Carl Swan Tree Song

- This is a song that came to me about 5 years ago when things weren't exactly going the way I had envisioned them to be. I was at one of the lowest times of my life and when that happened I turned especially to the gift I was given and my drum. Rather then thinking about myself in what i was going through, I sat alone and looked towards the sweat lodge near the bushes and thought about what the world was going through. The world as i know it is home to my children, knowing that I am alive and my children are alive, breathing the same air that i breathe.
Life is beautiful. When you look at the trees you see them reaching to the sky giving thanks to the great spirit, they too fall but they keep trying to get back up. They try because they know as little as they are when they grow they have a purpose in life, if they fail to come back to us it is because we failed them.
The water that we drink is as sacred as the woman who carries us, without water we would not survive, without the woman we would not be here. All that our ancestors have believed in is within our grasp and I truly believe are calling us to do what it is the great spirit intended us to do as human beings.
The ways of the Anishanabe people are to listen to the land, love and respect it, there are many different ways we can see and understand Creators love for us all.
Enjoy this song, Ki Chi Miigwetch. Carl Swan
Thank you to everyone for your comments. I've been having a rough time lately and haven't been too active online but I will do my best to keep in touch with everyone. What I have been tell everyone is that with these words to the song, it is about hearing your inner spirit of why ever you may be going through in life and connecting yourself with what we need to do to work together, to make each other feel like family no matter what direction we come from. To know the song is to feel the song, that way you will understand the words. Understanding that everything we have is life and needs to be loved an respected, the true meaning of creators vision.
I wish that the great spirit can always enlighten your step. beautiful song makes our being travel the world of the great cause of life
Carl Swan thank you miigwetch
Hi Carl, I absolutely love this song and your voice chi megwiitch for putting this out here to share with us. I wanted to ask if you may be able to share the proper words with us in the language and English and if so may you message me back please.
I'm born in Greenland therefore I am an inuit. I can not understand native american language, though we have some words that we call the same. Like water, reindeer and the most basic names of the wild. Anyways.
I was eating and did mind my own business while listening to this particular song when I suddenly could not hold my tears back. Sorrow and homesick over..believe it or not, the vast lands and my people called Abenaki tribes in the 16-1700th. century. I miss my traditions. Our proud culture and the contact with the nature. I mean..what?!
The only thing I have connection with native american history is, that I am really really afraid of wolves😁 Especially them white ones in which one of them is my spiritual guide as I am a socalled clairvoyant and seer of the future.
Anyone to explain this, please.
Thank you. I came because I am dreaming of Swan trees. I hope your path is easy and all your burdens light.
Carl Swan .... I have to tell you something.
This song got to me deep, in a way few do. So I thought I'd send it to my brother and see how he reacted.
We're both white, raised Christian. But my path went down a more "red", spiritual road than my brother Mark. So I've heard a ton more drumming and singing than he has -- powwows, ceremonies, sweats, DVDs & online stuff. It's part of my life although not a huge part. I find stuff in Native music I can't find anywhere else.
Mark and I were raised in New Mexico, surrounded by Native influence. So both of us have something in us that pulls at us that way, although Mark chose a more traditional Christian path than I did. That said, I wondered how my brother would "hear" this song, how deeply it would reach. He very rarely hears drumming and singing.
He just texted me with this:
"I read his comments. Made me cry. He beats the drum like the beat of a heart.❤️"
That it reached deep enough to make this mainstream white Christian boy cry says a lot about what you've done here. I cried too, but although that was very unusual for me, I wasn't terribly surprised, given the depth of this song.
But somehow this song broke through mainstream cultural barriers to allow someone to feel it on a spiritual level and even make them cry.
THAT surprised me.
You've got something I haven't heard in any other singer/drummer.
Thank you for your appreciation 🙏. Whites are becoming the new native Americans. It seems like to me anyway. We need to preserve native american culture, and we could use all the help that we can get. Miigwetch
This song is so heavenly. I stumbled upon this song after searching for the meaning of a "dream catcher" on Google and I saw the word Ojibwe. Searched ojibwe on TH-cam and I saw Carl's song. I'm west African but can relate so much with this song, almost like I'm been called home, like God wants my attention, to love humanity more. Isn't it so beautiful how these African, Indies, Latin American, Amazonia, Caribbean songs sounds alike? We are all one race and that is the HUMAN RACE.
Exactly

This is a beautiful song. I was looking for a song to honour the tree in ceremony for all the gifts the tree provides us. The sacred tree provides physical and spiritual protection by providing material for homes and ceremonial lodges. The tree provides protection from the sun and firewood provides protection from the cold and heats our grandfather rocks. The tree also provides the material from which kayaks and canoes are made. It is the central pole of unity for our people. It provides nourishment by growing fruit. When the leaves fall to the earth in the fall they provide nourishment to the land. So many gifts. Too many to name. Thank you for this beautiful song.
Still listening in 2020.
This song always helps lift my spirits.

Today August 3rd. 2023 This world is so crule. People won't stop hurting people. Our people are stronger 💪 then anyone can think. They have been to hell and came back. Some of them not. Leather Creater lead the way. Let the trees sing you songs , the grass give you breath, and the rivers tell you stories.
Thank you

You have inspired me by your suffering and the climbing out of the pit that you fell into. Your song will be there in the wild where I go to, like you, honour our creator. In our darkest times, may we be reminded of the overwhelming love that is given to us, as it beats within us, like your drum. Your language and voice are of great beauty. I am honoured to have heard them.

Boozhoo wachiye Carl Swan I just wanted to thank you and give you good blessings. I am very fluent with the language Ojibwe, Cree, Oji-cree and can adapt with many dialects, I am very proud to have kept the ways of our cultural traditions and walk that good way of life but anyways a very special and close friend of mine showed me this song (nigaamowin) a few years ago and was very moved by this song and asked me if I may translate the words to this song and so I did the best of my knowledge, so my best friend he past away 2017 and I think of him everyday and I cry for him many tears, he comes to visits me in my dreams, and everytime I dream of him this particular song I can hear every time I start hearing the soft beat of the drum, and he sings it as he sang it when he was full of life and always invited me to sing with him, but we sang together for many years in our drum group and we've became more like brothers and I do love and enjoy singing this beautiful song and my children love it and our friends and family are touched by it and it is a very special song and I thank you again meegwech
Kraig Moonyaz miigwetch!! Miigwetch!!!!
Kraig I am trying to learn this song and I do not know Ojibwe, just a few words. Would you be willing to share the translation? I would like to know which trees I am singing to or about or is it all of them. Migwetch . This song moves me as well and I spend a lot of time praying for the trees and talking to people about the trees here in the NW where ivy and morning glory and drought are killing so many. Amy
Boozhoo, my husband and I would also like to learn this song. If we could offer tobacco we would. Please let me know if you can share the words (lyrics) in Anishinabemowin along with their translation. Miigwetch.

Friend...wow...your a good singer...great thank you
Boozhoo Carl, I found your video a few years back and loved the sound of the drum and words you sing. In June 2019 a new granddaughter was born to our family. And being her Koko, and wanting to give her the best, when I would help put her down for her naps, I would play this song for her. She would lay her head on my shoulder as I rocked her to sleep. The reason I played this song for her was because I observed that when ever she was near a window, she was always looking up and the only thing I could see that may have caught her attention were the swaying of the trees. And being the new spirit that she is, I thought she must see the spirit of the trees. So I play it for her. Miigwech for the beautiful song. It uplifts me. I am trying to catch the words so I can sing it too.
Tiniki Mr Swan! Such a beautiful song! Thanks for sharing it with us all!

I still love this song, I have been singing along with it but I’m not native enough to know what it’s about or it’s meaning. My native heritage was stripped from me and I have been learning on my own. Only thing I remember from when I was little is going to powwows and reservations, and I got to tell you I’d do it again and stay if I could.😞 But your voice fills me with joy and pride. ☺️
I thank you for this song my daughter an I had breakfast listening to it .She came for a visit an it brought memories of when she was young an we would sing together.
Wow!! I don't understand a word you are singing but the love in your voice for this flower of life the tree .. I would love to hear more n thank you for touching my heart brother.

I'm a Viking of Ont Province and study and learner of the Viking's and Odin says this sound's nice.........:)
So beautiful and your words on the description were heartfelt as well.
Several years ago I to went through a difficult time, a heartbreaking and worried time. What kept me centered and grounded and not carried away with fear was meditating on the oak tree. How the roots were deep and flowing, reaching far and wide, touching other roots. How the trunk was strong, how the limbs reach high and produce leaves and fruit, how many call it home and how it reaches for the sky. The strength and roots protect the tree, hurricane s may break a limb off, but it's for regrowth
I am like the oak tree
This meditation and pondering on the oak tree softened my fear and gave me strength and courage to continue
Thank you for this song, though I do not know ypur language, I felt you heart
Miigwetch your song gave me some uplifting spirit when I feel at my lowest point in time, everyday anishinabwe people go through are sometimes very intense & the sacred things we have in this life to still be able to teach our younger generations & even the older ones.

Great thanks my friend. ❤️🔥
2019 and I still love this song
Today I say goodbye to my prayer tree, a 120+ yr old maple tree that I have nurtured and loved for the past 13 yrs. The city is coming tomorrow to cut it down so they can put in a sidewalk and charge me thousands of dollars for it. I have been so devastated over this. I can't thank you enough for this... I needed this today SO badly. I will be playing this song as I do my last dance around my tree and lay my last offerings of tobacco and sage and cedar at her base.
Can you please share the words to this song so I can learn to sing it?
Migwetch for the comfort your brought me today!
