I did 8 years in prison. when I got out, this song was playing at the grayhound in corpus Christi. I was on my way back to Houston. my home. I was locked up for drugs. been clean 16 years now. never forget that day, I was free, clean and on my way back home.
My mom was fighting cancer but she didnt tell us she was dying. One night as I left the hpspital, I rode home crying because I couldn't stand watching her suffer. I begged God to end her suffering, even if it meant she wouldn't be here anymore. This song was playing, as it had in my home as a child, and I couldnt stop crying because part of me knew this was the end for my mom. I still go back to that moment when I hear it. He answered my prayer the next day. She went into a coma and slipped away. Idk why im sharing this.
God bless you trix. I'm sorry for your loss. I found my dad dead in the floor when I was 12. I woke up March 2nd 2002, it was a Saturday, I went into the living room and found my father laying in the living room floor dead. I'll always remember that day and the things that happened. I've never had any kind of psychological help, or any kind of counseling. It eats me at times. But I try to make it through. Idk why I'm saying any of this either, it helps to talk about it I guess. Anyways God bless you.
Sorry for the loss of your mom and the pain it caused. I Lost my mother to cancer 11 yrs ago, I played this song this morning and cried thinking of her because it was a favorite of hers. This song played many times in my home also.
This is real country music. This comes from a country girl with generations of country running in her blood and sung to her every night before bed. This is the music that makes me happy. I don't understand why people take time out of their lives to give this masterpiece a dislike! Who takes the time out of their day to give hate?!?!
My dad could do this song so well at Karaoke. I listen to this every time I think of him, and so now, its on my dialy playlist. Love you and miss you dad ❤
"Amarillo by Morning" is a country music song written by Terry Stafford and Paul Fraser, and recorded by Stafford in 1973. Several cover versions have since been made, including a major 1983 hit for George Strait. Members of the Western Writers of America chose it as one of the Top 100 Western songs of all time.
What a beautiful song. God bless you and your family I lost my adopted parents one year ago. I am not sure why things happen that way. I keep praying to God and angels everyday of my life
I lived in California all my life when I got married I had 2 girls and moved to amarillo that's where my boy was born I love Amarillo where my kids where raised and now I live in florida.this songs makes me so nostalgic.
One of the best songs ever in any genre of music....and what a hook.,..it stays with you. I also passed through Amarillo a few times when trucking....I want to go and look around when I have more time...
My husband and his mother sang this song on the greyhound bus when they were going to Troutdale, Oregon. The bus actually went to Amarillo from San Antonio, Texas.
I've never really been much of a country fan...but this song is and always will be near and dear to my heart. ♡♡ My grandfather loved this song...he always played it and sang it....we lost him to cancer back in July and this song was played at his funeral. Rest in peace Grandpa Joe, I love you and miss you every day. I know you're still listening to this song with me :)
i started listening to country music when I was somewhere 17 and in African it's rare to find someone of my age listening to country I get a lot of questions but why of all songs can't lie i find peace and learn a lot in most of it every time before I go to bed I make a playlist and it takes me in deep sleep
This song reminds me of my Grandaddy and traveling from Oklahoma to Colorado Springs.. Whenever we passed thru Amarillo we always cranked up this song full blast, opened the windows and sang at the top of our lungs.. I miss him and my sweet little Granny and our many travels.. Now they are traveling with Jesus.. Great times.. Sure do miss them..
I'm getting older now, so I've been looking for a good place to retire to. I seem to have zeroed in on Amarillo. Can't wait to get there. But even if I never get there, at least I've developed an appreciation for great country music.
Ever since I spent 6 months in texas for the air force I just cant stop listening to country, I remember this song came on the day I graduated Basic training when I got to drive around san antonio with my family I hadnt seen in months. This song hits home for me.
AIR FORCE! YOUR A GOOD MAN! THANK YOU FOR SERVING OUR COUNTRY!!! I have 2 children that were in the Air Force and both Veterans. Be proud of yourself. Hope you made it a career! Can't go wrong!
I never been to Texas so on our trip to Missouri from Az to see my son graduate from the Army.. Amarillo by morning is my favorite song ever since I was a little boy so when we got to Amarillo by morning I had to play this song.. being with my kids and wife it is something I will never forget... KING GEORGE
ive not lived in texas for over 5 years and its been that long since ive had me a triple whataburger with jalapenos and cheese i use to eat there every friday i would always eat at the one in Bedford next to the on ramp to the 121 good memories.
Being born and raised in Texas, we have special super powers. 1. know the words to every George Strait song 2. can smell bbq from over 50 miles away 3. can withstand over 100 degree heat
I'm from VA, born, raised, and still call home, I have all of those special super powers as well! We can agree to disagree on what constitutes BBQ pork or beef, but #1 and #3 we can agree on 100%.
I was born in Corpus Christi, and am a son of the Great State of Texas. I miss those days living there, and in Waco. I'm a Zony and computer geek now, but I worked on a ranch and ride when I'm lucky. I still have that starry expanse of sky to sit under, AZ is so beatiful, and look up to. The Southwest is so amazing. I do so much like Amarillo by Morning. It takes me to another place somehow.
I am not from that country_ Texas. I heard this from the radio , a long time ago but when I heard this again from Enkh Erdene, my memory came back. I love the lyrics and the melody. Beautiful! Thank you George Strait!.
My dad loved this song. A long time ago we were passing through Texas and stopped off at a truck stop in Amarillo, where they had some meat loaf he really liked, and some of those old table-top jukeboxes that had this very song on them. So every time he heard it after that, he'd remember that truck stop and his favorite meat loaf! :D
EMarie61 Me and my father used to hail scraps like soda cans or metal junk to Amarillo and on the way we stopped by a restraunt and get Biscuits and Gravy. Good times
This song was my late brothers favorite song..I often play it and think of the good times we all had together I miss you bro but I know you are safe in heaven with mom ❤
The first true country song of my life in the early 80's. I danced miles around the floor of the Country Side outside the back gate to Camp Pendelton when I was a young Marine. Meet one of my first true loves there, Debbie, Sorry we lost touch. D4RODEO was her personal CA, license plate. Such good times. Scott
A true classic!! One of my favorite GS Songs but then again, they are all my favorite! Country music legend! I was blessed to be able to take my love and my mom to the concert in Denver this year! Priceless memories
I went to college in Austin, TX in the late 70’s/early 80’s. There was a dance hall in what was then far NW Austin called The Silver Spur or the Golden Saddle--I’m almost 60 now and can’t remember the name, but it was a precious metal combined with some ranching implement. Anyway , on Tuesday or Thursday nights you could get in free with your student ID and buy a massive pitcher of beer for just $2.00. It was a sprawling place back then, filled with handsome , wealthy young, frat boys in their starched Polo button downs, Levi’s and boots. They wreaked of Lavoris, Ralph Lauren products and beer. It was glorious. “Amarillo by Morning” was the one song I remember played. I’m not a country music fan, but that song was on the soundtrack of my life at age 19. By the way, in Texas circa 1979: you could buy alcohol at age 18. My roommate and I would go there as often as we could and dance the night away. I remember those golden years and this song takes me back to a wonderful time in my life when I was young and cute and thin. Sigh....I used to have a fantastic metabolism. It was like a blast furnace when I was younger. I could take a One A Day vitamin with iron..... and fart nails two hours later. Youth. It’s so wasted on the young.
When me and my family were moving up from Texas to Wyoming (Driving), I kept restarting this song every time it ended, or listened closely whenever it came on, I ironic thing was is that we actually reached Amarillo by sunrise...
Used to be a gangster travelling the West coast and one night I heard this song while passing thru Vegas.. I listened to my soul and thought about what a great cowboy I could have been. I decided to move back to the islands to make a change. We love you here in Samoa George Strait
This song has the vibe of a simpler era gone by. Naivete, nostalgia, heartache, passion... The simplicity of a band and an amazing vocalist is so powerful in conveying emotions. No fluff, no drum machines, no hype. Just close your eyes and let George Strait take you on a journey.
Amarillo by morning. Up from San Antone. Everything that I got, is just what I've got on. When that sun is high in that Texas sky, I'll be buckin' at the county fair. Amarillo by mornin' Amarillo, I'll be there. Awe hell yeah!!! Can't beat this country music.
watching a TH-camr singing this song got me hooked listen to this song and true Country oldies, the song 's lyric just stirred up emotions inside, reflecting how i live my simple life.
Here we are in our homestate going cross country from CA TO NJ. I enjoy riding in the semi with my honey listening to songs about the places we travel to and through like small towns and big cities. God is great. God bless George.
renragged ...so did my mother...I was maybe 4 or five when this was popular...as a kid I could stand anything she played...and now at the age of 38 I love her music...it was real music
Puts me in a squarebody truck when I was in my late teens, on a cold night, all the corn is down snow flurries, and its pitch black dark outside.........its one of my happy places
George did not write this song but did grow up around San Antonio. The drive from San Antonio to Amarillo would take you around 8 hours. The song has an honest narrative of what one might generally experience on the rodeo circuit in cities about Texas and the travel between them. Another good country song alluding to outskirts of San Antonio is Steve Earl's Guitar Town, which comments on the speed trap just north of there on the highway up to Austin. This would be the same circuit one would travel from San Antonio to Amarillo.
San Antonio, gosh I miss you!! For 12 years you were my dearest friend. I found myself in that place. 32 now. But still the Best city in the USA in me eyes!!
Delta Zulue my bae died before his 16th. I live because of him. A psychic told me once she saw a young man near me. ...he was bucking it to county fair in the sky. He was looking for eight when they pulled that gate. Amarillo's where he'll be.
I actually tear up when I hear "and friends are friends forever if the Lord is Lord of them.. And a Friend will not say Never . ".... But ultimately ...
Five people you love w/o being "much of a country fan": George Strait, Keith Whitley, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Allison Krause. Also anything duoed or covered by Dolly Parton. Every truly musical soul loves "Jolene" it's made Miley Cyrus look like a philosopher.
lanna lane I ain't got a dime, but what I got is mine. Wow, does that resonate! That song sure takes me to a better place and time than the one portrayed on the evening news. Amarillo is where I'll be
takes me back to riding in the car with my grandma while this cassette tape played. along with so many other great 80's and 90's country. this is music with so much feels.
My babyboy now 18 moving to tx God am I going to miss the hell out of him 1st one of my 4 to graduate n he says he's going to be loving there. GOD IM GLAD HE HAD A GOOD LIFE W ME I HOPE. SO I DEDICATE THIS TO MY ALEXANDER.U GO YOUNG MAN.
I have been there , where everything that I had was what I had on ! Thank Almighty GOD That's not me now ! I have my own home now and it's paid for ! Why because Almighty GOD Loves me ! That's the only reason I can think of !
You’re not kidding. It took a set of orders to get me out of Texas and I went kicking and screaming. I can’t wait to get back home. I swear I’m gonna hit every Whataburger from Texarkana to home !!!
I did 8 years in prison. when I got out, this song was playing at the grayhound in corpus Christi. I was on my way back to Houston. my home. I was locked up for drugs. been clean 16 years now. never forget that day, I was free, clean and on my way back home.
Good for you..Welcome home Eric..
I’ve been smoking crack for 17 years. Started when I was 16
Glad you stayed clean, George would be proud too.

Luck of yours. It's not everybody has a chance like that. Enjoy it!
The last song my grandpa wanted to hear before he passed away. Rest in peace grandpa.
This was my mom’s favorite song, I played it for her while she was in the hospital right before she passed.
It's a true shame that real country music rarely gets attention anymore. An absolute classic.
It's not a shame because there is no real country anymore. All the top 50 country songs are all pop garbage.
Exactly
Such is the world you are living in now , destroyed only going one way,God bless
All i know is,this was a hit back in the old days, and i still love it today.
Agreed
I'm here because of The World's Best, as an immigrant in the U.S. I fell in love with Country Music since day one.
My 27 yr old son loves this song..my baby boy,, I love you so much ..ur my world.
My mom was fighting cancer but she didnt tell us she was dying. One night as I left the hpspital, I rode home crying because I couldn't stand watching her suffer. My dad could do this song so well at Karaoke. I listen to this every time I think of him, and so now, its on my dialy playlist.
Love you and miss you dad ❤
Song still reminds me of my dad, who was never there. But when he was, this song was playing. The older I get, the more I understand.
It's a song to remember those beyond our reach
I live in Alaska, but I grew up in Amarillo, and Amarillo is always on my mind, Born a Texan and always will be.
North Western Ontario Canada..I miss country music.
George Strait one of the truest cowboys of country music, a true legend.
But no wheres near as good as George Jones, and Hank Williams.
Today's Country singers can't hold a candle to George
thats the truth
gimme George and Hank anyday
I agree with that
Brian Evans he's the king of country forever
Chris stapleton is the only one who can hold a candle to any of this

I used to live in Amarillo, Texas but then I moved to California and listening to this song makes me miss 💔 Texas so much 💔

How can you listen to a song 100x per day on repeat at work for decades, and still get goosebumps and tears from it???!!
A great song about a broke rodeo cowboy. That fiddle playing at the end is so haunting...mesmerising !

that electric guitar is perfect in the last verse too.
The sound of twin fiddles is what you hear. It is AWESOME !!!

My best friend died and they played this song at his funeral and every time I here it I tear up 😭
Delta Zulue sorry for ya loss
im sorry for your loss
Delta Zulue ich feel with you try to be strong gunni
Delta Zulue my bae died before his 16th. I live because of him. A psychic told me once she saw a young man near me. ...he was bucking it to county fair in the sky. He was looking for eight when they pulled that gate. Amarillo's where he'll be.
I actually tear up when I hear "and friends are friends forever if the Lord is Lord of them.. And a Friend will not say Never . ".... But ultimately ...
I'm not much of a country fan, but I love this song.
lanna lane same. Just speaks to me some how
Five people you love w/o being "much of a country fan": George Strait, Keith Whitley, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Allison Krause. Also anything duoed or covered by Dolly Parton. Every truly musical soul loves "Jolene" it's made Miley Cyrus look like a philosopher.
Sweet home Alabama
Good cattlemen's song. No politics, no religion, just straight up country living and musical prose.
lanna lane I ain't got a dime, but what I got is mine. Wow, does that resonate! That song sure takes me to a better place and time than the one portrayed on the evening news. Amarillo is where I'll be
The Mongolian guy brought me here now I love country music due to his heavenly voice.
Now THAT’S the way country music is supposed to sound. None of this blend of pop, rock, or (egads!) rap. Thanks George for reminding us.
takes me back to riding in the car with my grandma while this cassette tape played. along with so many other great 80's and 90's country. this is music with so much feels.
listening while riding my bike through the countryside … awesome :)
Terry Stafford should receive credit for actually writing and recording this song in 1973.
👍
Country at its best! Hail the King

Love this song, one of the greatest ever.
I live in Amarillo, Texas!
My family and I listened to this while driving into Amarillo on a late summer night
I have been there , where everything that I had was what I had on ! Thank Almighty GOD That's not me now ! I have my own home now and it's paid for ! Why because Almighty GOD Loves me ! That's the only reason I can think of !
Kind of miss the late 80's in Winnie Texas...... saw him when he just started.... good song thanks!

I was born in L.A. moved to Arizona. Travel to Texas each year with buddies. This song is tops.
Amarillo is beautiful country. Nothing like hanging out with good Southern Folks and real cowboys.
God bless Texas
You’re not kidding. It took a set of orders to get me out of Texas and I went kicking and screaming. I can’t wait to get back home. I swear I’m gonna hit every Whataburger from Texarkana to home !!!
Amen
