    @wdworking I have to say that chisel is really good. I am really happy I brought it back to life for the video series.

    Askwoodman THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH for telling joeynuggetz not to use profanity on your channel. In addition to your great videos filled with great information, I love the fact that you do NOT use profanity. I hate hearing or reading profanity. Thanks again and I will continue to be a fan and viewer! Keep up the good work!

    This type of sharpening is trying to make two planes meet at the smallest dimension intersecting line. The more refined this line the sharper the tool. The side to side motion covers a lot if linear distance really fast while removing material close to the edge in a more polishing manner. It has worked really well for me to produce a very durable sharp edge very fast. Thanks for writing.

    Thank you for this informative video. I have quite a few chisels I have bought over the years that I can get back into shape now.

    I do not use compounds. This mix of water and Simple Green (50/50) is a cutting fluid. This works great on the diamond stones I use to hold the cut particles in suspension.

    @smfield I tried that years ago but just did not feel the extra effort yielded a substantially better or more durable edge. It is a method many use but I have found for my work, when I just have to stop in the middle of an operation and give my tool a fresh edge, my four stone method gets me right back to work in just a matter of minutes. And often I just need to hit the edge with fine/extra fine on the diamond stone. Craftsmen working alone get set in their ways. I will try them again. Thanks

    That General jig is readily available at Woodcraft, Amazon, and many hardware stores. It is not perfect but when you weigh the low cost and the versatility of the design that allows for holding odd shaped cutting tools (which most of us have some of) it is really the best value in my opinion. And since it does not roll on the stones, the effective stroke is almost 100%.

    Thanks a lot man! I always used some kind of oil to sharpen my chisels and your explanation makes total sense, I will never use any kind of oil to sharpen anything again..

    It is a 50/50 mix of water and Simple Green All Purpose Cleaner. Simple green is a great non toxic, biodegradable product that is inexpensive and works fantastic as a cutting fluid. And even in this cut mix there is no rust promotion. I do not even wipe my drill press table off and no rust at all. It works great for sharpening and for drilling too, and I spray it on my hands to keep them clean.

    Can you get Simple Green in Australia? I have a Norton two sided stone (course/medium) that I use my mix on with only great results. The only thing to be cautious with concerning Simple Green is that it can oxidize aluminum if left on for extended periods of time. Keep in touch and let me know what you decide. Allan

    Bought myself the general jig and diamond stones and have had great results using your techniques. When i set the jig up without a chisel in it on my flat surface one of the rear black wheels is off the surface about 2mm and because the jig rocks slightly my sharpening results are slightly skewed. Maybe my jig is faulty. Does your jig sit straight without rocking without a chisel in it? Thanks Adam

    I bought the general sharpening jig and your right for the cost it works well just need some practice with the set up. What was the cost for the diamond stone from DMT and who did you contact from the company?. Could use a little help in this matter. Thank,s for your time making the video and the effort.

    Great job with these videos. Have you tried doing microbevels? Then you would not have to hone the entire surface on each stone? Thanks for sharing this. I like the idea of 50/50 Simple Green and the General sharpening jig.

    You took it from scary dull to scary sharp! Do you do a final stropping with compound to get a nice polish?

    It works well. Have you seen the latest sharpening series I have featuring my new sharpening jig invention? My new tool company VerySuperCool Tools has shipped to them 5 continents with only great reviews. It solves all of the problems every other jig does not. Max stroke, odd shapes, extra large, extra small, continuous easy bevel adjustment, works with any thickness or material of abrasive. It also has practically no learning curve. Made in USA.

    Hi! I have a questiob regarding sharpening plane blades,chisels and carving gauges: do you use the same grids for all of them(for all stages of sharpening) and do you prefer sharpening stones or paper?
    thank you!

    Sorry to hear something I recommended is not working just right for you. It should sit flat with no rocking. Will you please look at the little axle pin the wheels ride on to make sure it is properly seated? Keep me posted. Allan

    @jtcpeanut I consider this site a two way educational site and cursing at one another does not advance understanding and knowledge of woodworking. I do not want any of the visitors to my channel to be offended. I ask nicely once, but will block users who can't exercise basic manners. Thanks for writing.

    I don't sweat the double facets or if indeed you have a hollow point in the middle, unless of course it is huge. As long as the front is sharp and square that's all that is needed for the chisel to do it's job. Anything else is just wasting metal.

  • @djjazzyjoshbitch

    When I set my honing guide its always clamped on the rounded part of the chisel. Its a roller type. Do you run into that? and if your guide is the answer where can I get it.

  • @AskWoodMan
    @AskWoodMan  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oil creates a sliding space. Plus who want all that oil all over their hands and everywhere else? DMT calls for using water but I feel the Simple Green/water mix works better and does not promote rust.

    Spent almost an hour to find this video. The one who uses Simple Green as sharpening lube. Might I ask what is the dillution ratio? And can it be used on wheatstones?

    • @AskWoodMan
      @AskWoodMan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      50/50 water to SG. I only use this on diamond stones.

    • @lilystrong9870
      @lilystrong9870 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AskWoodMan Thanks. I also read that for waterstones, the ratio needs to be 1/100.

    So what is the thinking in your side to side technique with higher grits?

  • @AskWoodMan
    @AskWoodMan  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Denny, Those stones are the 2 sided smooth DMT stones 2x6" and can be seen either on Amazon or Woodcraft. They really are a great value. And with the General type of jig, you don't need really large (which are expensive) stones. Feel free to write me at askwoodman @ gmail if you want to have a further discussion about getting your sharpening setup in order. Sometimes a few simple pictures can make words more complete. Keep in touch. Allan

    Check out Video 4 in this series. I show a cheap plexiglass holder that is easy to make. I have since switched to 1/8" steel because I kept breaking the plastic as much as I sharpen. I have a new sharpening jig I came up that I have a new series here on my channel that has more sharpening demos. In this new series you will see a new version of a stone holder that really works well, that I just made from scrap steel. Thanks for writing and keep in touch. Allan

    At what angle do you sharpen your chisels?

    • @AskWoodMan
      @AskWoodMan  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Ralph Caliendo Generally 25 deg. But the angle can be plus or minus no problem. The main thing is a dressed sole and clean facet. A 27 or 28 deg bevel is still going to cut fantastic if properly sharpened.

    @joeynuggetz Oil is a poor cutting fluid for this type of sharpening because it creates a sliding space ie lubricant that keeps the steel from fully contacting the diamond. Please do not use profanity on my channel.
