They actually have the same fuel and ignition tune. The difference is ride by wire restrictions put on the R. Basically, imagine like it is always in a slight rain mode. Ride by wire is how you get Rain, Road, Sport, etc... You twist the throttle a certain %, and the ECU reads that, and decides how much throttle to actually give you, based on the ride mode and those tables. The RS delivers full power in Sport mode, while the R holds back a bit. That's the only difference in the tuning, and that's why the RS makes 10hp more up top. You can very easily use TuneECU and an Android device to go in and put the RS throttle tables into the R bike's map, and that will unlock the R to deliver the full top end power of the RS. It's actually really easy to do, have done it many times... So if you don't need the higher spec suspension or better dash, go with the R model and unlock it to get the full RS power profile.
@@trevorphillips3055 Of course. haha What's cool about it, is that the dealer can see how many times the ECU has been written to, and what map is in there... but it can't see what changes were made. So unless your dealer is tracking every ECU upload and counting, they wouldn't even know that you made the change. TuneECU lets you go in and make changes to the base map, and all the dealer can see is that the map number matches what is supposed to be in there... So I wouldn't worry about it. My 2022 Speed Twin 1200 was tuned, X-pipe, mufflers, air filter, Ohlins shocks, K-Tech forks, Steering damper, etc... Had a ring land break off and took out a valved and fractured the piston at 120mph... Warranty covered the rebuild with 2 new pistons, cylinders, head and all new valves... Unless your dealer is a knob, you editing your ETV3 table to unrestrict it, won't impact your warranty...
Sounds like you know what you're doing with tune ecu, I have a copy but have never used it. Dealer tool though I have used, I used to home service my street 675r.
@@trevorphillips3055 Dealer Tool is good for resets and diagnostics, but if you want to go in and disable O2 and SAI... If you want to remap all the fuel tables on a dyno, ignition tables, raise the rev limiter, get rid of the top speed limiter, and go in and remap your throttle for each ride mode, you need TuneECU for that. I have lots of tutorials and stuff on my channel. It's actually easier than most people think. On the Street R... you twist the throttle in Sport mode and it delivers 100% throttle, but only until like 8000rpm or so, and then it cuts back to 81% I think. So you can keep the throttle pinned all the way to redline, but the ECU says, "nope, you are only getting 81%"... The RS, gets 100% till redline. That's why the R makes less power. It's capable of the same power, but they wanted to create two different power profiles at two different price points. Its cheaper for them to have one motor, one assembly line, one set of parts and tooling, and just do the rest in software...
I test rode both on Saturday starting with the R, then a yellow RS. I'd had my heart set on a red RS but changed my mind after seeing the yellow and put a deposit down. Excellent review. I ride a 2015 MV Agusta Brutal 800 RR, but seriously considering the Street Triple RS. I've not tested either as of late. But all that I read and TH-cams watched point to more comfortable and tossable Triumph. What's our thought on this?
I'm thinking of buying an RS, but I don't like this mirror on the handlebars. But I think the R panel is very bad, can you tell me if you can put the mirror of the R version in the RS model?
Not shown in video: A now 2-year old Yamaha MT-09 base model shows up and immediately the two Thailand built, Triumph software limited and locked STR’s are immediately put on their side stands and a line forms to ride a reliable, torque monster Japanese built, real deal scalpel.
I think this kind of informative video suit your style much better. Your recent reviews were kind of “safe” let’s call it - almost like reading a sales brochure. I could not feel anything which gave me an indication what the bike is like - unlike 44 teeth after which I was really starting to want to get on this bike. As for the bikes I’d pick an RS at this price difference and for the colours (triumph… finally!!!) - though I do like the R tft screen more. They both do have way too much stickers though. I think in general it’s an improvement in looks department but this “refining” starts to get a bit too long in the tooth and looks like a car after the 5th facelift when usually the first one had already ruined the initial concept.
It's the sum of the components, the Suzuki is heavier, has rubber brake lines, cheaper suspension, brakes and electronics etc. The Street RS is a bike you can buy and take to the track on day 1 and compete with the big boys.
@@tubejorrit I would still buy the Gsxs as I would not do any track days. Th RS is a lovely bike but as a track bike? You are going to get roasted on a track days by sports bikes with no fairing.

Be for you buy the RS take a hard look at the tach display you absolutely can't see it it's way to small on all display settings! It's a deal breaker for me!
Dont need the RS not a track rider and its to expensive but it looks better with the red or yellow colour. The R its good enough but dont like the colours. I pass on the R only maybe buy it if Triumph offer more colour option for the R.
A pirate would buy the R!!!! But, seriously I'd be interested in the R model. A few years ago my Triumph dealership never had the S model, ever. However, they do have some R models now, and I'm seriously thinking about it.
Man I’d love the RS only because of the stunning yellow. I love the grey of the previous models but the new grey is so boring! The white is slightly better but RS colours are way way better.
@@christianburger25 The Yamaha also has rubber brake lines, less rider modes etc, also a seating position made for a road bike, the RS is a weapon on the Street AND track without any modifications. Also the Yamaha has a top speed limiter that prevents the bike going over 220km/h
Good review, so first you say not much difference then go on to point out so many, lol. The price difference isn't enough not to buy the rs. Good work tho.
The silver looks fine in the flesh, so much so that's what I went for. Hopefully I'll get the call soon to say I can collect. I'm happy with what I saved opting for the R. It has allowed me to add the genuine Triumph accessories I wanted plus I'll be able to stick a quality exhaust on straight away too.
Much more premium than the MT-09. MTs are great for the engine and thats about it, everything else on a Triumph will be better quality. (Coming from someone currently riding an MT07)
@@ajk6656 yeah u can put all the blings on a bike and it may not necessarily work. Parts are not everything, and the new MT-09 is the bike to beat right now. The previous Street Triples are below on that list of bikes if you include the duke 890 and The Ducati Monster as well it just didn't compete despite having probably more premium components. I just wonder how these new ones fare.
Yes 100%! The engine in the mt09 is more punchy down low but the triumph engine has a beautiful note and revs higher. It also is more sporty where the mt has a more upright adventure bike riding position. I had a 09 and regret selling my RS. I would choose the Street RS if I could only have one bike the rest of my life.
@@tarnishedsquid2967 what's your point? It's well known and accepted that the MTs use cheaper parts than bikes like the street triple (other than the engine). I'm not saying the MT09 is bad, just that most areas of the bike will feel and look less premium
Not any more. The RS is better at everything. The R used to have more power down down prior to 2020, because it has a different cam and tune and had more midrange at the expense of top end power. Not any more. The R and the RS have the same motor and tune, all that's different is the R has an electronic governor on it to limit top end power. The RS has all the low down and midrange grunt of the R, plus it also has more top end power.
@@robertbieganski8143 Its the same bike with different accessories, but has same position, etc... The Moto2 has a more aggressive seating position, not the regular RS The RS has better suspension, and some other tidbits that work better on track and the road. The dash is subjective.
Love the street triple but both work better on the track than many other machines in this price range that are more road suited. Also both spoilt by a rubbish dash. The R one looks very fisher price and toy like and the TFT on the RS is the same rubbish TFT fitted to last years bike. Back in 2017 both the R and RS had the same much nicer TFT with a proper rev counter. Sadly dropped on both in 2020 🙁
Good job Bob 👍 i think 99% of the future owners will prefer the RS, not for her performances, but just for her gorgeous Red and cosmic yellow, and also for the dash 😊, not for the ER6 dash of the R version 🤔
Ah well this is an easy dilemma to answer. You should buy neither until Triumph understands that a warranty has to be honoured. There are other brands that honour their warranties as they should. Maybe take a look at them first.
Monster doesn't have enough horse power to compete, the MT09 has a great engine but the seating position, suspension, brakes and lack of advanced electronics make it an inferior bike on track. The KTM and Triumph were designed for the track, its hard to choose between those two.
Try doing a knee down on the MT, or better yet put both bikes on a track and see who has more fun. The brakes on the MT are also far inferior compared to the the triumph ones (Yamaha still deliver their bikes with rubber brake lines) or suspension. The engine for the 09 might be better for road riding but Yamaha also puts a speed limiter on the MT09 (max 220km/h) and yes, I owned both bikes....
@tubejorrit it's extremely easy getting a knee down on even the previous gen MT-09. Also the brake lines are irrelevant since any serious rider throws on braided lines anyways. The limiter is also easy to remove with an ecu flash which you need to do if you get an exhaust anways. The MT-09 is cheaper with almost as much power and more torque with a much lower stressed engine, more comfortable, more reliable, it's just a no-brainer which is the better buy. The street triple does look better though I'll give you that.
@@DB-sd3cw ah yes so all the Street RS reviews where they are raving about that it's best in class and whatever are not relevant and the press is payed to make 100% positive reviews. I had an mt-09, it needed new fork cartridges, a new rear shock to make it even bearable to ride and the pegs were dragging in everyone corner because they were too low. If I wanted to do a kneedown I had to lean off the bike like a monkey. It was a great wheelie bike/road bike but for me it was just not as good as the Street on track and fast canyon riding.
Am I the only one who thinks the front lights looks pretty weird?? the gap between the light and the suspension is massive, it looks the didn't spend much time with the design ... Anyway, incredible bikes !!

Excellent review. I ride a 2015 MV Agusta Brutal 800 RR, but seriously considering the Street Triple RS. I've not tested either as of late. But all that I read and TH-cams watched point to more comfortable and tossable Triumph. What's our thought on this?
I'm into horsepower so I'd go with the Speed Triple 1200 RS at almost 180 HP 👍
Is it possible to add a 10mm spacer to the rear shock on the R so that it has the same riding geometry as the RS?
1:58 wait... those lines arent even close to being in the same spot.... The angle looks almost identical if you put the line on the same spot.
Very comprehensive, as always, cheers!
How much of a difference would it make if you add a 10mm space to the R?
That yellow 👌🏻the RS is on my list!
Does a quick shifter mean, i only need the clutch at start?
I'm thinking of buying an RS, but I don't like this mirror on the handlebars. But I think the R panel is very bad, can you tell me if you can put the mirror of the R version in the RS model?
Would the R be comfortable enough for 1-2x per year 400 mile trek?
What do you think about R tires? Are they ok? Or worth of considering is buying....
Got my test coming up shortly. Is this too much of a leap from an MT 125? If I pass that is.
First job on day one, get rid of those horrible orange side reflectors. I would take either bike, thank you very much.
Not shown in video: A now 2-year old Yamaha MT-09 base model shows up and immediately the two Thailand built, Triumph software limited and locked STR’s are immediately put on their side stands and a line forms to ride a reliable, torque monster Japanese built, real deal scalpel.
I'll get a yellow one!
Welp...
I have a 2022 Street Triple RS is it worth trading for the new one🤔?
Moto Bob do you know if the BMW g310rr is coming to the UK in 2023 please reply
Are these the 765 or the 1200 cc?
Will the rs gauge fit the R? I think R is enough power wise
Our dealer is reporting the bikes you were riding will actually come in as 2024 models....any thoughts?
RS all day long over the R, love that red.
the missing RR. In Yellow. I think everyone I talked to would pick the yellow. reminds of the old daytonas.
The Suzuki Gsxs can be bought for £10,500 new in some dealers with 150bhp?
It's the sum of the components, the Suzuki is heavier, has rubber brake lines, cheaper suspension, brakes and electronics etc. The Street RS is a bike you can buy and take to the track on day 1 and compete with the big boys.
@@tubejorrit I would still buy the Gsxs as I would not do any track days. Th RS is a lovely bike but as a track bike? You are going to get roasted on a track days by sports bikes with no fairing.
@@JamesWilson-ve9zi Depends on the track, experienced reviewers like Reeves and the dude from 44teeth both said you can keep up with sport bikes in the corner or even beat them. the straight is a different story but that's not where the fun is. If I ride track its for myself not chasing lap times.
I considered mt 09 but my choice is Street 😊
If you want the features of the RS but the geometry of the R the dealer can remove the spacer.
How difficult can it be to remove a spacer? It needs a dealer?
@@peterhatfield5632 no idea, just going off their press info.
Be for you buy the RS take a hard look at the tach display you absolutely can't see it it's way to small on all display settings! It's a deal breaker for me!
no nice colours on the R, and no low version shame !! good vidio
I Would Say Yellow Is The Best Color Red Is Second Best
What’s are the revs at 100 km/h
Why would I even care about this? 😂
Can't understand the price tag of the RS, when you can buy an xsr900 for less and same tech (plus cruise control)
Apples to oranges, the RS would be a much better track option.
@@metallitrunks1 based on what?
@@DukeontheThames Weight, power, seat height, body position, etc.
Not to mention better breaks and suspension on the RS
@@christianburger25 The Yamaha also has rubber brake lines, less rider modes etc, also a seating position made for a road bike, the RS is a weapon on the Street AND track without any modifications. Also the Yamaha has a top speed limiter that prevents the bike going over 220km/h
Good review, so first you say not much difference then go on to point out so many, lol. The price difference isn't enough not to buy the rs. Good work tho.
This Sucks ! I can not get the R in that flashy Yellow or Red paint job ?
You might think that was done on purpose? 🤔😀
@@trevorphillips3055 Yes. Which means I will be keeping My Red 919 Honda Hornet !
I’m very shallow, I just want the RED! 👍🤪🇨🇦
Would these be a better choice than an MT-09?
These are built in Thailand, while the 09 is built in Japan. Nuff said.
@@tarnishedsquid2967 what's your point? It's well known and accepted that the MTs use cheaper parts than bikes like the street triple (other than the engine). I'm not saying the MT09 is bad, just that most areas of the bike will feel and look less premium
R is the better road bike. RS is a track weapon.
@@SquireSCAI disagree with you..R is best choice for daily riding...position more comfortable, better dash...in RS is chaos...
@@robertbieganski8143 Its the same bike with different accessories, but has same position, etc... The Moto2 has a more aggressive seating position, not the regular RS
The RS has better suspension, and some other tidbits that work better on track and the road. The dash is subjective.
Cheers Bob 👍
Unless I'm going to the track, I'd get the R.
RS ❤
Amazing 👍
All of indians here ... Please tell me you noticed Varun Painter in the background at 6:14 ish😆
Sadly dropped on both in 2020 🙁
Give me the yellow RS!
OOOwh great bikes, the R for me please, I'm a old fart, so better for me . Great review Bob, greatings from good mojo Belgium .
Only thing keeping this old fart looking at the RS is the availability of cruise control from what I understand ONLY only the RS.
Cheers 🎉
That yellow is attention grabbing. Makes me think it's the safest color, wish it was available for both models.
Had no problems with faulty headlights replacement on str
RS all day every day
They mugged off the R with that shitty reservoir like even old gen didn't have this type.
Yellow 💛 bumblebee
Everybody here knows go for the RS. People want to know RS vs MT09, 890 duke R, ducati monster. That is the question.
Monster doesn't have enough horse power to compete, the MT09 has a great engine but the seating position, suspension, brakes and lack of advanced electronics make it an inferior bike on track. The KTM and Triumph were designed for the track, its hard to choose between those two.
An MT-09 blows either of these bikes away in almost every metric except aesthetics.
@tubejorrit well first off if you're buying a track bike and not buying a supersport then you've already made mistake #1.
Ya it's actually shocking how much more punch the MT has down low. Best middle weight naked hands down.
Worst R colors 😂😂😂😂
It’s already looks outdated 😬
The R would be just the ticket for me, just to be boring though, why isn't it available in black!!!!
Am I the only one who thinks the front lights looks pretty weird?? the gap between the light and the suspension is massive, it looks the didn't spend much time with the design ... Anyway, incredible bikes !!
