WESTY70 been wrenching for nearly 30 years and guess what, if there’s a way to save time and or effort, I’m going to choose to save said time or effort. Not that I’m implying head bolts or lower rod cap bolts should be run in with an impact.

I have to say one thing and that is That you could save alot of time using Air tools or electric to speed things up. Some of the videos scared the living Shite out of me because my friend got killed when a jack failed. Sorry to say it but your Bus proping seems very hairy to me .my nerves are SHOT. My Dan and I just completed a restoration on his 1957 BelAir. It was an incredible time. It has been far too many years since we worked side by side like that. Many weekends spent wrenching together, the occasional butting of heads, but the best bonding experience.

Scott... love your channel! I am a licensed Electrician with 37 years IBEW, have been an avid RV.er forever, have set up a couple off grid solar cabins, and we just bought a 1963 4106! About your inverter issue... Here is my opinion and suggestion from what I got of your video yesterday.... Remember only when you are using shore power is your Bus actually grounded, while on gen or inverter, it's floating... in your sub panel you are correct, do not bond the Neutral and grounds together. I suggest you idintify the 120 volt circuit or circuits in your sub panel you wish to have on your inverter. From what I remember, one or two circuits can flow through the inverter when it is not on, then when it is on it will power them? I don't have the book, but I thought that was how you explained it. My bus has a 7000 watt Gen but only a 30 amp shore power cord that they just plugged into it... With 58 amps available, I am suprised it has not burned up..lol... I am ordering a transfer switch for it and a 50 amp shore power cord and will upgrade my main electrical and video for my TH-cam channel. Fire back if you have questions, would gladly help you through it. May need a return favor some day! Cheers... Glenn
roverdad your son dounds like my oldest daughter. My younger daughter on the other hand is Daddys girl. Hunts, fishes & will assist in the repair of what she breaks/burns up. The only prerequisite is that when we rebuild something it cannot be with stock parts. Stock parts = no help from her lol.
Watching you and Tyler working together reminds me of a day when my brother, his lads and I were working on an old Land Rover. My brother & I are both "ambidextrous" when it comes to metric & imperial nuts but at the time his lads weren't.... I came back from a tea run (we are British....) and his lads are frantically digging through tool cases looking for a "Ten-eights" wrench and can't find one. Needless to say it only took me seconds to find the right one. I think their education was less incomplete by the end of the day.

Scott, I echo many of the others comments about the substandard work done by that machine shop. Your time is money too. You are so easy going about what they did, but I would've been down there showing them that video. They surely can't be the only shop in town. It's inexcusable IMHO. That said, the most remarkable thing today is that; It Didn't Rain!

A gear wrench set and 3/8 Milwaukee M12 stubby impact and M12 ratchet would save you so much time, they fit everywhere the big impacts and ratchets won't
Totally agree, ratchet wrenches are huge time savers. They are the first set of tools I grab when working on anything mechanical. Also what you said about a pair of M12 (or the new brushless 20V like my buddy just got, would love a set but my old M12's still work too well to justify replacement) tools would have made this go so much faster.
I agree - my stuff is snappy 14v but is sized similar to the Milwaukee tools and I find myself using them pretty much ALL the time. They're just so fast, especially the cordless ratchet in tight areas.
Every m12 tool I've bought has been great. 1/4 impact, hammerdrill/drill, driver, hackzall, and circular saw. 3 batteries and 2 chargers will get you through most FML situations. I've drilled marble, resided a garage, cut plumbing, exhausts, swapped engines and transmissions, intake manifolds, etc.
May I suggest either removing your ground from the battery or at least take your wedding ring off. I arced mine to ground removing a battery cable and ended up with 3rd degree burns all the way around my ring finger and the sides of the 2 fingers next to it
I've seen a wedding ring vaporized and a guy hanging by his. When I walk out the door in the morning my wedding ring goes on the hook were my keys hang.
Pass on battery powered impacts and nut runners they are expensive and have a short service life. Air tools now that’s different story, good ones lasts for decades if oiled and can be run in the middle of nowhere using a CO2 or Nitrogen bottle setup. If you go to auctions often time a bottles and regulators can be purchased pretty cheaply.
gullreefclub actually, the use of air tool is steeply on the decline. As for running them on a bottle of nitrogen, unless you want to be carrying a 120 cu.ft. Cylinder around with you, they’re pretty worthless. With the brushless motors & lithium packs in quality modern cordless tools and the availability of aftermarket replacement batteries...cordless is the way to go. I with the exception of my needle scaler I rarely use my pneumatic tools nowadays.
I don’t know if I would say it is what it is after looking at the stuff they failed to do per your request and were paid for to boot ! Your much calmer then I may have been for sure ! Have you used this shop before ? Who knows maybe a newbie did the job ! Much easier on a bus then under a cab ! Lol
MrShobar exactly. Shop may make 10 to 12 K on a job and the tech gets whatever the flat rate book says reguardless of the amount of hours spent on the project.
You should go buy a set of left hand drill bits. The come in very handy for drilling out bolts/plugs. They usually catch at some point and just unscrew the problem.
Your buddy doesnt think gear wrench are good tools? I say they are exelent. A bit square and sharp on edges. And sometimes too big to fit box end on. But exelent quality. I can't say i watched most of your video. But it did help me to get head off my 4-71. Had all bolts out. But wasnt sure about amount of force needed to remove it. Didn't want to break anything. Also all the years of using electrical tape i never thought of the tab thing to remove it. Which is quite odd. I do that with rolls of packing and masking tape so i can find end next time i use it. Lol then i resort to fighting elec tape when removing it. Anyway , thanks for the video.

Probably is, but at the end of a long day with a bunch of other little bs issues with holes and plugs we were not in the right mind to notice what it was. That’s the same hardware that came off the other head. Same holes. It must be a clearance issue in this one for some reason
Did anyone notice the power tool Used? Human powered, 98 percent of Detroit 2 stroke mechanics prefer to tear them apart with human power because if something doesn't feel right they can correct it. An air or electric power tool would simply rip something apart. No bs true feelings from most old school mechanics.

The spring was just a minor issue at the delivery that was easily fixed. Also highlights the need to check any item you get a delivery of to see that it's correctly assembled. The studs were more of an annoyance though.

I sent my C-15 into a machine shop for crank turning and resurfacing the block, repair bushings, and they took the whole week off for the 4th of July off, the whole shop. They already had it, no way to get it out of the building. Nobody cares to do a good job, or have a good business model any more.
Mrs. BGM does an awesome job running the video cam! It probably stays a lot cleaner, too. If I were in your shoes, having been on the losing end of 2 jobs done by Y&S, I'd be considering taking my work elsewhere. This isn't great advertising for the quality of their workmanship. Just my opinion.

It is too bad you had to screw around prepping the new head . Too bad the machine shop got a little sloppy. I would call the machine shop and let them know they kinda of fu__ed you up. Oh well , looking forward to hearing it run 👍✌️
Just seen an MCI think sky cruiser (junkyard) with the roof going up after the driver and windows up top but all the windows were gone and it was filled with gas tanks. Next time I have time to go there I want to see what if it has an engine in it. Maybe a 12V71 that would be awesome if thats what it has.

@@BusGreaseMonkey Then who bolted the GREEN PAINTED bracket and GREEN PAINTED BOLT to the side of the head as it looks like the bolt used is too long and that is what is sticking into the hole.
To bad you can't figure out a way to shoe-horn an air-to-air inter-cooler in front of your radiator. You know , have one built, or find one that will be a close fit. Shoving hot boosted air into a super charger, boosting it and heating it some more, then feeding it to the cylinders, I cringe a little. Diesels run so much better with inter-cooling. But i get it, they ran them that way, and it worked. I've run Lucas for years in my diesel engines, but I will have to look into that slippery stuff you guys were talking about, saw you adding it a few videos back. That machine shop would not be getting any return business, I can see one thing sloppy, but that many.....yeah, I feel your pain. Hope you can get it on tomorrow morning, be a shame to have to wait until Monday.
When you get to putting the turbo on it, will you have to upgrade the injectors and will the radiator be enough to cool it? 6-71T's make more HP & torque than standard aspirated. You say it can run hot now.
Did anybody else notice the Grade 7 bolts? I’d never seen that before. Edit: That ‘hunk of metal’ is the tip of a machine screw that is threaded into the end of the head. I would spend some time trying to find out why that screw is fouling the threads. Is something missing that was being held down by that screw?
How much fun is the v8 or 16 to work on?? Do you just pull the whole thing out or can you sneak into each side to get access? The 6 looks ideal to wrench on!
Isn't shoddy work you pay for great?? I would have a talk and show the owner your video and see what he has to say about it. The gentleman who worked on it is not helping the shops reputation and I would think that if done correctly, the owner would thank you for being understanding and constructive. A restaurant's only as good as it's last served meal.
Some of those fuel lines look a little questionable better carry some extra hose and some worm gear clamps in the old tool box. I bet your liking taking it apart with a fresh clean job you are going to get spoiled

You are too busy now with the head but when you do get back to the inverter. I installed a Xantrex 3k pure and I made a sub box. I used pop up breakers, 4 circuits using a plastic junction box to house the breakers and related wires. Only drawback is the pop up breakers can not be switched off but if I kill the feed to the inverter with the inverter turned off than the circuits are off. My reason was space but it was also a little cheaper getting the breakers on ebay. I have used it for 4 years now with no problems full time living. One of the circuits feeds my convection oven and another the kitchen outlets , once I had the kitchen pop due to too many appliances plugged in. Easy to make your own bus in the plastic box and not have to modify to isolate the bus bars if you need to especially if you are only having two circuits just use split bolts.

We have them, we just dont always use them. We take our time and have fun when we are working on our stuff together.

We just drilled it out a bit then ran the easy out it. It eventually came out.

You better use a hammer and tap the valve to seat the keeper to the retainer
It is too bad you had to screw around prepping the new head . Too bad the machine shop got a little sloppy. I would call the machine shop and let them know they kinda of fu__ed you up. Oh well , looking forward to hearing it run 👍✌️

head was set up for a turbo engine shoulda just swapped on the turbo now! lol.
Just seen an MCI think sky cruiser (junkyard) with the roof going up after the driver and windows up top but all the windows were gone and it was filled with gas tanks. Next time I have time to go there I want to see what if it has an engine in it. Maybe a 12V71 that would be awesome if thats what it has.

We have not even had a bolt in that hole yet. So i don’t know what you be talking about. And there is a big thick bracket that attaches there
@@BusGreaseMonkey I think they are saying that it looks like the bolt holding on the bracket or plate to the side of the head (Left side of the frame of the video) is too long, and has broken through the casting into the bolt hole, leaving the metal obstruction that you have had to deal with. my terrible drawing my clarify i.imgur.com/vGEnfqM.png
@@BusGreaseMonkey Then who bolted the GREEN PAINTED bracket and GREEN PAINTED BOLT to the side of the head as it looks like the bolt used is too long and that is what is sticking into the hole.

To bad you can't figure out a way to shoe-horn an air-to-air inter-cooler in front of your radiator. You know , have one built, or find one that will be a close fit.
Shoving hot boosted air into a super charger, boosting it and heating it some more, then feeding it to the cylinders, I cringe a little. Diesels run so much better with inter-cooling.
But i get it, they ran them that way, and it worked.
I've run Lucas for years in my diesel engines, but I will have to look into that slippery stuff you guys were talking about, saw you adding it a few videos back.
That machine shop would not be getting any return business, I can see one thing sloppy, but that many.....yeah, I feel your pain.

When you get to putting the turbo on it, will you have to upgrade the injectors and will the radiator be enough to cool it? 6-71T's make more HP & torque than standard aspirated. You say it can run hot now.
I already upsized the injectors for a turbo. I also had an additional row put in the radiator. Super hot days 905-105 will always be an issue

Did anybody else notice the Grade 7 bolts? I’d never seen that before.
Edit: That ‘hunk of metal’ is the tip of a machine screw that is threaded into the end of the head. I would spend some time trying to find out why that screw is fouling the threads. Is something missing that was being held down by that screw?

How much fun is the v8 or 16 to work on?? Do you just pull the whole thing out or can you sneak into each side to get access? The 6 looks ideal to wrench on!
In-line in my fav. V usually has one side easy and one side hard to get to. It’s a rule i think. ;)
The V engines usually are tilted so one head is nearly vertical and the other horizontal.
BTW, it's called dog earring the tape, it's an industry term from printing
Make sure you didn't get any metal chips in the head when you drilled out the plug

Isn't shoddy work you pay for great?? I would have a talk and show the owner your video and see what he has to say about it. The gentleman who worked on it is not helping the shops reputation and I would think that if done correctly, the owner would thank you for being understanding and constructive. A restaurant's only as good as it's last served meal.

Some of those fuel lines look a little questionable better carry some extra hose and some worm gear clamps in the old tool box. I bet your liking taking it apart with a fresh clean job you are going to get spoiled
Machine shops don't like to do handwork as a rule, they can charge more for machine time.
It looks like that bolt in the hole was coming thru from that bolt on the side of the head

You are too busy now with the head but when you do get back to the inverter. I installed a Xantrex 3k pure and I made a sub box. I used pop up breakers, 4 circuits using a plastic junction box to house the breakers and related wires. Only drawback is the pop up breakers can not be switched off but if I kill the feed to the inverter with the inverter turned off than the circuits are off. My reason was space but it was also a little cheaper getting the breakers on ebay. I have used it for 4 years now with no problems full time living. One of the circuits feeds my convection oven and another the kitchen outlets , once I had the kitchen pop due to too many appliances plugged in. Easy to make your own bus in the plastic box and not have to modify to isolate the bus bars if you need to especially if you are only having two circuits just use split bolts.
