  • I'm confident that Core Keeper will one day be an exceptional game with tons of variety and stuff to do, but I don't think it's there quite yet.

    Director/creator of the game here. I absolutely agree with all the points brought up in this video. We are continuously working to improve the game, and I hope that in a few months or years down the line, all the constructive criticism highlighted in the video will have been addressed. :) A huge thank you for the amazing feedback. It genuinely helps steer the game in the right direction. Even if we on the team are already committed to the direction outlined in your video, having external feedback that aligns with our plan provides even more motivation.

    I was struck at first when you made the comparison between survival-crafting games (which I'm not personally into) and "metroidvanias" (which are perhaps my most prominent gaming "comfort food"), but thinking it over a bit I think I can meet you at least halfway: I certainly can't argue that a significant part of what separates a forgettable 'vania from a favorite isn't the anticipation of what nifty power or equipment you might stumble upon next, and how skillfully the game drip-feeds those rewards to the player.
    That said, while I imagine that at least some survival-crafting games also aim for this, for me another essential ingredient for a great metroidvania is how EVERY element of the game contributes to the sense that you're gradually mastering the world around you, not just in terms of the goodies you find or discovering where the interesting stuff is, but in how you organically grow more powerful not just stats-wise but get more comfortable with movement in combat in general, and will eventually re-encounter foes and obstacles that you used to dread but can now run circles around because you can "feel" the game in a way you couldn't at first.
    Again, I don't doubt that some SC titles offer the same thrill, but I would guess that most of them lean more towards the "spreadsheet" end of the equation as opposed to the action/platformer roots that most MVs are built upon, and the particularly tactile, not to mention "personal" (for lack of a better term) nature of mastering the latter is perhaps the x-factor that keeps me playing 'vanias after all these years but never getting into survival titles, though again, perhaps my unfamiliarity with the latter means I'm missing something.
    Looking forward to your next video, as always!

    I've recently played this game with a friend and my main gripe was that, even with the best available gear equipped, enemies in the outer biomes feel too difficult to fight: They can take you out in 2-3 hits while being sponges themselves. I remember trying to get to a temple to loot-fairly out in the desert region-after already having been there once and dying, and it took hours, because of all the enemies in the way. I tried taking out their spawn blocks, of course, but that's not always a healthy option when ten of them are shooting at you at once and turning this into a Touhou game.
    In the end, after dozens of subsequent deaths, I had to take the coward's way out and dig a tunnel while being as careful as possible to finally get back.

      I heard they disallow you from getting more than four Giant Mushrooms or Amber Larvae (the ones that give you HP permanently) in an update and I really don't care for that.

    Here at our channel we fully understand the feeling of having one-off highs. The mantra of "just make good content" may ring true, but at times it does feel like we are still at the mercy of algorithmic RNG which is certainly a shared frustration for all aspiring creators.
    You make great content, Mr. Skeleton. Thanks for the videos.

    You know, I kinda agree with this. Core Keeper has felt like the rare Terraria for me, where I can enjoy the game despite it being a mining slog early on. My attention was held a bit as I raided 'encampments' of enemies, but I doubt I'd be enjoying this game at all if I wasn't playing with friends.
    But even I would note that the variety is lacking. They try adding cool bonuses to armor sets, but in reality it's "the next tier is better." Heck, I'm going to be extremely sad if my late game Assassins Cloak and Hood (rare drops from the late game Desert Biome) end up getting outclassed later since I know there's still another biome past it at least. Notably, there are cool things you _can_ find, but they're technically insignificant in the grand scheme of things...
    Here's hoping they add that little bit. The Pet update was rad, and I'm enjoying the build variety they provide.

    Core Keeper is the definition of "Stop me if you heard this one before" right now. The game obviously needs more variety and actually interesting items, its extremely by the numbers, despite the sound and visuals being really nice. Another great video! Hopefully this game will become something fun at some point, as of right now it just looks boring to play when you have to just mine for ore with none of the excitement a game akin to Terraria or even Starbound brings.

    I think comparing this game to terraria is pretty unfair given that terraria has had over a decade to flourish while this game is still in early access.
    That being said, I agree with a majority of what you’ve said about the game. I got it in early july for 50% off and while I’ve enjoyed the game a ton so far, it had a lot of things that need to be ironed out. There is too little variety of enemies in every area, ESPECIALLY the outer three biomes. Speaking of those outer three biomes, the enemies that are out there are ridiculously strong, especially the ones in the desert. The difficulty jump is strange and I really do hope they focus on balancing.

    I really dislike the comment sections almost unanimous opinion that it's lackluster in early game, and they need core revamps when in reality they just need more content, which is on the way (and it's early access, can people stop comparing it to stardew and terraria when they've been out for a decade)

  • @heraland7804
    @heraland7804 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The biggest joke is that there actually is some interesting things out in each biome. There are some weapons you can craft that requires you find some special areas with unique items, these weapons have neat effects and are generally some of the strongest equipment you can find. There is also some random stuff like a mushroom that permanently increases your max health, a special dungeon with a reaper weapon inside it, a temple with a powerful pickaxe. These are all what you could consider "beef".
    HOWEVER, finding these things is absolute tedium, each biome is gigantic for no good reason other than to make finding the interesting stuff an absolute chore and there is no way to find these interesting things without just exploring in random directions until you find something. It is not uncommon to find yourself mapping the entirety of a biome just to find 3 small blips on the map you need to create a single weapon and this can take many hours.
    I know this because I suffered through it, I probably won't pick this up again until it's out of early access and even then I might not consider it. It's too bad because it feels like there is some great potential here but you REALLY gotta dig to find the interesting stuff.

    • @ASkeleton
      @ASkeleton  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I knew about the items that increase max health, but had no idea about special dungeons or temples. Game would really benefit from some kind of radar that gives a broad idea of where to go.

    Always so disappointing to see. I can tell we have a similar itch that we want to scratch, always looking for a game to be that next step after terraria: that game that makes you go, "oh so this is what a more modern version of terraria would look like!" But no one ever seems to get it right. Everyone misses the magic of that game, and it really is just as simple as having a lot of cool unique things to find. Genuinely the only people who seem to get that are the terraria modders! They know that genre of game is so hinged on finding new cool stuff that they just take that game and add more new cool stuff to it! One day I hope a survival crafting game will come out with as little regard for the basics as possible, just throw out most of the conventions and give us something different. Every game that comes out just feels like it has too much of a crutch on these basics that I want to see a game stand up, spit in it's face, and show us something wacky, bold, unique! Ah, but who knows, terraria really might be the only game to ever itch that scratch the way that I want these games to. I guess that's just a testament to its core ideas, and how long lasting they really are.

      Sad to hear it's disappointing!
      Being a super small team making a game of this scope takes time. We are super dedicated to it though, and plan to work on it for many years ahead. The criticism from the video is great. The reason most of it hasn't been fixed in the game is simply that it takes a lot of time. We're working extremely iteratively, taking one step at a time. In the coming months, we'll be working on several of the things outlined in this video. Of course, there are other aspects we want to improve on too, such as modding support, automation, mining QoLs, and so on.
      With that said, I hope we do not disappoint you a few years down the line. =)

      hey man, personally i think this game is off extremely well, super polished and a lot of variety in mechanics, but honestly the game only needs (in my opinion) more content on all levels, from the start. If you stop focusing on a further expansion of endgame, and revamp/add more enemies/structures in outer biomes, add randomized pet stats on the base pet, maybe categorized by type of pet, more items in early game to avoid rushing the first three bosses etc. I am super invested in this game though, the "problem" of not enough content is probably the best problem a game could have, since its literally a gem just waiting to be cracked open at one point! @@prantare
