1: Superman (James Gunn) As a life long DC fan, the last decade of films hasn’t always been easy to watch. But every single thing I’ve seen about this movie leads me to believe it’s the dawn of a new golden age for DC and the revitalisation of the comic book genre we’ve been waiting for. If this film is truly as good as I think it will be it will more than make up for the bumpy road it’s taken to get here. James Gunn has yet to make a superhero movie that’s less than great and he just possesses every quality as a director that I want to see more of in franchise filmmaking. High expectations are a dangerous thing but I truly believe that we could be in for one of the best comic book movies of all time. 2: Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning (Christopher McQuarrie) When I thought Dead Reckoning was outstanding and still not one of my top tier favourites in the franchise I just can’t help but be in awe at the peak level the Mission: Impossible franchise is operating on. It’s so nice to have a franchise I can rely upon and if this truly is the final instalment I think this is as good a time as any to conclude on the high note. I keep talking about experiences when I mention the movies I’m the most excited for and The Final Reckoning feels like it will deliver that in every sense of the word. 3: Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery (Rian Johnson) Rian Johnson is one of the best directors working today and the first 2 movies are as close to perfect as Murder Mystery’s can be. There is no reason for me not to expect a film on the same level and I cannot wait to see the unique approach that Johnson has on the tried and test tropes this time. Of all the films listed here it may be the one I’m the most secured in believing it will live up to my expectations and I truly believe when all is said and done we’re in for one of the best trilogy’s of all time. 4: F1 (Joseph Kosinski) Top Gun Maverick exceeded every expectation I had and solidified itself as one of this past decades best action movies. Joseph Kosinski hasn’t always hit for me but the idea of applying his Top Gun technical prowess to the world of Formula One seems conceptually like a technological marvel. It’s one of the movies I’m most excited to experience in a theatre this year and it just feels like an event film in the making. 5: The Running Man (Edgar Wright) So the fact that I got to work on this film for a few days definitely adds to my excitement, it was a great experience and shaking Edgar Wright’s hand was a bit of a dream come true. I may not have liked Last Night In Soho but given the high quality of the rest of Wright’s filmography I’m not going to let that impact my excitement for this film. I never would’ve expected something like this from Wright but at the same time it feels the perfect type of film for his sensibilities. I’m anticipating one of the most purely entertaining films of the year here in a way that only Edgar Wright knows how to provide. 6: The Fantastic Four: First Steps (Matt Shakman) If the MCU is ever going to make a comeback I feel like it’s going to be now. For the first time in a while I’m actually excited for every new movie they have coming out this year. This one in particular because it’s past time the Fantastic Four got their due and this seems like an MCU film with real vision and a voice behind the camera which I’ve been wanting a lot more of from with this universe. There‘s a lot riding on this film (and their entire 2025 slate really) but I have a lot more faith in them to succeed than I expected to. 7: The Battle of Baktan Cross (Paul Thomas Anderson) To be totally honest, Paul Thomas Anderson hasn’t always vibed with me as a director. I just frequently find myself more impressed by his films rather than actively invested in them. That said though I’m always interested to see what he does next and I have a very strong feeling that this will be the film of his that turns me around on him. The cast is outstanding, the few story details we’ve heard really intrigue me and I just like the idea of him doing something a bit more mainstream. I’m hoping I’ll finally get what everyone else seems to get from his movies with this one and at the very least I know it’ll be a fascinating experience with a lot worth discussing. 8: Marty Supreme (Josh Safdie) There’s just so many elements working in this movies favour that gives me all the faith in the world that it will be truly great. I’ve had limited exposure to the Safdie brothers but what I have seen has left a strong impression and I’ve been eagerly anticipating getting a new movie from either of them. On top of that I think Timothée Chalamet is one of the best actors of his generation who I trust to pick interesting projects since he’s rarely let me down with the movies he’s chosen to star in up till now. A24 is also one of the best studio around just now who consistently put out interesting and unique movies and the fact that they’ve sunk so much money into this tells me it’s something worthy of my complete excitement. 9: Sinners (Ryan Coogler) The trailer for this alone sold me on an original horror with a good hook but the fact that it’s also Ryan Coogler just takes my excitement to a whole new level. I’ve been wanting to see him get out of the franchise world and now that he has I can’t wait to see what he does with a purely original concept like this. It seems like the kind of film where you can theorise about it endlessly before and after release and those are some of my favourite movie going experiences. 10: Frankenstein (Guillermo Del Toro) I could not imagine a more perfect fit for Guillermo Del Toro than a Frankenstein adaptation. It immediately conjures up images to me and this feels like the perfect thing for him to do next. Netflix usually only release a few stand out movies per year and I have totally faith this will be one of them and one of their best works overall. 11: Wicked: For Good (Jon M. Chu) - Honourable Mention 12: The Pheonician Scheme (Wes Anderson) - Honourable Mention 13: Jurassic World: Rebirth (Gareth Edwards) - Honourable Mention 14: Captain America: Brave New World (Julius Onah) - Honourable Mention 15: Materialists (Celine Song) - Honourable Mention
