    "Death, or even worse, injury" is an accurate depiction of how a person would feel after getting shrapnel lodged into their face at airbag speeds and living afterwards.

    Just wanted to ad that there are 2 squibs(inflators) on modern air bags. You can tell just by the 2 connector's on the back of the air bag. One is for full deployment and the other is a smaller charge(60 to 40%). The smaller charge is used when the driver or in the case of front passenger is under 97lbs(each manufacture has slight differences) or in lower speed accidents.
    Neat fact, those yellow wires and connectors are gold plated to have very good connections needed for hi speed signals from the SRS module in the event of a crash.

    Sodium Azide was not the propellant used in the Takata recalls that chemical was subject to clumping together in humidity. the propellant is a group of small cylinders that vary in size as to the amount of fill of the bag and the pressure required to escape the vinyl cover or dashboard. The azide does not have the clumping problem and thus does a controlled burn releasing the Nitrogen at a pre determined rate. The Takata propellent formulas clumping changed the controlled release to one fast instant deployment.

    I was an Electrician at a new Inflation Systems in Ga. One gram of the propellant in theirs was equal to the same amount of nitro gliserin. They had sniffers that detected the propellant on a micron level explotion proof drop doors and blow out pannels. And a rubberized plant floor because it was the same type of plant that in the 90s blew in Sarasota Fla. they now know there must of been alot of the propellant in the air A man hit a small staple or other metal object with a push broom caused a spark on the floor somehow They found cinder blocks 5 miles from the place. Yeah the start up of that place in Ga A pucker factor of 10 plus. The word for the day we all nervously said was Boom

    Another good video. I would emphasize that whenever you buy a car new or used, go to the manufacturer's owners page and register your car. Manufacturers use this to contact you with recalls and safety information. I bought all of my cars used and have registered them with Ford, Honda, Lexus and Mazda, and each company sent me an airbag recall notice. As a note, Ford has been the fastest on actually doing the replacement. I am still waiting on the others, but at least they notified me.

    • @speedkar99
      @speedkar99  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the feedback. Yes the airbag recall is important, I decided to get mine done a few months ago. While doing some research on the recall I was surprised at how little information there is on what happens during the recall, so I made this short clip to show what's inside.

  • @lyndagruen2047
    @lyndagruen2047 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Nice video! I would point out: I believe that airbag manufacturers are moving away from sodium azide, due to its toxicity, and ammonium nitrate -- as has been used by Takata -- due to concerns of volatile shrapnel ruptures of the inflators.
    I don't know about in Canada, although I am assuming it is the same everywhere: airbag manufacturers are, I believe, now switching to guanidine nitrate as the chemical used in the reaction producing the gas in the bag. Guanidine nitrate is believed to be less toxic than sodium azide and less prone to violent shrapnel rupture than ammonium nitrate. Hopefully that will remain true over time.
    That said, I agree: It's best to play it safe and leave the handling of airbag inflators to folks who have been professionally-trained in proper handling of them. This is because that there is likely some inherent risk of explosion and toxicity regardless, due to the nature of the materials we need to use to get airbags to inflate in time to save our lives (until we can come up with something better, anyway).
    One final remark: For anyone interested, Battelle Innovations has a slow-motion video here on TH-cam of a Takata airbag inflator -- "pen-style", rather than "pancake-style", if you would -- actually exploding into shrapnel. Scary stuff imho.

    Within approx 200miliseconds there is not gas pressuried inside the cushion. Takata recall was due to pellet tabs inside the inflator, during car usege those tabs hit each other and eventually created something like dust so it can be easilly ignited and release huge force in short amount of time (should have not been damaged and keep pellet shape so it can release pressurized force during longer amount of time)

    If i take my corolla in for air bag recall:
    1. What do they change?
    2. How long should the job take?
    3. How can i tell if they really changed anything?

    • @speedkar99
      @speedkar99  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +sean craig they change the inflator behind the cover. You can only tell by removing the airbag and checking the serial.

    • @lyndagruen2047
      @lyndagruen2047 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      And that fix should not take long -- Mazda estimates the process to take about 1-2 hours for their vehicles, for example -- provided a non-defective replacement inflator is in stock. That's where the wait can drag on for months sometimes.

    Hey, great video. Quick question for you. I need to take off the front plastic cover where the emblem sits on from my Toyota airbag. I don't need to remove the inflator itself right? I should be able to just remove the screws holding the cover to the horn springs and remove it? Any tips? I know a lot of mixed info out there regarding the inflator exploding but if it's off the car and there is no voltage then there shouldn't be a risk should there?

      It's a common misunderstanding that we'd suffer in such situations, but the truth is (held by research) that our happiness doesn't depend on our limbs being all in tact. There are other factors, and we humans suck as estimating what would make us happy or unhappy.

    I have heard that we should never do "contunity test " with a multimeter on airbag connector.... Is it true?

    • @speedkar99
      @speedkar99  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea you shouldn't because the small voltage can make it blow

    • @dewyatt
      @dewyatt 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@speedkar99 I really think this might be a persistent myth. Don't all these squibs require something like >1A @ 12V for a few ms? A normal functioning multimeter is never going to be outputting anywhere near that. I think manufacturers recommend against testing just to avoid any potential liability (as a general CYA and not because there is a likely risk).

    The vent holes are not to make the bag deflate so you can gain control on the vehicle! They are there to deflate the bag when you hit it, slowing you down.
