      @@elliottstokes3917 Nah it is actually "ironic" in this case.
      "Hedonism" literally refers to the sensual pleasures of human life; To which an android "Hedonism Bot" is not.
      Literal Irony.
      Since Futurama was actually written by someone it's also not just Irony but Dramatic Irony as well.
      (yes, I get the "its just coincidental" bender quote but still though- stop teaching wrong things!)

      @@elliottstokes3917 It's ironic, because "man of steel" is what you often call hard men who don't take time to relax and have fun. Stalin, the original man of steel, is an example of someone who didn't know how to relax and have fun.

    As much as he is disturbing, Hedonism Bot is rather helpful, if not outright kind in most of his interactions with the protagonists. He's never antagonistic or evil. I always liked that aspect of his personality.

    • @thetheory6159
      @thetheory6159 3 ปีที่แล้ว +505

      He's not evil, he's hedonistic. A lot of people will dislike that and think it's disturbing or gross, but it's just an aspect of personality, not directly related to morality. Hedonism is literally just doing what you want most at that moment. That's it. That's literally all there is to it. It doesn't mean "steal from others for your own gain" or "cause suffering", it is LITERALLY just "I do what I want when I want, no matter what others may think or what the consequences might be". A good natured hedonist could very well be generous if generosity was what he felt like at that moment.

    • @ADAJ342
      @ADAJ342 3 ปีที่แล้ว +194

      @@thetheory6159 ,correct me if im mistaken. But isn’t hedonism mostly linked to physical pleasure, materialism and keeping happiness at all costs?
      Like you said, it isn’t necessarily evil, but there’s nothing that suggests altruism either.

    • @Nightmare704RY
      @Nightmare704RY 3 ปีที่แล้ว +107

      @@ADAJ342 it depends of the character, for example Conan the barbarian was an hedonistic man in his youth, stealing what he wanted, fighting for money, and wasting all his hard gained wealth in booze and women with out remorse, hell, even getting the money for method of stealing or fighting was part of the fun for him.
      But in essence, hedonism is going for what makes you feel better when you want it, and that can be whatever depending on the individual.
      Granted it would be rare to see an altruistic hedonistic, but a generous one?
      You need people to invite for those wild lavish sex parties with loots of food and drink.

    You have to love him from a design perspective. So many robots are either pure abstract mechanisms, or just human shaped with weird bits and bobs. Hedonism Bot breaks that convention in such a simple, effortless way.
    Framed like a fat Greek man sitting on an elongated chair. The chair built into his body, like his back, but still retaining some motion in the upper abdomen to lean forward. While the feet of the chair are his actual feet, instead of having them at the end of his abdomen area. And his arms situated at the apex of the chair, right as the headrest curves into filigree.
    Its extremely unorthodox, like an upside down reversed centaur, but executed to well and never questioned. Its the design work you rarely see now adays, but has so much subtle and well working elements to it. Simply because of how his body is designed, his resting pose gives you everything you need to know about him without the character needing to even say anything. And plays directly into their own habits, such as using his own stomach as a table to hold things like grapes.

    The thing I love most about Hedonism Bot is the idea that it derives no actual pleasure from its tendencies
    It's merely programmed to engage in humanlike hedonistic activities forever, pushing to extremes, while inside it's calculating and cold and dead.
    Yet, compelled.
    Just like a true nymphomanic or other extreme addict.

      Hedonism: The philosophy that nobody likes to suffer, and everybody likes what they enjoy. Epicure, ancient Greek philosopher, was chastised by the stoics for being a hedonist, to which he said that he didn't like hangovers.
      Headonist: Someone who confronts things directly.

      @@alexanderzerka8477 It is you who is missing the point of the character and show. Hedonism Bot has life figured out, and its killjoys like you that make the world as fucked up as it is.
      People enjoying themselves without shame literally don't hurt you, or this imaginary abstraction called society. You just have a stick up your ass and more hang-ups than a closet. Hedonism Bot is one of the show's likable characters. Then there is you, the little man afraid of his own desires and full of shame and guilt whenever you inevitably give into temptation.
      We are at core hairless chimps and bonobos with fancy brains. It would make sense that we would be as pleasure seeking and fun loving as they.
      As long as all parties involve mutually desire it and consent, there is literally nothing of moral relevance to consider. Anything else is ones personal tastes and convictions at best.

    Too many of us ask "what is the practical function of hedonism bot?"
    That's like asking what is the practical function of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Van Gogh's "Starry Night," or the films of Stanley Kubrick.
