "average songs". And that little detail makes these 7 men change our perspective of what we know as music.

Fun fact: main inspiration of map of the soul album and this song is carl jung’s book map of the soul-they talk about jungian theories of psychology in the songs. Persona is one one of 4 of his psychological archetypes: Persona in his theory is our outward face, which is what RM is rapping about. The second achetype is Anima/Animus which is our masculine/feminine side--this shows in Black Swan, masculine lyrics with feminine choreography. then you have Suga rapping Shadow in the album, shadow is the source of creative and destructive energies..then you got Jhope rapping Ego which in the theory is our unified self, self acceptance, self actualization.

The rapline's songs Persona, Shadow, and Ego in their Map of the Soul 7 are actually the core message of the whole album. And the entire album is inspired by the book on psychology "Jung's Map of the Soul". This is why they are amazing. They just don't make songs. They make masterpieces.

Kim Nam-joon is truly special 💜
Namjoon is the main rapper of bts and it is for a reason. He's the best. Even the hiphop community labelled him as an s tier rapper which is a good ranking. Most ppl have really forgotten that he's not only the leader and the one who speaks English but also the main rapper and main songwriter in most songs. In be-hind interview he said that after writing lyrics for others he has only few words to write in his rap bcoz of using all good lines for other's part. Yes he's that selfless. Sometimes i think rap monster needs to come back to remind everyone. But I still love how he's evolved throughout the year. I feel bad that despite doing so much ppl still rank him the last among the best rappers. Actually in bts everyone is the best rapper. For me it changes everytime depending on the song. But for most ppl once you've chosen a bias, you can't see past it. No matter how much others are better in a particular song you'll definitely think your bias is the best. This is sad bcoz there are only few who have bias as namjoon so definitely most will rank him last. For most ppl namjoon's rank is 7th in terms of rap, vocals, visuals, dance, even songwriting and I've even seen ppl saying other members will be better leader than him. The gap between burden he has as a leader and all the blames he gets is too wide. Ppl alwz discredit him. The funniest thing is that when armys praise him for good lyrics ppl question them whether namjoon wrote that specific part and ask to give credits when due. But when it comes to all those past apparently problematic lyrics, they've put all the blame on him as if they know he wrote that particular part. So it's discredit him for good parts and blame him for problematic parts. Those ppl can't even stick to a narrative. I hope ppl learn to appreciate namjoon afterall he's the reason why bts exists. He's the backbone and glue of bts.

AT LAST!! I've been waiting a long time you react to this song. Everything is RM in this MV. Rapping style, his deep thought, outfits, hairstyle and gestures and so on.
I cried a lot when I first saw this comeback trailer, because finally he did what he wanted in every aspect in this MV. For a long time he conceded for other members & his group and couldn't express 100% himself in the regular albums. (Of course there are great mixtapes.)

wow im absolutely blown how you were able to get the context of "whether im a dog or a pig but people come and put pearl necklace on me" despite the cultural difference. Yes u were a 100% correct in grasping what he meant by that. he doesnt see himself as someone so high but like a pig or dog, so if people put a pearl necklace on a dog or pig, they wouldnt know the value the pearl holds anyways since it doesnt matter to them. thats how namjoon is comparing that he cant understand how people put them on pedestals because he himself sees himself just as an ordinary person. You are the only reactor i've seen so far who has caught on.

As others said PERSONA is the front he puts up to the outside world. And i like how the video shows different PERSONAS of RM. the normal guy, the rapper and the idol (you can see it at the outfits). I personally like it because he‘s spitting facts. Everyone has different personas they show to different people or social circles.
I've just read the latest BTS interview on Weverse. You can witness each member's thoughts, perspective for the future and introspection. RM is a thinker and his quest for "Who am I?" is definitely at the core of his being. All 7 interviews are amazing and shine a light on each member's unique struggle to better themselves. One thing is sure...it's not easy. 🌟

Yeah, so I adore this song. Listen to it all the time. The lyrics are so deep and layered and make me think. But it's the rhythms and the musicality of his rap in this that has it on my daily obsession list since I don't speak Korean and don't understand the words while I'm just listening while working or walking or driving. His rap is not only stunning, but it is so beautiful at every level. Just like AgustD's makes me cry and my heart ache as I'm listening to it without understanding the words, and J-Hope's has me dancing around trying to dance and float over the beat with him. Thank you again for your reactions, you are one of the few that I watch as soon as they come out because you love it and express it, and you make me think too.

Cuz hes the leader he gets the brunt of EVERYTHING, and these people usually always start their complains with "but Namjoon did this...but Namjoon said that...but Namjoon" (Kim Namjoon is RM's real name and its three syllables)

Map of the Soul is the name of thr album and persona is the name of the song. When you see in the title comeback trailer is the first song of a new album they are showing is their comeback. The same with Love yourself (Album) and singularity (song). And through out their songs and videos when they mention shadow they are refering to all that comes with fame.

Did you know, in official ranking of best 100 bts songs of all time, this song ranked no. 15 in the list😍 the first solo song of bts to rank this place, the first 14 songs was for the whole group, like spring day, dynamite, no more dream, as a group, and then here come persona of rm to rank 15 among all their songs😍
Persona unfortunately didn't get what it deserve, people always keep comparing RM with other artists for no reason, even in the fandom, they keep comparing him with Suga, we never see anyone compare JK with V or Jin or even Jimin, people feel OK to have multiple singers in this group, but when it come to RM, they start to compare him with the other two rappers, jhope and suga
If anyone compliment RM for his rapping skills even his personality or anything else, they jump in and start to mention the others, they keep saying no suga is better or go check jhope, suga killed that rap, jhope can do better and all this nonsense things like why can't they accept the fact that RM is great by his own, and if anyone compliment him that doesn't affect the rest of the group in a bad way

there are references/elements of "shadow" in several of BTS' songs in Map of the Soul: 7, including in their "Black Swan" mv (Suga, J Hope, RM have their moments in it, too).

the fantastic part is that it's a trilogy based off of carl jung's map of the soul philosophy. there are 3 main aspects to understanding one's self - 1. persona (image you portray and show others) and this is what rm is talking about here. he's afraid he'd forgot who he is because of that image and yeah you're right, the idolization. he was conflicted. but in the latter part, he does say it's okay cos that image aka his persona is also a part of him.
same goes when suga tapped 2. shadow being the dark side, the one we try to hide and bury deep down. and in that song, as you've seen, the latter part is that he embraces it too.
lastly, is the 3. ego or the balancer of persona (light side you expose too much) and shadow (the dark side you hide). and this is by j-hope.
you see, the overall message is to face and accept all these sides to reach self-actualization. 💜
