I have 2 of these budget Ryobi 18v trimmers. I bought them on sale about 6 years ago in kits with blowers. Although I have much more powerful, and expensive, 18v and 40v Ryobi trimmers, this is still my go to trimmer for most tasks because it is super light weight and compact. It is the only trimmer my wife will use as she finds my other trimmers too heavy and too powerful. This small budget trimmer gets the job done and might be the perfect fit for many people. Although I always wind my empty spools from bulk string, in appreciation of your video, I used your Amazon link to the replacement spools and bought a set of 6. Great deal and convenient to have extra spools ready to go.
@@Kitearmy Update: Today, I received my Amazon order of replacement spools that I ordered from your link. I was able to compare the replacement spool(s) and line to my original spool with bulk line. My neighbor has one. He has 2 car garage , big tree and large veg garden in tiny backyard and small front yard and this is just right size for him. I had a big spool of 0.65 I gave him from a years old trimmer I had. Probably enough to last a few years. He is happy. Thanks for posting.
I've had this string trimmer for going on 3 years now. Use it after every mow and it's never let me down. Put it through the paces and it's held up with the best of them. I've beat it up and take it thru some rough patches too. Great for someone that has the batteries and wants a plug and play option that just works.
Hey it’s my good old buddy the Ryobi 18V trimmer! This is actually a very good trimmer for small yards with COOL season grass. Can’t emphasize enough. This won’t work on warm season stoloniferous grass.
I bought the 4 pound Ryobi today. This is the "Best" trimmer. Very fast, easy to use, light weight, razor trim for string attached to the string cover and lime green which is one of my favorite colors. You don't break into a sweat and you get the trimming done. Best money I've ever spent for a trimmer 💜🌟❤
Thanks. 62 year old who’s never done yard work before & learning quick. I bought one of these but it’s foreign to me so appreciate your explanation! I am having trouble getting the line to advance 🤷♀️. You explained it well though, so will try again.
Revisiting your video as I’m still having trouble getting it to advance. I only trim a few seconds and it’s not working, string seems to cut down to 2 “ an then stay there. So frustrating!
I have this model weed eater and I am getting a new one Friday because my other one broke and this one is short and then when I get a new one I will use the Ryobi as a backup. This model actually does work great!!!
For the last 18 months I've not let the lawn crew edge or use a weed eater in my back yard. th-cam.com/users/postUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG I didn't like the fact that they just kept cutting the edge of the lawn further and further from the rock lining the flower beds and leaving bare ground. And the grass was trimmed or scalped several feet around trees, etc. It was a constant battle with them so I told them to just mow and no trimming. I have Zoysia grass so it grows pretty slow. Obviously after a while it could use some trimming. I'm in my 80's so I can't do much of it myself. Finally I decided that if I could find a lightweight battery powered trimmer I might be able to do some light trimming. I decided to buy the LST201 20V trimmer. And it works great for my needs. I have back yard with about 150' of flower beds and several trees to be trimmed. I can lightly trim the whole yard with a single charge! The grass I trimmed was only a few inches high but the trimmer was more powerful than I expected.
i bought it two days ago, did my first cut today and really enjoyed it. its simple and easy and works for my lawn size, also love your videos watched it last night and subscribed
Thank you for sharing. I just bought one due to health issues my gas weed wackier is just heavy to use anymore. I love it , very light weight and does a great job. However you are so right with the string running out fast. I searched for a video to replace the string and you explained it so well. Thank you so much again.
to prevent using up a spool of line in one outing all i do is keep the line hooked onto the spool notch when you have proper length before starting, that way each time you start and stop it does not advance the line.
Great review. I live in a small cottage rental with a tiny yard. The owner does have yard service (I noticed they just use weed trimmer in here) but they seem to be letting it go for longer periods. I don't think good for pests. Your video provided everything I needed to know for someone that has never bought a weed trimmer. Straight to the point, no filler, easy instructions, great review. I'm on my 2nd one. We'll worth getting the extra heads and winding your own line. I use .080 twisted line on mine and it gives my gas powered trimmer a run for its money.
Definitely considering this ryobi trimmer or similar and more powerful cordless ryobi trimmer models later this spring for my property, we have close to half an acre front and back. Trying to ditch mixing gas and oil with my current old stihl gas trimmer plus it’s heavy and doesn’t run as well as before. So I’m thinking bout a battery trimmer with a decent powerful electric motor with performance.
Thank you for the link to the less expensive replacement string! I just ordered one of these trimmers and it's crazy to see how the price has jumped in just a year.
We have had one of these for around 6 or 7 years now. We are on our second one. We wore out the first one. It is the go to yard tool for my wife. She doesn’t like any of my bigger more powerful trimmers that have more features. This is a great little trimmer! It’s feather light, a perfect size for my wife, and just flat out works and works well. We have worn out a couple of stringer caps so I keep a couple of spares on hand. I have purchased the replacement string cartridges and I have also purchased the bulk string spool. I am split on which I like more. I have used both. Until I purchased the cordless 21 inch Ryobi lawn mower, my wife would use this string trimmer to cut the lawn instead of the corded electric lawn mower we had. (Since I purchased the cordless lawn mower, I won’t be going Bach to gas or corded electric. Even now, she will grab this trimmer and cut small grass areas instead of using the lawn mower. I like this trimmer too. This trimmer is a perfect example of a trimmer that is right sized, properly shaped, and has just the combination of features. It’s well balanced, the handles are the right size, shape and in the right place. It does just fine with the single speed. This is 👍👍☑️
I purchased one of these trimmers last week. Andrew, the commentator for this You Tube video is correct. The instructions provided are worthless. The print is too small not detailed. I had a problem fitting the upper and lower end pieces together. I could not get these two pieces to go together flush. I asked my neighbor to try and he could not push them flush. I had to loosen the screws in the lower end to have the upper end to fit snug together. Once the two pieces fit snug, I then tighten the loose screws in the lower end. Just finished trimming the grass and I am satisfied with the trimmers operation.
I have this and found that it eats through string if you constantly turn off and on as that is when more string comes out. I just leave it on until it is no longer cutting to spool up more string. I also changed to .080 string as it works better.
I appreciate the review because after becoming disabled I can't pull out my Husqvarna anymore and I'm looking to get something a little more lightweight to assist wherever I can
Got an older used one like that from a garage sale for $10 including an 18v battery and charger. Very light! Great for small, light-duty work. I leave it inside my pickup truck.

I contacted Ryobi via their support online thing, and no one got back to me. Is there a way to disassemble the shaft? Please answer asap as I want to return this I didn't use it just like I said assembled it.
Thx! Was wondering exactly how that spool was supposed to be wound. Yeah, it says clockwise but their diagram in the instructions clearly show the string coming off the spool CCW!! My biggest issue was probably the fact that I was using up some old .095" line that I had. It kind of worked but not without issues.
BE ADVISED- I discovered a weird little idiosyncrasy with this trimmer. As I was using my new trimmer after some time the string stopped feeding out. Awesome video! I'm so glad I found your video because the instruction manual was no help. lol I really like this string trimmer over others I've used. I'm tiny and it's still super lightweight for me.
You are excellent and how you demonstrated each and every part of the video thank you thank you thank you so so much did all the little things and how does it visit work on high weeds if you have tall for 56 in tall weeds and you have rocks on top be used for that just to keep the weeds trim down there is rocks on the weeds and grass still grow been doing this for years so it just needs to be kept trim so it won't grow as high as it is it work one that I know it's not as powerful but the price is excellent
Bought this exact one year ago and it has been crap for me. It is very difficult to release the tabs to replace the heads. And I think something just stuck after I replaced the head with the blades that came with it, now the tabs won't release and the head won't come off, and I have been stuck with those cheap plastic blades for the past 6 months. Now the blades have finally worn off, I am throwing this crap away and buying a new one.
Great video thanks. I've had mine for a few years now and have loved it as it's so light as I have only one arm. However just recently it's been acting up. It'll stop as if it has no line but when I open it, it has plenty. Upon closer inspection it appears like the line is stuck within the spool. So I'll empty it and rewind from scratch but nothing seems to help no matter how many times I respool it. So now it's very anoying as it stops within a few minutes as if it's empty. Not sure why the line gets stuck in between each other within the spool. Is it just time for a replacement? Any ideas anybody?
Thanks for reviewing this and giving tips! 👍👍 I have had one of these for 4-5 years now, I love how light-weight it is (and, REALLY, how HARD do people need to go on a trimmer for their homes sitting on a half-acre or less, lol). The auto-feed quickly becomes unwieldy (like, within 1-2 seasons it started feeding, like, an entire FOOT of string). I finally had enough, and just now replaced the auto-feed spring (...courtesy of a pen my brother gave me lol, maybe i should get a proper replacement spring and the plastic piece...). Anyways, the cap's tabs are wearing out from me manipulating it so much, and having extra loaded spools around would be nice, so thank you for the link 👍👍🤙🤙
Am I the only one who couldn’t get it properly connected? Lol. Like I’m having a very difficult time get it to snap into place. Also having a hard time turning it to edge as well. Did I do something wrong?
You are my hero, Andrew!!!!! I have a small lot 1000 sq ft with my home at 250sq ft little home. So this is perfect for me. I have about 7 sq ft of grass. This is perfect! I will buy it. I will buy anything you sell including pencils lol

So, my Mom's Ryobi String Trimmer shipped with Green String. I just bought replacement string of the same color (.080), guess we're going to find out if it works, hehehe.
Need to re-feed line about every 4 feet. ( Not exaggerating!!) Then half the time the line goes all the way back into spool under the cap. Tried other .065 line and it did not feed at all. Marked difference in Ryobi .065 diameter to other brand of same diameter. Returning it.
The string caps wear out fast on these, but they are only 5 bucks at Depot Also the Ryobi 40v auto feed goes thru alot of string , i left the old tap system
I bought into the Ryobi 18v tool line years ago, so I just use my 4.0 Ah batteries on this trimmer for longer run times. I use the small 1.5 Ah battery for things like my Ryobi radio or flashlight.
It doesn't seem like it's very powerful. Is that because it's got a little battery? Just asking? Cause I don't know anything about these. And I need a new one. Because I have a bigger one and I don't know how to get the bottom off of it to refeed the line through it. And won't go through the hole to the other side. And I don't know how to take the bottom off. Maybe you can help me with that, please somebody. My husband passed away last year and I have no idea what I'm doing. Anybody's help would surely appreciate it.
Good info on the price of the spool,I always buy string in bulk and wind it,so I’m not buying those spools. One more piece of info if I may,I have other trimmers, for heavy trimming and all of them rotate opposite of this trimmer, another words it rotates clockwise, all my other trimmers rotate counterclockwise, what’s the difference? It cuts with the rear of rotation, while the other trimmers cut with the front of the spool due to counter wise rotation.therefore you can’t see what you’re trimming.
how did you put those two pieces together so easily?? I've tried with two of them now, it's nearly impossible! Thanks for the video, it's very helpful. This is the best video.
I think something may be wrong with the unit you bought if they're hard to put together. I've heard a few people complain about that but mine was not hard at all
I just bought mine and had the same problem. It was the cord getting snagged as i pushed the two stem pieces together. If you loosen the first couple screws along the stem you can push the cord in place, and retighten
i bought it 2 weeks ago use one time i am not happy because it’s very hard to use other wires if you buy recommended one it will cost a lot so i am returning to home depot didn’t work for me

Theres some unforseen instatnces that the tools we are holding might malfunction or something went wrong so we never Know. Who else use Softgle Comfort as a protection? Please share your experience. Mine is really great!!
It works very well, for it's intended purpose.
Awesome video! I'm so glad I found your video because the instruction manual was no help. lol I really like this string trimmer over others I've used. I'm tiny and it's still super lightweight for me.
i have the manual basically memorized, & it was no help at all 😆 damn my word retention, but being a visual learner
Really appreciate the review I will definitely be getting one as a have a very small lawn. Great video 👍🏻
Glad it was helpful!
Anyone know which line cutter blade is the replacement for this model, i.e. the actual blade that cuts the line? Mine seems to have disappeared.
So once you have the desired length of string, as long as you don’t stop then the string should last longer?
that's what im wondering will it advance it every time u turn it on even if u dont need to?
Great video thanks. I've had mine for a few years now and have loved it as it's so light as I have only one arm. However just recently it's been acting up. It'll stop as if it has no line but when I open it, it has plenty. Upon closer inspection it appears like the line is stuck within the spool. So I'll empty it and rewind from scratch but nothing seems to help no matter how many times I respool it. So now it's very anoying as it stops within a few minutes as if it's empty. Not sure why the line gets stuck in between each other within the spool. Is it just time for a replacement? Any ideas anybody?
Does this trimmer come with the guard? I bought one and there was no guard in the box?
yep - typical ryobi
Did I do something wrong?
is there one at a similar price that uses less string?
You are my hero, Andrew!!!!! I have a small lot 1000 sq ft with my home at 250sq ft little home. So this is perfect for me. I have about 7 sq ft of grass. This is perfect! I will buy it. I will buy anything you sell including pencils lol
SO glad to help you find the right tools - and just think this will only cost you half a pencil
@@Kitearmy you are amazing, Andrew!! We need to get you more subscribers!!!! Let’s go everyone on TH-cam subscribe to the best influencer on TH-cam!!!! By the way, do you by any chance have TikTok?
Any tips on feeding the line, after about 30.seconds it runs out and i have to open it and re feed it
Don't use the Ryobi line, it breaks extremely easy and it gets caught up a lot
So, my Mom's Ryobi String Trimmer shipped with Green String. I just bought replacement string of the same color (.080), guess we're going to find out if it works, hehehe.
as long as it's .80 it should work
I am buying this today!
How to replace carbon brushes for hybrid 18v ryobi edger
How long do the batteries last mine dies quickly
run time should be about 15-30min
Need to re-feed line about every 4 feet. ( Not exaggerating!!) Then half the time the line goes all the way back into spool under the cap. Tried other .065 line and it did not feed at all. Marked difference in Ryobi .065 diameter to other brand of same diameter. Returning it.
Thank you for this review 😊
My pleasure 😊
The string caps wear out fast on these, but they are only 5 bucks at Depot
Also the Ryobi 40v auto feed goes thru alot of string , i left the old tap system
The EGO can take 15 feet of string per load
I have this. Works good. Battery doesn’t last long though. New string is super cheap on amazing. Like 10 replacements for 12$
I bought into the Ryobi 18v tool line years ago, so I just use my 4.0 Ah batteries on this trimmer for longer run times. I use the small 1.5 Ah battery for things like my Ryobi radio or flashlight.
That's a good strategy
I honestly love the thing and I use it for my side jobs when I landscape LOL
it is handy
It doesn't seem like it's very powerful. Is that because it's got a little battery? Just asking? Cause I don't know anything about these. And I need a new one. Because I have a bigger one and I don't know how to get the bottom off of it to refeed the line through it. And won't go through the hole to the other side. And I don't know how to take the bottom off. Maybe you can help me with that, please somebody. My husband passed away last year and I have no idea what I'm doing. Anybody's help would surely appreciate it.
What you have to do is let it slow down until your hear a click and that's when the line is fed. You don't have to let it stop.
right - its near the stop
Great vid--I couldn't find it again because you have trimmer spelled trimer. Wait, I found it!
Oopps - first one to catch that - thank you
Good info on the price of the spool,I always buy string in bulk and wind it,so I’m not buying those spools. One more piece of info if I may,I have other trimmers, for heavy trimming and all of them rotate opposite of this trimmer, another words it rotates clockwise, all my other trimmers rotate counterclockwise, what’s the difference? It cuts with the rear of rotation, while the other trimmers cut with the front of the spool due to counter wise rotation.therefore you can’t see what you’re trimming.
thanks
how did you put those two pieces together so easily?? I've tried with two of them now, it's nearly impossible! Thanks for the video, it's very helpful. This is the best video.
You're welcome 😊
I think something may be wrong with the unit you bought if they're hard to put together. I've heard a few people complain about that but mine was not hard at all
I just bought mine and had the same problem. It was the cord getting snagged as i pushed the two stem pieces together. If you loosen the first couple screws along the stem you can push the cord in place, and retighten
It did that with a bigger battery same 18 volts but bigger amperage ... figured it says one battery fits all
all 18v fit
Hey have you seen the Green Machine yard tools that HD is now carrying? Just saw it online not in stores yet. Must be the EGO replacement.
I have seen them - did not know that HD was carrying - very cool
Hey boss man, how well does it work as an edger?
pretty good for light stuff
It lacks a guide rail to do the edging.
That 60watt charger will charge that
1.5ah battery in about 1 hour. 2 hours would be the 3ah battery.
cool
I'm new to this. Won't it let too much strong out?
nope just a little at a time
Is there something wrong with mine? It only lasted a little less than an hour
That’s about right. - it’s a very small battery
It's very similar to my Black and Decker. Nice review.
That B&D is so sweet
Is it common to have the trimmer motor give out electrical smoke??
For Ryobi - yes
Thanks for making it simple😃💥💥💥💥👍🏻
No problem 👍
Why does the string keep coming out alot
Great video! video!
Thanks!
i bought it 2 weeks ago use one time i am not happy because it’s very hard to use other wires if you buy recommended one it will cost a lot so i am returning to home depot didn’t work for me
Sorry to hear that
What type uf string u need for this
. 065
...Had this trimmer three years ...it's a wifes trimmer! ...she grabs it and gone! ..Me? ...l love it!

I talk so much trash about Ryobi but since Milwaukee's backpack sprayer gets really bad reviews I'm actually starting to consider the Ryobi one.🤦♂️ Also because it's half the price! Come on Ego! Let's see a 4 gallon backpack sprayer! And a dethatcher!
Check out harts
@@TheCamaro5 Thanks! I just did. Wow! Identical!
I think Hart is rebranded Ryobi!
Andrew, when do we get to see a review of the new 730 CFM 40V Ryobi? Esp. A head to head vs EGO 650?
Working on that now
@@Kitearmy of course you are. I REALLY want to come play with your toys!
@@cguy96 It's like disneyland for lawn obsessed adults. I'm excited about this head to head - what are your predictions?

Where is the link to the line?

Is it worth the money
spend a few bucks more and get an EGO
Run time?

My sound was on mute and I still could hear you!
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How much are you wrapping on that spool ? Lol
