NO is soooo simple....it's called greed, blind ambition, ignorance. Take the contract, read it, sleep on it, discuss it with proper personnel. Demond is speaking so much knowledge...thanks!
Kudos to brother Demond for reiterating and making his point as clear as that crystal ball he held up. He’s only a few years older than myself so I can definitely say that this is the way many of us think and we were never television stars. So to the young folks who really enjoyed this openness, frankness and directness, go talk to some of your older relatives. Call them and talk to them. You’ll soon find that there is wisdom like this in your own families that you can tap into. Don’t wait and don’t hesitate because we will soon not be here on the planet anymore.
The guy John has good intentions I believe, but he does seem to miss the point at times. I will say he's pretty good about not interrupting Demond while he's trying to make a point. I hate interviewers that constantly talk over the person being interviewed.
I agree with Mr. Demond Wilson. I also felt that Taraji should have gotten her contract and her asking price settled prior to doing a movie. But ultimately she wanted the money.
More like NEEDED it because like Gabrielle Union said, "Most of us celebrities/stars/famous people are like 1 or 2 paychecks away from going under. That's why we're constantly auditioning or booking roles." In most cases, it is because they live above their means, supporting their families, etc. I have no doubt Taraji didn't fight one some of these contracts because she NEEDED that cash because she knew if she said no then they'd just scoop up another black female actor who would say yes.
No, ultimately, she wanted to STAR in the movie. Thirst is palpable in negotiations. She put herself in a position yo be low balled by being so HARD UP! She could have just said NO, and held out for ehat she felt she was Wirth, and Bern willing to WALK AWAY if she didn't get it. She chose to stay bring thirsty, and she hit that she came for. A starring role in a movie. With no money... SMH...
@lanasjoynt485 she could have walked away but like it was already said they would have gotten another black actress and her goal is to work as an actress. If they weren't paying enough as a starring role what do you think she was going to get not starring.
@@OurKindofEntertainmentYou are so on point. Most casting directors keep a list of folks that they can get in case the actor they want is not available or they/their team are being hard to deal with, NEXT. Directors and Producers call the shots and have to work with the budget. If you are a really BIG name, they got what you asking for and everybody else gets what is negotiated. If you got a name then there's others also with a name too that can get that job if you don't work out. Look at how many others could have done the roles that these ladies worked yet are upset about the pay! They have types and there's several types like both of them. Look at the movies Taraji has been in couldn't Sanaa Lathan or Gabrielle Union have done those roles. Obviously there was somebody who filled those roles that Monique turned down after Precious. The train keeps on going if you aren't ready to jump on board and can't negotiate a deal that works. Just don't take the job if you gone be upset later.
I agree with this man. What he said makes all the sense in the world. We can't expect people to take our demands seriously if we keep accepting the bare minimum. They have no reason to pay more when they already know you'll accept less.
Doing the promotion was also for her benefit. She also turned down roles after she won the Oscar contrary to her claim that she was blacklisted. She said that those roles didn't pay enough but she didn't understand that taking those roles would have given her a chance to portray different characters and build her Hollywood resume'. Now her mouth keeps destroying her career and burning bridges with other Hollywood actors.
She did do the promotion run for the film in America. It was not in her contract to go over seas. Refusing to do things that you didn’t sign up for or isn't in your contract isn’t the same thing as demanding better pay by not signing contracts that go against just that.
@@ericmckinney4607 yeah, that ain't on Oprah. They really were trying to put her on the game. Actors who attend the Cannes Film Festival to promote a film that's part of the festival's program may have their travel and accommodations covered, but they don't get paid for their time. That's a small sacrifice to rub shoulders with the next Director/producer or studio exec for your NEXT PROJECT. She dropped the ball and sabotaged her own career.
@@ericmckinney4607what is beneficial about working for free ? If it was for her benefit then they should have paid her. Monique found it more beneficial to stay at home and be with her family so they should have paid her to make it worth her while to be away from her family it's not like Tyler Perry and Oprah didn't have the money, it was clearly for their benefit more so than it was for her because they were the ones begging her. And as someone who was an Oscar winner she had every right to turn down roles if they were low ball offers because after winning the Oscar she was an A-list actor at that point so she should be paid accordingly
Thanks 🙏 for taking another 1 for the Team Johnny. GOD Bless your patience. Mr. Wilson is right. You negotiate the contract 📝 deal see what y'all can work out & find a middle ground. Its not 🚫 mandatory for the actor to agree, no & walking away is a choice that we can all make.

I said the same thing about contracts when I was asked to give my professional advice and you know what, they didn't listen. In my case it was a 360 deal. It was bad ya'll but this young eager man wanting to get "put on" signed it anyway! Back in the days Little Richard and them got played because of well you know but people like rappers going on radio shows calling producer out...for what! YOU SIGNED THE DEAL! Taraji and all the rest of them should have known better! What Mo' did was different. She did her "friend" a favor by taking a lowball (which was high for an indie director) pay with conditions. It was a choice she made. The Mo situation also showed you can win an Oscar without kissing butt!

I’m highly educated, and I’ve signed contracts for work. However, I pay attention to how much I will be paid! If the offer is low, I won’t take it, and that’s what Taraji Henson should have done. Also, you talk about a pay raise in private, not in public. I’m waiting for a producer to pay Taraji over $150,000. She made The Color Purple lose ticket sales. If someone offers her a role, they should also give her a gag order to keep her big mouth shut!
@@ThinkTankUSA-lk8cm ive never signed any contract for working with anyone knowingly. Its at the point I'm not even considering to just go back to work. Same thing at my job. They were offering me less than half of what I am worth. I did not even negotiate, nor did I reply to their offer. These actors should have invested their money wisely so they can have bargaining power.
1:00 Agreed. I'm tired of hearing Black entertainers sign contracts and then play dumb and victim later. After 100yrs in music and Hollywood, Black talent should already know or at least know how to move and protect themselves in this industry by now.
John I respect the way you don't let mister Wilson's demeanor and candor upset you that's I you get these nuggets he's spitting we all have encountered a confident old school individual that gives it to you raw.
Mr. Wilson speaks the truth, this is BUSINESS and you have to treat it as such !! If you agree to a contract and don't like the terms then that is on you for signing it, so don't complain. Now he says you can do that "once you are a name". When getting started, you'll get paid peanuts but the exposure is worth it to build your career up.
bullsh*t! can you or others easily walk away from a job or good paying job because something bad went done, and quickly find another one? no, it will hurt a lot of us financially so we tough it out. And sure we may talk about it to friends and family! Us black folks? do not have a lot of options stand up against the bullsh*t so we ride it out!
Ironically, Judge Judy did her Black bailiff dirty Bailiff Bryd, when she got her new deal and show. Cut him off, like he was a complete stranger, after working with that dude for 20 yrs.
@ytrbro1041 you people always complain . Since you're the world's largest consumers why don't you build something instead of whining and moaning all the time
What you and Monique don't understand is that since Monique was in the movie when she promoted the movie she also promoted herself, but then again she didn't understand how the game is played and still refused to learn. But she's always somewhere in the corner crying.
Exactly, from what I've heard from interviews, she played her part. She did the American promo which was part of her contract and refused the European promo, precisely because she was not contracted to do so. The industry is clearly exploitetative and Monique was black-balled because she refused to be exploited. Yes, she and her husband don't have tact in terms of how they address matters, but that does not in any way deligitimize her claims. Again, it's amazing how most people clearly heard Tyler admit that Monique did not breach her contract and was well within her right to not do work she wasn't contracted for, conveniently turn a blind eye and pretend that she's in the wrong. Showbiz as a whole is clearly exploitetative, more so to black talent and there appears to be an inherent expectation that black entertainers should just be content with fame.
Right On and Thank You Demond Wilson. That is exactly what I said when they were making all that noise. You get what you negotiate. If you sign or let your team agree to something that is not really what you want, that is on YOU! You can't eat the steak at the restaurant and then ask for your money back. Tell them what's wrong with it and let them fix it or send it back and get something else or leave. These folks should have asked for what they wanted and if that was not negotiable, then leave the deal on the table and not fuss about it after you worked it. I understand when you want to do a favor for a friend and work on their project for a small stipend or smaller fee than you are worth. Cool, then you did that and it was a favor you did so why are you upset afterwards. It was a favor and you took the deal. Demond is on point.
Wow, so good to see him and he looks so good! I didn't know he did all of this speaking out until watching him on another video of yours about the overseers - as he preferred to call them.
He is absolutely right. Pay attention to the terms of the contract. If they are not going to pay you what you feel you are worth, don’t do it. Plain and simple.
I said the exact same thing on another channel about Eric Monte crying about not getting paid for creating tv shows in the 70s,some folks told me I was wrong. LOL. I told them he should've had a contract drawn up by an attorney representing his best interests.

@@daradiant1 he didn't paid him his just due. Stop justifying deceitful handlings. Eric Monte had his drug issues, but constructive fraud going on as well
@@wingchundragonLike most things in life, it’s not that black & white. Sometimes, you don’t sign and they just steal the idea. You can sue, but sometimes the WS or ✡️ are on code and you still get done dirty. Sometimes you hire a good lawyer, but they don’t catch everything. I think 50 was having issues with STARZ and I know he had good lawyers going thru those contracts. Which is why he signed a new deal to develop shows for HULU. They’re probably the ones forcing all that 🏳️🌈 sex into Power. They’re even crowbarring some of it into BMF. Probably coming from the top.
@@wingchundragonYes & No. With actors I agree with Demond, unless they the studio tries to switch up. With writers & creators, you can refuse to sell your script or concept. If Norman Lear steals it, Monte can sue, but Lear’s folks are powerful in the courts like Hollywood. It’s just the truth. The sista Sophia Stewart who wrote the concept to The Matrix, got ripped off. Those Wachowski Brothers, who both are trans now (Wachowski Sisters) are part of both of group of folks, running Hollywood. That movie franchise made well into the 9 figures. Demond is coming from the standpoint of an actor/comic, so he’s largely correct there. But Black people who write or develop show concepts, can be pushed out. Especially back then. Look at David “Harry O” Harris, who funded Death Row Records from prison. His lawyer David Kenner got with Suge Knight, they both stabbed Harry O in back and cut him out the company. Kenner helped with the contracts, so he knew how to operate around them. Demond had a better grasp of the business. Too many younger people who have access to the internet, view things today like it was yesteryear. There was far less info and mentors for younger Blacks getting into the game back in the 70s. Demond had a father, some of these dudes didn’t. Even Redd Foxx had studio & IRS issues, but that largely was his fault. Sniffing coke and tricking with women. Many of these Hollyweird folks would rather cancel a successful Black show, than give into the demand. They don’t want to give uppity negr0es more ideas. We saw this with Dave Chappelle and Comedy Central. They had the money, but refused to pay up. Lucky as a standup comic with his level of talent, he could operate around the system easier than an actor. A great comedian can go straight to the market, just like a rapper.
Especially with some of these 'teams' having hefty price tags when you hire them or keep them on retainer. Yeah, let me get my lawyer, agent, etc. on the phone so we can go through this contract together to make sure I'm making the best deal possible because if I don't get paid a good amount then THEY don't get paid either.
I said the exact thing when I saw Taraji P. Henson was complaining about the pay with the Oprah project [after the fact]. You knew what they were gonna pay, then you signed the contract. Where's the problem? If it wasn't up to your standards you simply shouldn't have sign on. Then she went on to claim she needed the money to survey and thrive, so to speak, and that's the only reason she didn't back out. Maybe she should have been investing and trading stocks in the background the whole tenure of her career and saving, so she would never have to take pay that she felt was beneath her standards. J/S

He right on the money . Just say no grown folks.❤
But here's the thing, if you have to keep saying no, when do you get work..the point taraji and Monique were trying to make is they never get offered what they're worth
@@marimarieloveYou’re worth what someone is willing to pay. You can’t determine your worth by yourself. The market decides.
They All read The Contract......From the Beginning to the End......Period. ❤😊❤😊❤
Are did They.........
@marimarielove Both of those actresses have no Leverage to demand the salary they want.
NO is soooo simple....it's called greed, blind ambition, ignorance. Take the contract, read it, sleep on it, discuss it with proper personnel. Demond is speaking so much knowledge...thanks!
I’ve always loved Demond and always will!! One of the realest brothers in the world 💯
Kudos to brother Demond for reiterating and making his point as clear as that crystal ball he held up.
Young John is not educated enough to interview educated people. Educated people will never say" I Seen" they will say "I saw".
WOW!!!
The guy John has good intentions I believe, but he does seem to miss the point at times. I will say he's pretty good about not interrupting Demond while he's trying to make a point. I hate interviewers that constantly talk over the person being interviewed.
"Thank You, That's It, Stop Right There" 😂😅😂😅
I agree with Mr.
That's why we're constantly auditioning or booking roles."
In most cases, it is because they live above their means, supporting their families, etc.
SMH...
I agree😊
Katt Williams - “You have to tell them No”
I said the same thing along time ago, don't sign contracts you don't agree with! No matter what it is in life!
I agree with this man. What he said makes all the sense in the world. We can't expect people to take our demands seriously if we keep accepting the bare minimum. They have no reason to pay more when they already know you'll accept less.

So funny
Mr. Desmond Wilson spoke nothing but the truth.
I hate it when people act like a jerk and stupid people think they are being profound.
In Monique's defense she was ok with her precious contract they tried to make her do things outside her contract with Lee Daniels. That was her issue.
Not really!! According to what is being sad they keep you at that same low right
She did do the promotion run for the film in America.
Well said Mr. Wilson!! 👏 ❤
This is a real man and it feels good to get a lesson from a senior who you respect.
Thanks for all of those good shows on Sanford and Son!!!!!
I love John cause he doesn't have an ego or pride issues he respects his elders and that's how you become respected
I love how he's just saying it as it is! True OG! We need the wisdom of his generation to be instilled in today's generation. These young folks today, they just don't know.

NO, ABSOLUTELY NOT, TLC's Totally Unfortunate past monetary situation isn't going to be dumped squarely on Baby Faces lap; if at all.
That was Pebbles managing self with her, Pebbitone production company, Savvy Records when she was married to LA Reid who was one of the founders of LaFace Records ("La" aka LA Reid) and Babyface which was connected to Arista records Clive Davis.
People, like "Prince," and to many others, have been saying for years there are more things wrong with the industry then right.
People Finally started standing up for writers, because without them there would be a whole lot of nothing. Though appreciated, that was just one step.
I appreciate Demond giving insight to those that are unaware. In my opinion the light cannot be cast on this issue enough until it's fixed.

He’s preaching accountability, and that is lacking today.
Ive never signed any contract and I damn sure ain't in Hollywood.
Monique said they didn’t contract her for promo and she wasn’t coming out her pocket and in turn got labeled difficult.
What you and Monique don't understand is that since Monique was in the movie when she promoted the movie she also promoted herself, but then again she didn't understand how the game is played and still refused to learn.
But she's always somewhere in the corner crying.
So
@@ericmckinney4607say it louder so Monique and her daddy to hear maybe she might learn something

He is right. Negotiate before you sign.

He got paid, but he squandered it all. Norman Lear paid him even if it wasn't what he deserved. He squandered every dime.

He spoke truth... HAVE YOUR TEAM working for you. They sure have their's.
Absolute legend. He is so straight with no bs attached.
Very logical are your words Mr.Wilson.I totally agree.

Brother Wilson is dropping jewels in this interview.
I love it! And Sir Demon Wilson, you are extremely handsome 🙂
