  • In this episode we are doing some Truckee River fly fishing in search of a 20 inch trout! We were born and raised in Reno, NV so the Truckee River has a special place in our hearts when it comes to fly fishing for trout. If you've ever fished the Truckee, you know it can be a difficult piece of water, but it holds some nice fish for those that are persistent. Catching a 20 inch trout on the Truckee was not an easy task, but after several weeks of trying we finally accomplished our goal, while catching some really great fish along the way!

    Literally the most enjoyable fishing video I've watched in ages. Thanks for taking us with you. I live in the Sacramento area. That's a makeable trip. So far I've only fished the LT. Some good fish there.

    I know there are Rainbows in this river,... but never seen one...just large Browns…! 👍😎👌

    Gonna be stopping to fly fish the Truckee this July on our way up to fish the Smith in NW Cali. Can't wait to hit the Truckee.

    If I were looking to catch a 20+ I'd fish the slow water below Boca below the RV park. It will be hard to keep from spooking but there are lunkers in that stretch of water.

    • @ReelsandRidges

      That does seem to be a pretty good stretch of water and it’s always fun when you have to be a little stealth!

      @@ReelsandRidges my fishing buddy has is figured out but I still swap end pretty often. Watch out for heat expansion when not in the water (especially in the floor section) on sunny days. We made two rod caddies out of 1 1/2” pvc pipe attached to the outside frame with zip ties; notch the pvc so the reel fits in but secure the rod and reel with a bungee cord before bouncing down a bumpy road (does it sound like the voice of experience? We lost a fishing rig once). Tight lines and straight 🚣‍♀️.

    • @ReelsandRidges
      @ReelsandRidges  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good call on the heat expansion, we have also noticed we have to be careful with too much elevation change if we inflate at the house. Tight lines!

    • @ronblackburn3683
      @ronblackburn3683 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ReelsandRidges thanks for the update! We start at 5,200’ at the house and drop down to 3,400’ before putting in at the River. We will make adjustments when we switch locations (start at a lower elevation and go higher)

      Congrats, that’s awesome! Pulling any fish out of the Truckee feels like a pretty big win sometimes so when you get a big one like that it is pretty special!

    Was it pretty skinny? Just cuz idk every 20 inch fish I've caught has been a two handed fish, impossible to hold with a single hand

      @ReelsandRidges  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is probably why I ended up dropping it 😂 you are right though, he was fairly skinny for his size.

      We don’t really know any spots super close to Truckee but there is good access from the Boca inlet down to Farad. We’ve had success in that area and it is still pretty close to Truckee. Hope that helps!

      @@ReelsandRidges thank you for the tips. Can a spinning rod with some spoons work? Or does it have to be fly

    • @ReelsandRidges

      A spinning rod with spoons could definitely work. Our go-to lures with spinning rods on the Truckee are usually super-dupers or rooster tails
