Renault ZOE Z.E50 all-electric hatchback / zero emission city car 2019 - 4k review | Fully Charged

  • ***Since this was shot, Renault have released some updates on the figures quoted in this episode, most notably the range of this Renault ZOE Z.E50 is now confirmed at 245 miles WLTP standardised cycle ( ≈ 394 km) and the acceleration from 50 - 75 mph (or 80 - 120 km/h) is 7.1 seconds.
[This represents an increase of 31% in range from the previous 2nd generation model (Z.E 40) that had a range of 186 miles ( ≈ 300 km) WLTP.]***
The Renault ZOE has always been a favourite affordable EV of Fully Charged and we're not alone as apparently "cumulative sales" make it the most common EV in Europe.
It might not look it, but this 3rd generation model is the latest, fastest, most rangey Renault ZOE all-electric hatchback. Crucially more of a techlift than a facelift; a 52kWh battery pack replaced the 40kWh, bringing a WLTP calculated range of 245 miles ( ≈ 394 km) - a 31% increase in range for this new Renault EV.
No test drives have been made of the new Renault ZOE Z.E50 electric supermini yet, but Jonny Smith heads to Paris, France, in another 4k review for the Fully Charged Show to explore the vastly improved dashboard, connectivity, 50kW fast charge ability and minor exterior tweakage of this already impressive and relatively cheap electric car.
    According to Renault:
"UK pricing and specification details will be out in the coming weeks".
"Fully Charged are driving the car on the International Press Launch at the end of October".
"New ZOE arrives in the UK showrooms from late Autumn".

Agree. Relatively affordable cars are far more significant than 100-200k EUR cars. Kudos for Nissan/Renault for starting with affordable EVs and pushing innovation through volume production.
The Germans are trying to start at the high end and hopefully work their way down to lower priced cars. However Tesla has already won that battle by moving from the Model S to Model 3 and having huge production volumes to drive costs down further, particularly battery costs. Tesla builds more Model 3s in one month than Porsche is planning (but not yet building) to build Taycans in a year.
Tesla has already outcompeted Porsche by offering similar performance as the Taycan at half the price with the Model 3 Performance. The standard range Model 3 costs about the same as a base BMW 3 series or a high spec new Nissan Leaf.

Yeah, it's great news but critically Renault have stomped down on battery upgrade schemes.
The 40 and 50kWh batteries are easily fitted in the older cars such as the ones with Continental and Renault 22kW motors.

@@bluebikerathar nope, they started in 2012 with *both* 60 *and* 85, the 60 simply had less cells in its pack. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tesla_Model_S#Battery " In 2012, the EPA range for the 60 kWh battery pack model was 208 mi (335 km)[100] and the 85 kWh battery was 265 miles (426 km).[101][102] According to Musk, the Model S has a battery with twice the energy density of that on the Nissan Leaf, but the difference in range is more than double. " So that only goes to show that Renault/Nissan started with lesser density cells, not that battery tech has advanced that much. Tesla already showed what was possible in 2012, and other brands catching up 8 years later is suddenly 'progress on bat tech' . Yeah right.

Except the audience for that is nothing compared to the demand for 250+ mile range SUVs. Most Americans prefer big vehicles with lots of range so they don’t have to worry about blasting the AC and driving at high speeds on the highway for hours. And the main target audience for the Zoe (high density city dwellers with limited parking and short commutes) are more and more moving away from car ownership altogether, instead relying on lyft/uber with the occasional rental for longer drives, having their groceries delivered, ordering food delivery, doing their shopping on amazon, etc. This type of car is perfect for Europe but likely not worth the effort to bring a brand to market and deal with the costs of homologation, additional testing, having qualified service staff, etc. That alone would eat up all their profit margins. By the time they bring it over, it will cost way too close to a base Model 3.

There are some things the driver should always have in front of themselves and some things which are better done with buttons because turns and roadbumps are a thing. And they seem to have done exactly that. No stupid power surge, no design experiments but instead a practical affordable evolution of what already was one of the most compelling EVs in its price range.

I've had my ZE40 for just under one year and I love it. There are some issues - the interior looks dated, the position of the cruise control/speed limiter switch and ECO mode switch is just batsh*t crazy, there are issues with the windscreen freezing if the air con temperature is set on low, the reflection of the dashboard onto the windscreen in bright sunlight is very distracting, etc... I'm glad some of these have been addressed - at least the interior looks a bit more modern now. No massive great big gear stick or handbrake anymore.
Adding 50kW CCS charging is also a big plus compared to my current 22kW max. That will make the longer journeys much more appealing - I've managed to go a whole year so far without needing to use a public charger, but it would be nice to have that option. If the range is reported as 242 miles, then it may be possible for a decent EV driver to get nearer to 260, so that's pretty good. The best I've done so far is about 205 miles.
Yeah, I'm sold. When it comes time to decide what to do with my current Zoe, I'm fairly likely to upgrade to a newer model now. Depending on cost, of course.

I'm a member of E-Car, and have been driving their Zoe since 2017. Have driven both mk1 & mk2 versions, so i'm absolutely salivating over the ZE.50, mainly because i'm hoping to purchase one! I don't actually own a car since I moved back from the USA in 2016, plus Watford council won't allow me a parking space, hence me joining E-Car! E-Car and the Zoe have helped me out enormously, and I have to say, have done the job of making me decide to no longer own ICE vehicles. This won't do 320km at highway speeds... 270km-280km if you're lucky. These things are cool for city traffic but still impractical if you do any kind of highway. Looks pretty good though I think it does look a little more aggressive. The material of the seats is interesting with the recycled stuff. I was expecting more than 50KW DC charging though to be honest. However, the car seems to have a lot of interesting interior features like the more Tesla-esque infotainment interface touch-screen and the inductive mobile phone charging. The route planning and car preheating are good up-to-date ideas though when Tesla fans have talked about things like that before I have never thought much of them. Overall I think it's pretty good and it has a few more of the things people like Teslas for, which makes it a little more desirable for me and definitely for a lot of other people, even if they are not essential features.
I wonder when they will reveal the electric Dacias? They are usually based on previous-generation Renault's so will they be revealed soon now that the first real generational change in the Zoe has come?

I generally agree. Although I rather meant the state of acceptance. You might be wrong with one thing though.
ZOE is definitely not like a Twingo.
The Twingo is within the (e-)Up!, Aygo (my current car), Citigo, i10 class, all around 3.6m long.
The ZOE is the Kleinwagen / Super Mini / City car class, since it is almost 4.1m long.
That makes it a competitor to Yaris, Polo, Clio and alike. The ID.3 is going to be about 4.25m long, so it is somewhere in between the ZOE and the (small) Golf category.

@AriesT I didn't look up the numbers. I was going by the looks. But the Zoe is a bit bigger than I thought then. Still, I think there is a bit of a different market for ID.3.
