When someone calls another person rich, it implies that the person has an endless supply of money and should therefore have no problem giving them money. It also appeals to a person's pride. It encourages the person to give them money to keep up the appearance of being rich even if they are not. Helping someone when you want to is one thing. Being obligated to pay for other peoples living expenses is a totally different thing. Set boundaries and stick with them.

Money is always a difficult subject. Here in the West, the obligation is (mostly) only to yourself and your children. In the Philippines, as a foreigner, you are always going to be thought of as rich. There are sometimes unfair expectations about what you can afford. Without going into too much detail, I'll say this - there is ALWAYS something going on.
Filipino families are BIG, especially by our standards and there is a lot more interaction with aunts/uncles/cousins/nieces and nephews. At some point, one or a few of them are going to get sick, have a typhoon blow a roof off a house, or pass away. That's not to mention the birthdays, Christmas (and even New Years) celebrations that some family members might be looking for a sponsor for. They won't even ask you (foreigner). They will approach your wife and sometimes accuse her of changing and spreading gossip if they don't get what they want. Family is a blessing in the Philippines, but sometimes also a curse. You have to try and understand the family dynamics as early as you can and establish the boundaries. If you try to help everyone, you go broke. Focus on only her parents and their absolute necessities (your wifes obligations that she already had before you came along), be kind and generous where you can. Set a budget for emergency funds, outside of your wife and kids and don't be bullied into spending more than you can afford. A good family will understand there are limits.
When it comes to helping each other out. Sure, for smaller things, we do that as a family, but if anything is bigger (like painting the house, driving me for hours to the city, etc.), I pay them. I pay them the same rate as I would have paid anyone else (far above the minimum wage). I don't expect them to do it for me for free and that way too, I don't feel obligated into anything else later.

This is setting men up to go broke in the Philippines.
Tell them to go pound sand.
Not your business, not your concern and definitely not your responsibility.

Our rule is, if the person does not work or even attempt to work, no helping lazy members. I have loaned her uncle money and yes he paid me back. You have to set the rules, and remember don’t give what you can’t afford to lose.

Only help those that are in need and not those who just leach off you. And also what you can afford to loose. Definitely help her parents. Always remember why you married your filipina wife. It is because she is feminine and traditional compared to the western girls. But do not forget why she is the way she is. It is because of her love of family and family values. Most western guys do not realize this. They take the best from what their filipina wife has to offer and not pay the cost. Her love of family means she will help them when they are in need. If you like a wife who do not help her family financially, or be more like you in terms of who you feel you are only responsible for (only your wife and kids), there are a lot of women just like that in your own countries.

@@Ericandcindysadventures Thanks. I just find it funny that people want the family oriented, loyal wives, but then complain when they realize that includes helping family. Traditional women often come with traditional family values like helping their family.

If a Filipina and he family can't financially sustain themselves on their own without your money,
leave her be somebody else's woman= problem.
    It's 2024,
she needs to provide her own financial security.

Married 26yrs to a Peruvian. We've always helped, it's not forced. Paying her sister's rent, basic bills etc for tbis entire time. I keep records, I've spent $60k over a 26yr period. That's nothing in my eyes.....
Now my wife went woke and divorced me...Probably gonna go marry the sister now, just to piss of the ex wife 😅

If you can afford it and it is appreciated (yes). Period. Why let loved ones suffer or a loved one family suffer? This of course is a case by case basis and must be reasonable. You can't save everybody.

Sadly I feel I am stuck paying. I should of never started. Not married but I paid for foods for her family and now they expect me to pay every time. Each grocery bill gets larger and larger some due inflation and now I personally feel they are buying more and more. My girlfriend keeps saying to spread your blessings, however it now is exceeding my budget.

the short answer is never. you can chip in taking care of her parents but it should never be your sole responsibility nor should you be "helping" or "supporting" financially with her siblings. if your filipina demands you to "support" her family. that's 100 percent a gold digger.

Hello, sad sad, the evil piece of paper with a value, most foreigners are having a tough time taking care of their responsibilities in their native countries ( eg.child support) . We now run to other countries, marry someone , get accepted by the family, and now its expats job to support the family ridiculous. Since when a marriage involves multiple people , it should be a 1 to 1.
If one can help out from time to time to family members, it is acceptable, but to think it's a regular occurrence, think again, this is not love ( stupidity, more like it).. Most expats are going broke in the Philippines because they can't say NO.. true love from any partner should not have a dollar value. Furthermore, one marry to create their primary family, to which the other becomes a secondary family...

This may vary from family to family. Filipinos have a culture called bayanihan. This means helping one another. So if you are married to a Filipino this will apply to you.

I believe if you are from the west and your exchange is in the USA $ I think it's better to invest in the family like a small business something in demand if the family is business minded!! It's possible to get along in family business. I have ducks and chickens investments and I'm retired so I say yes have a family business contributing equally with everyone involved.
