Just completed both axles, 2002 Nissan Maxima GLE. For both sides - don't even think of doing this without an air gun! I suggest using bungy cords to hold the rotor assembly back out of the way. This makes access much easier. The drivers side can easily be accomplished at home on jack stands and alone - except for final torquing of the axle nut. The drivers side is easy. I did not lose any ATF and I did not replace the axle seals. No-one specs the cotter pins, I replaced with 3/16 x 1 3/4. Note that the control arm 15mm nut requires either a pneumatic socket or a DEEP WALL regular socket. Axle prys out easily as shown. Pop the axle back in with a deadblow rubber headed mallet, works great. The passengers side video has some shortcomings. The passengers side can be accomplished at home on jack stands and alone - except for final torquing of the axle nut, BUT. the passenger side has some challenges that are not addressed in the video!! About the passenger side: The three 12mm bolts are the challenge. The first one shown in the video can be accessed as shown with a 12mm box wrench. The second one shown in the video cannot be accessed as shown - you will REQUIRE a medium extension, a swivel joint (U-joint) and then a long extension. The third one is not shown in the video at all and you will REQUIRE a swivel socket (swivel built into the socket) and the two extensions and swivel joint as above - it's possible but requires patience and would not be possible for someone with large hands. Reach around and in from both sides! These bolts are not terribly tight, but access is the problem. This car has never seen salt, I would think twice about doing this on a northern car!! If you round off these bolt heads recovery would be via drilling out from the other side (i.e. from the wheel side), abandoning the threads in the bracket and re-installing with new bolts and locknuts, Space is challenging but this could be accomplished if necessary. Re-installing the 12mm bolts will REQUIRE a racket box wrench with a swivel head. Then once initially tightened use the extensions as above to firmly tighten. I did not lose any ATF and I did not replace the axle seals. No-one specs the cotter pins, I replaced with 3/16 x 1 3/4. Note that the control arm 15mm nut requires either a pneumatic socket or a DEEP WALL regular socket. Thanks for the videos and the great return policy!!
I've found 1A Auto very useful, last time I know how to replaced my 2000 Nissan Sentra window unit because of you guys. Have a little request hoping you guys will do a video on the CV axle and strut replacement on the Sentra. Thx, you guys rock!
This video is great. You can replace the axle also by disconnecting the tie rod end first. Next take the strut out. Then disconnect the axle. You’ll find that it’s so much easier for you to put the axle back in without the strut being in place. I’ve tried it both ways, the way in this video and removing the strut. You’ll be able to put the axle back in without the struggle you’ll have if you don’t take the strut out. If you have a lift like in this video then taking the lower control arm out is fine. I found out that the strut is in the way for you to line up the axle to get it back in. If you’re doing this at home take the strut out. You’ll be surprised how easy it’ll be. Also remove the ABS sensor before you take the strut out. This video is for someone with a shop lift. An excellent video! You can do what’s in this video at home, I’ve done it this way also. Thanks for an excellent video.
+kodiakfamily Thank you for the compliment. We're glad to hear your Maxima was able to be repaired with the help of our video. We hope to work with you again! 1aauto.com
Good video, wonder why they dropped (and replaced) the whole lower control arm instead of the Strut? I am doing brakes, likely replacing the caliper too (sticking), and with my CV joint boot cracked/deteriorated, since its almost 20 years old and never been replaced. I'm thinking of changing the Struts too. would it be best to drop it from the top instead of the lower control arm? (not on lift - using jack in driveway).
Is there a nut and bolt hold inner part of Cv axel? before you pry it with bar from trans body. My 1998 maxima had a screw holding Cv end to transmission body
I have a 2000 Maxima GLE. Is CV replacement essentially the same as this 2003? Also, this car has very low miles, less than 50K. Is it normal for the left (driver) side to wear out much sooner than the right? I'm just wondering if I should do them both, even though only the left has symptoms.
+TriodeLuvr This procedure will be the same for the 03. As for replacing both joints, it really depends. They aren't typically the sort of repair that you have to do in pairs, but it never hurts to replace them both. That said, since it's got 50k miles, chances are they've never been done, so it would probably be a good idea to change them both out. Thanks for checking out our videos! If any of our viewers need to make this repair, we carry the part shown in this video on our website. Here's a link to them. If you grab it, and it's loose then you would need to replace it. Also make sure that the wheels are tightened correctly, as this would also make that type of noise if you have a loose wheel. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
How to know is my axle is needing to replace ? I have vw passat 2001 manual gear ,and when i turn left in speed ,or rignt wheel making bam bam bam sound . Is it may be inner or outer cv axle ? Can you give me advice where to look ? Thanks.
Wow, that's a big job! Good work getting it done and not letting the size of the repair intimidate you. We're glad the video helped you out. Thanks for checking out our videos! Not to bad once it was apart passenger CV fought the most only on account of the passenger side has a carrier bearing type system with three bolts holding it onto the subframe so if anyone has issues 3 12mm bolts.
I need some helping advice I face a 96 Infiniti i30 manual the cv joint boot ripped an was like that for a while I finally found work a bought a new one the only problem is I cant seem to get it to seal I can get it almost in but it wont click an seal any idea why
When I make left turns I have a loud grinding noise coming from the front left. It only does it 2-3 times per drive, not on every single left turn. Im thinking this might be what it is. Ive also heard it come be a wheel bearing or struts? I like to fix my own car, is there a way to check to see if it is indeed the axle before I spend money on parts? Ive heard if one side is grinding then the other side needs replaced. So It grinds on left turns does that mean I need to change the passenger axle or is that not true?
+Dylan Mills Thank you for watching. It is possible that either the CV axle, or the hub and bearing is going bad. You would definitely want to check the driver side as the parts have less weight and are at an odd angle. 1aauto.com
Same thing happened to me but it was my passenger hub bearing...it exploded lol. Oh and I was driving it for a while with the bad hub and the heat welded on my axle nut...it was a pain in the butt to get it off. I suggest you take off the wheel and rotor. Spin the hub and see if it's binding. Also check your axle to see if the boot is blown.
WHat do you do is the the Stabalizer drop link wont come loose. It is seized with rust and the more I try the more the 14 bolt behind it gets rounded off. Seems like I'm gonna have to cut it off and replace it with a new one after the axle has been replaced.
Thank you for watching. You can try using some PB blaster or WD 40and a little torch. A little heat can go a long way sometimes. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
question I have a maxima 2011 automatic and when I drive it from zero to 40 miles, gas pedal feels like is grinding I decided to lift my car and turn it on all lifted put it on drive and it does make a noise close to the transmission. do you think is the cv axle !? I hope yes .
+Diana Hernandez Thank you for watching. It certainly could be the CV axle as a grinding noise would be relevant. To be certain, we recommend having a local shop diagnose the issue and you may use our videos to replace it! 1aauto.com
is the repair quicker, safer or what by removing the lower control arm bolts rather that the two strut bolts?? Since with the lower bolts removed an Alignment is probably in order, however not with just the strut bolts. Just trying to see what is the best way to proceed. Doing this tomorrow.
remover the lower ball joint and tie rod end and you'll be able to pull the hub assembly towards you and the axle spline will come out. less work a lot faster
Very helpful video, but I think it's critical that you should have at least mentioned the axle shaft seals should be inspected before putting in a brand new axle
+Joshua Harms Thank you for checking us out. We usually recommend a piece of wood on the end of the axle, and a mallet to separate completely if there is sufficient room. 1aauto.com
@Alex Demian I took out the axle, and we are installing the new one. However it seems to block up after pushing it in. It seems that it isnt going in all the way. Any tips? You may want to try to turn or re-position the axle to see if that makes a difference. Also make sure that there's not a notch, or some type of groove at the end of the axle that needs to line up with something in the differential. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

this is a non sld transmission...thats why the axel does not go all the way in...and you still see that ring dust cover at the end of axle...towards the transmission...and a lsd transmission goes all the way in and you dont see that ring dust cover at the end of axle.....am i wrong...lsd transmission are canadian...and non lsd transmission are usa...
remove the lower ball joint and tie rod end, and you'll be able to pull the hub assembly towards you and the axle spline will come out. less work a lot faster!
@Jasper Johnson what can you do if the axle doesent come out? You could try to spray it with some PB Blaster to loosen it up. A long breaker bar would also help if you do not have an impact gun. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

I've loosened axle nuts without an impact gun many times before. I've used a half inch ratchet with a jack handle. They always come off.
I just replaced the front drivers axel in a 2000 Maxima and the video was very helpful. thank you
