I first saw a shishi-odoshi in Kill Bill, but didn't know what it was called. It's a Japanese bamboo fountain which makes a clacking noise intended to scare away deer. I made mine as a all-in-one unit, but you can make them in a lot of different ways.

if you watch kill bill again youll notice that the deer scarer is VERY slow and methodic. you want 10 seconds or so in between each pour for it to be a relaxing water feature. the faster it pours each time, every 2 seconds or so for yours, the more is actually becomes an annoying thing to hear constantly. to change the speed, plumb in a small ball valve after the outlet of your pump and adjust the flow to slow the speed with which the "knocker" fills. you also have it so that when your knocker pours its water it makes a hitting sound on something and then also hits the rock to make a second sound. the scarer in kill bill only has the hitting sound when it returns to its upright position, directly after pouring out its water. play with the weight distribution as well to slow the speed at which it "pops" back up to its upright position. i would also increase the height of the pourer so that it actually pours its water out into the pool and you can hear the water itself splashing. thats what makes it a water feature. if you cant hear the water pour into the pool its useless. slow and steady is what makes these machines beautiful. the faster and louder they actually are the worse of a serene water feature they become.
Yea I was confused when the water catching cup was so small, I just watched another video and it banged every 50 seconds. Maybe he just needs more weight? But also that’s probably how it scares deer, by taking a long period in between bangs so they don’t get accustomed to the noise.
But for a first attempt, I’m really impressed with this DIY.
Maybe he’ll make another one that’s improved
Most pumps have a water flow adjustment, which I’m sure he is aware of, and probably has it set up how he likes it. You can do the same as you like it.
That part where o ren ishii apologize’s to Beatrix kiddo I saw it
The purpose of this mechanism, as with many other old style Japanese conventions, is to be mindful of nature, and the sounds around you.
Shishi-odoshi is meant to create a rhythm in your mind in order to grasp the harmony of nature.
Take a moment at night and listen to it.
Try to slow its tempo*
what the harmony with rhe nature.??? they are a électrical motor pump...!!! sorry no harmony with that .. it's not natural rythm..
@@makakblan9181 well... original Shishi-odoshi (as they were used traditionally in Japan) weren't electrical motor pumps
This sound always helps me sleep
They were used for deer. They are now used for Aesthetic
@@Random--NPC Wikipedia...😂 actually harmony was always important in japan👍
Steve for future reference with bamboo, I have found those 'baffles' are what actually cause the bamboo to trap air and split the bamboo when its taken off its column and drying. You can relieve the pressure by drilling a small hole in the side, or cutting off both ends and busting out the baffles with a pole or stick.
Funny you mentioned Kill Bill because that's exactly where I first saw this. Just watched it again and decided I wanted to find out what that thing was, so I googled "japanese garden wooden water thing" lol. Apparently it was good enough, because I ended up on this video! Pretty cool project, I want to make my own now.
Same here. Just watched Kill Bill again, after many years, and wanted to find out more about that water feature. Very cool.
Also saw one in a Japanese garden, near where I live.
Would like to make one for my yard, and maybe a few for local streams.
Suggest slowing down the trickle of water, to make it knock slower.
Pretty cool you got over 1 million views.
same here, 6 years later. lol
Great video Steve! Your videos always show your process while not over-explaining. Cheers!
Awesome Project Steve!!!!
As always another great project but I have a problem. I guess I have nosey deer because they all gathered round to see what the new noise was and then drank the water out of the box. You sure it is supposed to scare them away?
John Last : Maybe it only scares Japanese deer. For American deer, the sound apparently says, “Hey deer, come get a nice drink of water!”
Theyre too domesticated i guess.
Thanks Steve you are one of the 1st guys I followed when starting woodworking a few years ago but never saw this one and I want to make one now and found this vid in search. Hope you and yours are well fella😊
I've noticed that the longer the back part of the two sections, the better the sound.
You are amazingly talented
Good example how you went through the construction piece by piece , getting the right balance is so important for the water level before it drops before it drops back to that GONK sound, Bamboo looks great too .
Love the way you made this .
I'm making one of these for my living room! Love the sound of it, so calming
Yeah I saw this in kill bill as well. But I've also seen them in Asia and found out what they were. I was just thinking I want a little fountain in my room, leading me here, and I've decided this would be perfect! Thanks for making this video!
As someone who enjoys anime from Japan, I've seen the shishi-odoshi used in several diffferent series, usually associated with a hot-spring, or an outdoor bath--but, never knew what it was until I ran into this vid!
Gotta love the net!
Steve, I just moved to Kentfield, to be closer to you, I enjoy listening to your shishi-odoshi, it helps me meditate and attracts the deer. :-)
I love your videos. I have learned a lot about woodworking. You make it informational as well as fun. Thanks for all the great ideas
Very cool and entertaining as always Steve.
Thanks.
I made one of these many years ago. I had a lot of trouble. How did you measure and get a perfect fit for the spout and upright stem? Great job.
I wasn't even aware there was such a thing till I saw this video...but in ths side lines there are about twenty different versions of this. It is a neat project. Keep em coming.
Great video! Loved it! Beautiful project results!
É trabalhoso, é!!! Mas, o charme e a delícia de tê-lo em casa é insuperável! Amei!! Parabéns pelo trabalho.
What a beautiful piece of art.. Bravo.. For all the work put in..

This is really cool. You should be a wood shop teacher lol
Groovy, can't wait to make it.
Me making a deer scare in Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Nice workshop, great tools and well explained
Interesting creation, nice project.
Great job and looks great
Outstanding effort x
hey stev, just looking at your meditative shishi osdishi, v nice, I think by extending the slit on the top side of the water catch toward the pivot the water wont run on to the outside of the bamboo and get the surrounding area as wet. Keep up the good work....
Great build and project Steve, I just inherited a bunch of bamboo, now I have a project to use some of it!
Very cool Steve - a great project!!
This shishi odoshi... really will make my backyard special...thnks for your time.....great job......n keep it up................ Andres ( NY )
My best friend lives at the lake and there's alot of wild bamboo growing there so I will most definitely take advantage of that and make one of these!
How did it hold up? I want to make one and I'd love to hear!
Another cool project Steve !
That is a wonderful project!!
Cool Project, Good use of the bamboo!!!
cool project. very different. keep 'em coming
Ultimate set of tools.
Very nice job, looks great.
Great job man
I really love your videos!
Hey, just down the road! Lots of deer.
Really enjoying your videos steve, I think I will need to make myself one of these!
I wonder how you come up with all the ideas. You're incredible...
Not completely sure if your box was leaking any, but coating it with a layer of fiberglass resin will work. I had the same predicament trying to figure out how to make a wood box air tight. Just brush it on the surface, and give the inside corners a couple extra coats to fill any gaps. Best thing is, you don't have to worry about your deck sealer wearing down, or missing a spot with the silicon.
Going to make one now. Awesome. Thanks Steve
I've been wondering what these were called and i would love to make one
good job on the garden feature. keep it up.
This is excellent...., not because I need to make one, its just the editing and info is spot on. This is a case of tell me and I'll listen, show me and I'll understand.....dead easy to follow and so well shot.....great stuff :))))
Awesome build! I think I'll give it a try!!
Hey Steve, how was/is the longevity of this project? Anything worth changing years on. I’d love to see a remake video at some stage
it's now year 2021, and I've had to dig a trench for Bamboo. The Shishi Odoshi would prove effective for irrigation. For staying healthy, Bamboo Robusta Clumps need proper drainage. So the water fountain moving the water source would prove not only functional but Aesthetically consistent with everything else going on. Like button smashed.
What are the most necessary tools I need to set up a workshop like yours?
This. Is. Amazing.
Very nice... How often do you have to refill it? I noticed that there is some leakage along the moving pole as it resets (near the washer). I'm looking for something that I can use to keep the deer away, 24/7.
Another great project of yours. I love it. Have you thought about powering it with some small solar panels?
Over all it looks great. Thank you for sharing.
Professional. Great work
Fun Project! What are the diameters of the bamboo poles that you used? That bigger pieces look like they might be 2"? Thanks!!
Great job, thank you!
What a fun project great job Steve.
Hi I really want to try this out but I'm just curious: Since you used natural wood to make this fountain, wouldn't the wood start to rot over time due to exposure to water or the elements? Is there any way to prevent that from happening or at least delay it?
i like the sound of the rock, really neat, I love it.
A thumbs up from me! Absolutely brilliant, I have been looking about how to make one of these. I have seen them in Japan, as well as Kill Bill, a brilliant film. Thank you for sharing:)
Nice iconic sound!
That's really nice. I would like to to have one . First time I ever heard on was in a SEGA Dreamcast game called Shenmue and I never knew the name of it until a year ago and I forget all about it until now. Wish I could make one like that. Good job
very nice!! thanks
I've wanted one since seeing it on Kill Bill too. Looks like I will be buying one for lack of tools to making my own!
Thanks. Very cool. I was hoping for more step by step on how you installed the pump so it directed the water from the pump through the bamboo and out. That wasn't clear for me. Sorry if it's 101, but I'm really new to installing pumps.
That's fantastic! I would like to make one!
The reason he went with bamboo was because during the final scenes in Kill Bill vol.1 this fountain played a role as the backdrop sound.
That's usually because the Shishi-odoshi is meant to be part of a larger setup. Traditional ones are usually connected with a small waterfall or stream through a series of tubes and the water just drains away into the soil. These tiny home made jobs, though entertaining to listen to, aren't similar. You have to obviously - as you would do with any standing water empty it every so often.
Very nice!
Amazing nice sound
Man U got a workshop I'm very jealous of
Perfect video ! THank you very much.
This look awesome
I love ur work .. i cant stop to look ur videos. Please keep it up :)
Beautiful!!
does the water go fast enough through the rocks down to the bottom of the box?
oh it's nice! enjoyed watching it.
Nice job. Looks great. I think I would have found a plastic water proof container and built around that avoid making a water tight box.
did you use any finish on the redwood at all? it will just hold up to the water?
Wonderful, I LOVE it!!
Can i use a nomal moter for this..such a fish tank moter
Let it hit different size hollowed out bamboo shoots. A few of them sound cool all together
Amazing.. im gonna made this... thank you Steve
What brand of t-track is that on your router table (assuming you made the table)?
Even tho you never answered me, i still like your show and the Shishi-odoshi i am building right now is for my dad, he loves bamboo...
so thx and have a good 2013 sir
Great job I will do this project once!
You should build a double teired one of these so when the water tips out it then goes into a smaller lower tank wich leeks into another tipping thing or have it tip into a another tiping part that tips once each time the main one tips twice nice video
Consider some finer mesh screen as well to prevent mosquitos from getting to the water. a scrap of window screen material on top of the metal mesh and under the rocks should do it.
it sounds like deer locking horns so wouldn't that attract deer?
Adorei Você tem uma mao ótima
How have u put the pipe of the pump inside the bamboo after sealing the bamboo
very nice sound.
is it better to buy a pump powered by solar?
do you have link for the pump?
What are the measurements for this, I would like to make one.
