stunning...so stunning I kept listening to it a few times despite the horror sound quality and low video resolution. thank you for uploading this performance.
We’ve attended this amazing, spectacular performance at the Met six times. We never get tired of it. It’s a shame it’s being retired with a new production.
This fine production is the benchmark of what Grand Opera should be! I saw it in 2023 near the end of its run and will never forget the spectacular visuals and their overpowering effect on me. It was really something to see in person and I will never forget seeing it.
I swear this great opera production was staged in 1929, not 1989 with all those singers masquerading in black face. You cannot convince me this production of Verdi's great opera couldn't find a person of colour in the opera world who could sung those parts in freakin 1989.
That's irrelevant now. You have productions now where Aida is white and Amneris is black. I do pity though that they used to paint singers. It was just wrong to do so. But it was a different time.
1. Aida is not an easy part; requires many high Cs. 2. All the characters are supposed to be Egyptian or Ethiopian; none of the principal singers are Egyptian or Ethiopian. All of Verdi's premier singers were white. But fortunately there is something called costume and makeup. Nobody seems to have complained that the dancers look like they were spray painted tan.
People don't appreciate old Italian music anymore. This is the music we adopted after the Jews forced us all to become Catholic. It is apart of our tradition no matter how depressing it might sound. Never forget. Italians used to be Native Americans.
Maravillosa opera. Insuperable.

Many thanks.
Everytime I see these vintage videos of James Levine, it saddens me, knowing that his career and his life would eventually end in disgrace.

Non è vero!!!
We’ve attended this amazing, spectacular performance at the Met six times. We never get tired of it. It’s a shame it’s being retired with a new production.
Why is it a shame?
@@rst7243because the new production pales in comparison. I saw the Frisell production at the Met 5 times over the years.
The best Aida !!! Thanks for sharing ~~ ^.^
Corelli's Aida is available in youtube. don't settle for less
I play it again and again!
We will never have a performance of that greatness!
