Damn now that's an idea. I actually use play sand (sifted) for a good amount of base terrain due to how cheap and plentiful it is, but I never thought about coloring it for ballast purposes. Pretty good idea!

Never tried the play sand. But it should work fine, just a matter of sifting to the right size.
Did you have any issues with color fading when you glued the ballast down? Love this idea and I’m going with yours!
