  • There was drama at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, as a section of passengers had their traveling items confiscated by Kenya Revenue Authority Customs Officials, over unpaid duty. KRA stated that the enhanced screening of luggage being experienced at the busy Airport is a result of an increase in Taxable items, that should ordinarily be subjected to duty

This is like giving tourists and returning Kenyans an admission fees into our country. Worse still its unpredictable depending on the value of goods they carry. I can't believe overpaid people sat down in cabinet and came up with such a away to extort our people and tourists. Visitors by the way will still spend more money than that tax on hotels, tour guides, transport etc You chase them away you end up losing much more...

Kindly stop justifying corruption that you customs/KRA have been doing for decades..
You even have the courage to tell the world how this has been happening for such a long time.
I think CS Morkomen and Mutua should as well stop their side shows at the JKIA and get to do their work effectively.
Just train new customs staffs at the KRA and get to show them what is expected of them to do at the JKIA and replace them with the one's doing all these corruption at the Airport.
I tend to believe that this corrupt guys at the JKIA have been in that same department for long just to master on how to extort this tourists.
Am not proposing for them to be sacked or terminated from their work, because I tend to believe that most of them even can't adjust to find for themselves out here by doing business coz they are used to getting quick and easy money by corrupting.
Just transfer them to other different departments in a different ministry not necessarily at KRA and let them fetch for their families but under close supervision.

I was taxed 10k back in 2017 for being a Kenyan American carrying 4 suitcases , 2 for my personal effects and 2 for gifts for family that could not have costed me $500. Yet I could see other people walk by without being searched the way they searched my luggage. Those women are very jealous and biased. Even after one of the employees told me he will help me pass at a small fee. Didn't work! Taxes have to be paid but some of those employees take advantage of the tourists. Kenya has a lot of lessons to learn. When I came back to the USA, I declared all the goods I had and did not get taxed and welcomed back happily. My own Kenyan people harrassed me! Sad.

There’s almost no country in the world that will let you bring in a bunch of valuable goods that can be sold for profit( key word CAN doesn’t matter your intentions ) without taxing you.

I have travelled to Europe and at the airport upon arrival no one checks your luggage. The amount of tax that zakayo hopes to get from travellers is not even sufficient to build a proper cow shed. No government relies on taxing visitors at entry points for income, the amounts are minimal and simply not worth the the time.

Later some lady at the counter said that my luggage was smelling like smoke., l asked her if we could open my luggage as l had nothing to conceal. We checked together and there was nothing burning and l locked my luggage, l assumed all was in order… until l reached to my destination only to discover that they had my luggage bag zipperlock completely broken and my kid’s DVD player missing.

I lost more than 10 watches. I was so bitter about it. Imagine opening your luggage to find gifts you had even called the owners via zoom when buying they are missing! How do you even tell them that their gifts have been stolen at the airport!
Since that day I never carry any valuable gift on the main🧳. What's happening at the airport adds salt to already an open wound.

The 500dollar of 2014 is not the same as of 2023, prices of commodities have gone up, hence the cutoff 500dollar should be raised as the prices have also gone up, now that insistence of not changing a system because it benefits you is also called corruption of a system. That's why you find outcries because somehow the system is not functioning as it should.

$500dollars ni pesa kidogo sana.... considering people from dispora vitu hukua expensive compared to Kenyan shilling living cost. Vitu kama underwear, weaves, phones shoes perfume etc. Kenyans working abroad watakuwa wakirudi home mikono mitupu to their families. That is so unfair. Let them push that $500 to aleast $1500 . Juu mtu akirudi home after working for years abroad itakuwa TU chocolate unaeza letea watu.

Wow. Thanks for that expose. Getting in is a hustle… the shake downs by customs is a slap on the face… getting out is another hustle… I got conned by security airport one time when he claimed that I give him 300 for taxi from the gate to the airport terminal.. at that time the traffic was so bad I had to hop on a motorcycle to get me to the entrance…. Once the taxi got there he told me to pay an additional 300 to get me to the airport terminal.. and I told him I’ve already paid the security for that… and he told me that’s their fee just to call a taxi … wow shocked is an understatement. Name of the officer calvinces abonyo. This is an on going operation

In the UK if you bring over 200 cigarettes (10pkts) you must declare and pay tax. 10 pkts cost less than $100 back home. The gentleman had 3 brand new iPhones and for sure he must pay import duty no question about that. This rule has been there since 2004 , maybe people should check exactly when this was enacted. Even LH and GLA There're items which get confiscated due to one reason or another. Let's give credit where it's due and also complain when necessary. But bullets, guns, drugs, excessive gadgets, 20kgs extras for friends and relatives as presents such things should either be confiscated or tax must be paid.

A country that over tax her people, investors is a failing economy, instead of providing a favorable environment for businesses they are looting visitors and citizens,
Instead of overtaxation, help the citizens to have operable environment for business, and if you tax us we wont be complaining, but no job but the little we have you over tax.

The Nairobi Airport customs is known to be very corrupt, especially towards tourists. I was compelled to pay approximately $400 in fabricated tax fees for personal, used computer monitors.
Reflecting on the situation, I wish I had recorded the customs agent explaining the taxes, obtained a printed copy of their report, and recorded myself signing the document. Alternatively, leaving the monitors at the airport with a photo of the agent next to them might have been a better course of action.
By paying, you effectively admit guilt, and there is little chance of getting your money back. Unfortunately, there is no legal system to provide assistance in such cases.

In foreign airports even your underpant is scanned and facebook texts checked. Why would we allow pple to come in without being checked because of "customer experience"? Just put in a smooth system that minimises corruption and quickens the process but they must be checked and they must declare. 4 iphones are a lot to bring without declaration. In Australia you would have paid a fine of $20K
