When I was in college at University of North Texas in 1993, this song was literally a phenomenon. On the radio every hour, blasting out of every car and dorm room window, brought together the art punks and the frat boys and the music geeks to drink beer and jubilate.
The Breeders have other good songs, but before doing another one, I would do a songs from Pixies, the band that the Breeders frontwoman Kim Deal was in before The Breeders. A possible choice from them is "Monkey Gone to Heaven". Other '90s rockers by women include "Seether" by Veruca Salt, "Connection" by Elastica, and several songs by PJ Harvey: "Sheela-Na-Gig", "Rid of Me", "50 Ft. "Bull in the Heather" by Sonic Youth. It's one of the best Kim Gordon-led songs in their discography, and she's too much of an indie icon to be ignored. I would suggest PJ Harvey. As a young woman in the 90's she was a role model for me; an independent, strong, talented and versatile female artist in the rock/alternative genre. She's amazing. For ex 'A Perfect Day Elise', 'The Whores Hustle The Hustlers Whore', 'Is This Love', 'Dress'. Other good female bands are Hole, L7, Babes in Toyland
Belly, Letters to Cleo, Throwing Muses, Veruca Salt, L7, Tracy Bonham, Sonic Youth, Sugarcubes, the Donnas are all female fronted bands from this era (late 80s, early 90s) that have the same sensibilities as the Breeders.
One of my favourite things about this song is that it doesn't really strike me as something that was entirely thought through in terms of what the structure would be. like they had the lyrics for the verses, had the pieces of the guitar parts and knew the basic idea of the chorus, and that's it. It's as if someone was just nodding or silently counting down to the other members as to say "okay, get ready to change to the chorus in '3-2-1-now' or "okay, i'm about to sing a verse then play that clean lead in 3-2-1-now".
This was the best rock song of the year it was released! I used to dance my a** off when this came on! As soon as you heard the 'awooah's at the start the dance floor filled up, that bass line would get you revved up, and then That Chorus!! Bodies were bouncing all over the place! Hahaha!! THANK YOU for this reaction! Other 90's female rockers (there were Many!!) include Elastica, Hole, L7, Veruca Salt, and Luscious Jackson!!
The official video is worth catching. Watching the twins perform is always a treat. Throwing Muses are another great female led group from this time. They had some member overlap with the Breeders.
This song always has been and always will be a total banger. Love that you both loved it as well. From the first time I hear it back in the 90’s it instantly became one of my favorite tunes of the day. And you’re spot on with you White Stripes/Slightly sloppy vibe. Great reaction.
Great example of instruments dropping out to let another shine. The bass shines as the guitar and drums drop out. Then the guitar and bass drop out for a quick drum shining moment... then the bass and drums drop out for the guitar to shine.
Kim Deal said in a 1993 interview, that she was talking to her sister Kelley Deal who was reading a biography of the Marquis de Sade at the time, and Kim was making fun of him, saying "Oh, you little libertine, you're a real cuckoo, do you want to go to hell? C'mon let's go to hell.. Don't just jump in... do a cannonball. And you know what? I'm gonna be right behind you, I'll be the last f**king splash." A few interesting facts: The demo title was Grunggae (Grunge/Reggae), because Kim thought that the accented riff sounded reggae, hence the lyric, "I'll be your 'whatever you want', The bong in this reggae song." She also made Jim Macpherson do 10 minutes of takes of rim taps until she heard one she liked. After the rim taps the first two bass riffs by Josephine Wiggs were mistakes (she played them flat) when they were first performing the song for Mark Freegard (the sound engineer for 4AD), and they liked how it sounded so they kept it.
One of my fave HS songs from WAY back in the day! Would jam out to this in grade 12 almost everyday driving to school! Guitar vamp in the break is the BEST! Breeders were awesome!
It's funny you think mid 90s is way back in the day. I graduated in 86' and I don't consider that "way back in the day". Niether do any other normal people.
The mark of any great song is it puts you in your feels. This one does it in spades. It does leave you wanting a bit more on the vocals because she sounds so cool. The bass is just incredible.
I played this like a 100,000 times in the early 90s. And haven't heard it since then. I almost got teary-eyed hearing it again, as it brought back great memories. F××king banger.
Love the unusual combination of “purring kitten” vocals with the chucka chucka raw guitars and thumping bass lines. Somehow both raw and polished at the same time - phenomenal!
That's Kim Deal the original bass player for the Pixies along with her twin sister Kelley Deal. Kim Deal didn't get a lot of her songs on the Pixies albums as Frank Black was the primary writer, so the Breeders were her outlet as a side project. "Divine Hammer" is another decent track from that album. You can hear her vocals on several Pixies songs, usually in a complementary fashion to Frank's lead vocal. "Here Comes Your Man" is a primary example to check out.
Glad you made it to this gem! The Breeders are from my hometown of Dayton OH . The sisters once came in to my art store!! I talked to Kim at checkout . Album cover mockup was their idea . So cool . Ps: The official video that goes with this song is incredible too .

Early 90s had some spectacular girl and girl led groups, the Breeders being just one. Another one to taste is Throwing Muses. Their song “Not Too Soon” is just a growling banger of pop candy - it has more hooks than a tackle box. And their catalog is spectacular.
I'm hearing a lot of Pixies influences in this, too (no surprise, considering Kim Deal's involvement). Both have a kind of punk undertone using drum drop-outs, feedback, dissonance, etc.

For ex 'A Perfect Day Elise', 'The Whores Hustle The Hustlers Whore', 'Is This Love', 'Dress'.
Other good female bands are Hole, L7, Babes in Toyland
Yes, yes, yes to PJ Harvey!
Saturday morning in Australia, what a song to wake up to. Cheers.
THEY'VE NEVER DONE SINEAD!
@@loosilu I suggested her the weekend she died, and a few other people did, but not that big a response. Some people strongly dislike her, smh.
@@loosilu Probably already heard most of her stuff.
@@USGrant-rr2by I actually sent messsages to them, they were not respondent
@@scottboswell6406 what the actual fuck. Elderly religious people in Ireland literally fell all over themselves to praise her
Veruca Salt, The Seether.
My first thought as well.
Kim Deal is a legend of the underground rock scene
1992's "Kid's Allright" by Bettie Serveert rocks with some good "slop" and fits the bill with Carol Van Dijk on lead.
"Divine Hammer" is my second favorite Breeders song if you do end up wanting to check out another one from them.
My actual favorite part of this song is the groove banged out on the cymbal stand that starts it off. It's a perfect music moment.
The vibe you are feeling here is peak Gen X. "The bong in this reggae song."
Gen X music is so damn underrated.
another female artist you need for sure is Bonnie Raitt - "Love me Like a Man". She plays blues guitar as well as anyone. She has a ton of hit songs
Gotta go with "Something To Talk About".
The mark of any great song is it puts you in your feels. This one does it in spades. It does leave you wanting a bit more on the vocals because she sounds so cool. The bass is just incredible.
Down by the Water by P.J. Harvey
G-d by Tori Amos
Doll Parts by Hole
I played this like a 100,000 times in the early 90s. And haven't heard it since then. I almost got teary-eyed hearing it again, as it brought back great memories. F××king banger.
This whole album is 🔥
Love the unusual combination of “purring kitten” vocals with the chucka chucka raw guitars and thumping bass lines. Somehow both raw and polished at the same time - phenomenal!
L7 - "Wargasm" 90's punk from the all female band L7
Yeah, that's a great song. Also 'The Bomb'.
First one that comes to mind is Seether by Veruca Salt, and for Breeders I would go with Divine Hammer
Glad you made it to this gem! The Breeders are from my hometown of Dayton OH . The sisters once came in to my art store!! I talked to Kim at checkout . Album cover mockup was their idea . So cool . Ps: The official video that goes with this song is incredible too .

@@allisonreed7682 Hi Allison!
As a 90ies metal girl growing up with sepultura, Panera, RATM,… This female rock empowerment song was outstanding and one of the few female rock bands that made me feeling great being a girl trying to be taking seriously and respected in a male rock/metal world
I friggin' love this song.
The best way to listen to this song is the way many of us did back in '93: on a stereo cranked up so loud, the speakers are distorting.
Yes! This comment brought back instant memories of this tune in my car, speakers fuzzing out. Thanks for that. ❤
If you haven't hit Elastica yet, you should! Also fronted by three women with a guy on drums. I played the f*k out of their self titled debut album. "Connection" was the biggest song. "Stutter" and "Line Up" are other great tracks 👍
The Breeders - Hellbound
Magnapop - Texas
Magnapop - Slowly, Slowly
Veruca Salt - Seether
Veruca Salt - Volcano Girls
Elastica - Stutter
Elastica - Connection
Garbage - Only Happy When It Rains
Luscious Jackson - Deep Shag
Luscious Jackson - Citysong
Liz Phair - Jealousy
Liz Phair - Supernova
PJ Harvey - Man-Size
PJ Harvey - Down By The Water
For starters...
Sonic Youth - Bull in the Heather
I grew up in the 80s and went to college in the 90s. We had some cool-ass music.
Please please please do Pixies next. Reacting to the Breeders before Pixies is blasphemy. Edit: I didn't realize it was a vote for a female group. Good Pick.
I mean, she was IN the Pixies.
@@loosilu She was in Pixies BEFORE the Breeders. Generally when you delve into artists you don't start at the end. And I know it's petty to bring up but it bugs the heck out of me. They are Pixies not THE Pixies.
I meant, the Pixies were *sort of* female fronted. @@alaskaguyd963
Linda Rondstat ... Blue Bayou, You're No Good, When Will I Be Loved, Just One Look, Don't Know Much, It's So Easy, Poor Poor Pitiful Me...the list goes on. Powerful beautiful voice!

No Doubt-Snakes/Excuse Me Mr.
Sonic Youth-'Cross the Breeze
Portishead-Sour Times/Glory Box

Saw them at Lollapalooza '94. They were one of the afternoon acts on the main stage. Sounded excellent!
Sleater-Kinney
Saw these guys on Lollapalooza 1994 in the heat of Miami. They were with Smashing Pumpkins, Beastie Boys, George Clinton and Tribe Called Quest. What a great show
HOLE! I mean, you got to do Hole after the Breeders. Nothing else makes sense
You guys really missed out not being in High School and College during this time period. You would had so much fun blasting this from cassette deck in your car.
And your Mom loves A Walk To Remember? Damn am I old.

Who can name another Breeders song? No peeking...
I Writed songs, none of them are never be a hit. That's what life is made of...😅😅
Love the entire Last Splash album. Their other albums are harder to come by. I could not even get other albums at their concert.
Last Splash is the only other one I know.
Drivin’ on 9, Metal Man, Doe, Metagoth. I could go on for days…

Early 90s had some spectacular girl and girl led groups, the Breeders being just one. Another one to taste is Throwing Muses. Their song “Not Too Soon” is just a growling banger of pop candy - it has more hooks than a tackle box. And their catalog is spectacular.
Tanya Donnelly from Throwing Muses was in the Breeders, then left to start Belly.
Tanya was everywhere back then.
Liz Phair - 6'1"
Man would I love to see an entire Exile in Guyville reaction
@@Jesstron10 You and me both.
I second that recommendation!
I'm hearing a lot of Pixies influences in this, too (no surprise, considering Kim Deal's involvement). Both have a kind of punk undertone using drum drop-outs, feedback, dissonance, etc.
So glad you liked this. One of the few 90s rock albums I'll still throw on. Her voice is so 🤤
I discovered you two a few years ago and have just thoroughly enjoyed listening to you guys discover the songs that have been the soundtrack to my life. Great commentary and as someone old enough to be your Mom let me just say, you two are absolutely adorable! Always a great time - thanks guys!
Bands to try next:
Belly - Gepetto, Feed The Tree, Slow Dog
Elastica - Connection
No Doubt - Just A Girl
Hole - Celebrity Skin
Yes!!!! Thanks for doing this one. Next, female band - 4 Non Blondes, "What's Up?" -1993.
Love this album. Bought it back when Canonball was on heavy rotation on MTV. Great songs all over it.
Andy & Alex: the best music reaction channel on TH-cam... period!
Thanks, Andy! Thanks, Alex! 💎 I haven't even thought of this one in 15 years... still so good. #AndyAndAlex #TheBreeders #Cannonball
This was played on MTV all the time when I was in high school. Really good stuff, so stoked you finally got to it.

Babes in Toyland, Hole, Concrete Blonde, Elastica, and Garbage.
