SWOT stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Understanding how to perform a SWOT analysis is critical to your planning process. The purpose of creating one is to formulate a synthesized view of your current state.
We build on our strengths, shore up our weaknesses, invest in our opportunities, and monitor our threats. Strengths and weaknesses provide an internal view of your organization, while opportunities and threats offer an external view.
Utilizing input from your planning team and pulling in data sources will help you develop a SWOT analysis.
    Internal data sources include:
    ● Executives and board members
    ● Employees
    ● Customers
    ● KPIs
    External data sources include:
    ● Megatrends
    ● Industry
    ● Market
    ● Competitors
After collecting your data, synthesize it into 10 to 15 bullet points for each four quadrants of your SWOT. Aim to fit it onto one page. It’s helpful to be able to see a clear and succinct picture of your current state.
Do not confuse weaknesses and opportunities. For example, say one of your bullet points is to improve communication. While it may sound like an opportunity, it should be classified as a weakness. Opportunities are drawn from external perspectives (things we can influence but not control). We control communication. The distinction is important because when you process your SWOT, each quadrant serves its purpose.
Opportunities are growth goals, threats are simply monitored, weaknesses are operational and people goals, and strengths are the source of competitive advantages.
Now that you know how to perform a SWOT analysis put it to use! Excellent planning starts with understanding where you are today.

Really well explained in quick way. Helped me add some perspective to the whole SWOT analysis. Would love to see a real example of a business before and after SWOT analysis. Like, what the initial SWOT was before, and then after conducting a consultation and coming up with the reputable research - what was found post SWOT analysis. We are doing a project in college on this for marketing + management class. Would be great to see a good example of this.

Okay I'm a bit confused. In another video on strategic planning you gave "4 Phases of Planning," 1. Assess (SWOT) , 2. Design. 3. Build, and 4. Manage. Now in this video, you said in the O quadrant, you are looking for competitive advantages, even though SWOT is supposed to be evaluating where you're at in your company. In this video it sounds forward thinking, and it skips right to #2 in the 4 phases of planning, in particular the "design" phase. In the SWOT wouldn't you be looking back on missed opportunities , or ops the company did take advantage of? I guess all I'm saying is that you seem to be incorporating the other planning phases into the assessment phase. So why are you looking at "future" opportunities in the SWOT? Thanks! I'm learning a lot from you.

Awesome video, Erica. Great job! I'll memorize your perspective at 4:36 that "there are always more Ws (weaknesses) than there are Ts (threats)." My family's business shares the exact same weakness as WikiLeaks, a publication made up of almost impossible to source sources (secret informants).

    • @pjjones4234
      @pjjones4234 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

There may always be more weaknesses than threats, however threats can more quickly and strongly derail a business than weaknesses. Unless a weakness is a huge weakness in a very core area of a business, I typically recommend business owners focus on leveraging their strengths vs. trying to fix or improve weaknesses. Do more of what you're good at and stop trying to fix something at which you are fundamentally not good.

Lisa is the owner and manager of a popular salon in Bloemfontein where
she employs five hairstylists. Her aim is to ensure that her salon becomes the
best hair salon in Bloemfontein within the next two years. Recently the salon
has experienced a drop in the number of customers coming. Because of this drop
in clientele, profits also decreased. Lisa knows she has to increase the number
of customers coming to the salon; otherwise she will have to retrench some of
the hairdressers that have not been performing as well as they should have.
Therefore, she decided to advertise a special for the salon for the coming

SWOT analysis is a subset of strategic planning. Strategic planning is an extremely broad term and consists of many tools like PESTLE, BCG matrix etc.
It is for you to decide the tools that are the most useful to you, but some like SWOT are the basics that are applicable to all industries.
