I have my mother's old cedar chest that she didn't take care of over the years so it ended up her basement. She passed away in 1988 but I didn't take it then. My dad passed away 9 years ago so I had to take care of selling the house, so I brought the cedar chest over to my house. I let it air out for a few days in the garage because it had a mildew smell. But it all went away after leaving it open and cleaning it. So I'm going to follow what you did--hopefully not putting too much Poly on :) I will keep you posted.
I have a similar chest I want to redo for my bedroom. Again, Lane but looks cheaper than the older pieces I've watched people do, Thanks for showing the lower end trickery and how to make it beautiful!
Very nice makeover, what some of the other TH-cam people do is add some of the color from what they painted to avoid white streaks, great video from London, UK🤠🤠🤠🥸🥸🥸😎😎😎😎
I have just purchased a used Lane blanket chest with the intention of refinishing it. Since I am a complete novice, I am interested in all the mistakes that inform the whole process, since I am likely to make the same ones. Using shellac to make the paint adhere is one of those things I wasn’t aware of, and using a finishing coat with chalk paint, being careful not to put too much on also. As a senior, my back may not hold out, so this may take longer, but it is inspiring to see the beautiful end result. I will also remove the lock.
Thank you so much for the tip about removing the lock. I had never heard of that before but I have small kids, and I've always wanted a chest like this so the safety info is really important to me!
You did an AMAZING JOB! So many obstacles you had to overcome! You did transformed an ugly piece to something beautiful that belongs to someone s home!
I said “no” when you chose the feet, again “no” when you decided to paint them, but obviously, you gave a great eye for beauty, because this is amazing! ❤️
I have a 1956 Lane Cedar chest that I picked up from California State Surplus. I wanted find out more about it. They did send me replacement locks. Call them for replacement locks. Also I think that with the "drawer look" that simple modern style brass pulls would look very nice against the color you chose.
There was sure a lot going on with that chest prior to the make over: Leaves, french provincial hardware (with a farmhouse style chest) curved skirt, and to top it off that cool pad! When did some style designer think all that was a good look? Much better now.
Love it! I am going to attempt my first ever refinish/refurbish; whatever it’s called…very soon. I have a very beautiful hope chest I got years ago that’s just been beaten up on the outside lol I am hoping to do a farmhouse cream and black hardware design so I’m kinda nervous. It’ll be the main eye candy of my living room lol so I am scared to mess it up. I just want one so bad but I can’t afford one so I thought maybe I can try and save my old one since it’s still a strong beautiful hope chest. Anyways, thank you for the knowledge and inspiration! I loved your end result…perfection! ❤
very nice. i am disappointed to hear that Lane made their cedar chests with less quality wood as i got my daughter a lane cedar chest for her 16th birthday back in 1990. she was also leery about that lock.
Towards the end of the company's life, it definitely turned to cheaper materials to cut costs. Still went under, though, as have most America based furniture companies, unfortunately. But older cedar chests are still made of good materials. I've even come across a few from the 90's that were still made from solid wood.
I have been looking for a good cedar chest makeover for years and you nailed it! Mine is almost exactly like yours. Can you tell me how tall your feet are that you added? I love all of it!
Thank you! I think they are about 4 inches tall. They are linked in the description of this video so you can check to see for sure. Best of luck on yours!
Beautiful! Each of your videos is so informative!! When you use Krud Kutter, how do you handle? Rinse off? Wipe off with wet cloth? etc. Trying to figure out if I need to rinse and how to best do this 🤔
It’s just based off what I feel like doing that day. If i was doing all of this for myself and not sharing videos, I would spray most everything. That’s just my preference. But since I’m sharing, I try to mix it up more often.
What do you suggest for a bigger wood filler? I’m redoing my cedar chest and have been watching your video. My Lane cedar chest had parts glued on so well I need to fix part of the front.
We don't sand between every coat of poly. Only if the poly feels really rough after it dries, it has a really rough texture, then we'll sand it to make it smooth before the next layer.
Well... I didn’t want to deal with taping off the inside of the chest that day. But also, the videos where I brush the paint on tend to do better than when I spray it on. 🙈 Oh, and this paint says it self levels, so I wanted to see how well it worked. If it was for myself, I probably would have sucked it up and taped off so I could spray it.
I do like what have done. The color is nice, however, I would like to have seen some contrast on the piece. Pillows are a nice touch but are not part of the unit. Don't get this wrong you did an amazing job.
You should’ve left the leaves. That would’ve been a unique an interesting touch. I also disapprove of your painting the entire thing. If you were going to paint, then you should at least use two colors. You could’ve painted in the squares or the top could’ve been a different shade. It is too uniformly that mud color. What I think you really should’ve done is kept the top wood. The feet could’ve been stained as well.
I said “no” when you chose the feet, again “no” when you decided to paint them, but obviously, you gave a great eye for beauty, because this is amazing! ❤️

I really like the remake!! It’s hard to believe it’s same chest

The turned legs, painted, was definitely the right choice. Love the result. I love that “mucky” color for interior design.
Wow!! I love it! And I love the fact that you weren't shy to show your mistakes!
Don't know why I missed this earlier...what an improvement!!
Like the color and the streamlined look after decorative vines removed
You seriously just solved my furniture leg problem on my lane chest makeover. thank you!!!! And I LOVE the paint color!!!
Yay! Thank you!
So beautiful. I have my mother's Lane Cedar Chest... thank you for the info on removing the lock.
You did an AMAZING JOB! So many obstacles you had to overcome! You did transformed an ugly piece to something beautiful that belongs to someone s home!
Knocked it out of the ballpark. It's a beautiful transformation. I like the look without the knobs, also.
Thank you!!
I agree…..that is really a nice color!!
Love your grit!
Nice color and like the changes you made eliminating some of the dated 'stuff'.
Beautiful. I admire all the attention to detail you took to put the piece together. Love the color too.
Thank you so much!
Turned out so pretty, I have 2 that need to be refinish , so you're video gave me some good ideas
Beautiful ❤
Love the makeover, don't love the paint color at all. I'm getting ready to paint my mother's cedar chest. Thanks for the help.
Love it!
There is perfection in imperfections. It looks amazing!
Thank you so much!
I said “no” when you chose the feet, again “no” when you decided to paint them, but obviously, you gave a great eye for beauty, because this is amazing! ❤️

I like the chunky legs. It is a fast improvement.
Love it! Such a stunning before and after. Also thanks for the encouragement on lightening up on our ocd tendencies. I really needed to hear that.

Amazing difference. And love love the colour. Good job.
Thank you!
I think is beautiful!
Beautiful job!
Awesome makeover.
Nice job. Well done
A beautiful flower type transfer would add so much more interest & beauty. Just my opinion. Nice work.
I love the idea of adding a transfer! I'll definitely keep that in mind for my next project!
Wow. I love it. It turns beautiful. Great choice
Thank you!

What an amazing transformation! Beautiful job as always❤️
Thank you so much Sue!

If the paint was self-leveling, why were there brush strokes after the first coat? Learning here!
I love this!!
Thank you Mary!
I love it
I'm SO glad you love it!!

I personally use a wet rag to scrub. And I try to always rinse with a clean rag afterwards. Especially if it’s really dirty.
@@ARayofSunlight thank you!!!
Whoa!!! MDF & veneer???!! 😱 Good lord!!! How heavy was the piece??!
Hi .. can you tell me what the leg hardware is called & where I can purchase?? Thank you ☺️
Hey Dee, they are linked in the video description. I got mine from Amazon and they are called tee nuts or some thing like that.
This is super beautiful! How do you decide when to brush paint vs when to use the paint sprayer?
It’s just based off what I feel like doing that day. If i was doing all of this for myself and not sharing videos, I would spray most everything. That’s just my preference. But since I’m sharing, I try to mix it up more often.
What do you suggest for a bigger wood filler? I’m redoing my cedar chest and have been watching your video. My Lane cedar chest had parts glued on so well I need to fix part of the front.
Bondo is the best for that.
Do you sand with 400 grit after every layer of poly?
We don't sand between every coat of poly. Only if the poly feels really rough after it dries, it has a really rough texture, then we'll sand it to make it smooth before the next layer.
Why did you brush in instead of spray?
Well... I didn’t want to deal with taping off the inside of the chest that day.
But also, the videos where I brush the paint on tend to do better than when I spray it on. 🙈
Oh, and this paint says it self levels, so I wanted to see how well it worked.
If it was for myself, I probably would have sucked it up and taped off so I could spray it.
Somebody put a Lane marking in there?
I do like what have done. The color is nice, however, I would like to have seen some contrast on the piece. Pillows are a nice touch but are not part of the unit. Don't get this wrong you did an amazing job.
It’s a Lane Cedar Chest of course it has good bones
regarding the "bad lock"....If you go to the Lane website, they will send you a replacement lock for free . :-)
Definitely!
some OCD is good, but just remember its an old used chest and that is what you need to keep in mind
The big "Made in China" sticker on the bottom shoulda been the first red flag.
and it's made in china...
Lane chests were made in America as far as I am aware, up until 2001 when the company closed its doors. MDF stuff is made over here, too.
Check your serial number. It’ll tell you when it was manufactured. I think you got too many numbers on the bottom.
I said “no” when you chose the feet, again “no” when you decided to paint them, but obviously, you gave a great eye for beauty, because this is amazing! ❤️
Beautiful!
