I first saw a shishi-odoshi in Kill Bill, but didn't know what it was called. It's a Japanese bamboo fountain which makes a clacking noise intended to scare away deer. I made mine as a all-in-one unit, but you can make them in a lot of different ways.

if you watch kill bill again youll notice that the deer scarer is VERY slow and methodic. you want 10 seconds or so in between each pour for it to be a relaxing water feature. the faster it pours each time, every 2 seconds or so for yours, the more is actually becomes an annoying thing to hear constantly. to change the speed, plumb in a small ball valve after the outlet of your pump and adjust the flow to slow the speed with which the "knocker" fills. you also have it so that when your knocker pours its water it makes a hitting sound on something and then also hits the rock to make a second sound. the scarer in kill bill only has the hitting sound when it returns to its upright position, directly after pouring out its water. play with the weight distribution as well to slow the speed at which it "pops" back up to its upright position. i would also increase the height of the pourer so that it actually pours its water out into the pool and you can hear the water itself splashing. thats what makes it a water feature. if you cant hear the water pour into the pool its useless. slow and steady is what makes these machines beautiful. the faster and louder they actually are the worse of a serene water feature they become.

Yea I was confused when the water catching cup was so small, I just watched another video and it banged every 50 seconds. Maybe he just needs more weight? But also that’s probably how it scares deer, by taking a long period in between bangs so they don’t get accustomed to the noise.
But for a first attempt, I’m really impressed with this DIY.

Most pumps have a water flow adjustment, which I’m sure he is aware of, and probably has it set up how he likes it. You can do the same as you like it.

The purpose of this mechanism, as with many other old style Japanese conventions, is to be mindful of nature, and the sounds around you.
Shishi-odoshi is meant to create a rhythm in your mind in order to grasp the harmony of nature.
Take a moment at night and listen to it.
    Try to slow its tempo*

what the harmony with rhe nature.??? they are a électrical motor pump...!!! sorry no harmony with that .. it's not natural rythm..

Steve for future reference with bamboo, I have found those 'baffles' are what actually cause the bamboo to trap air and split the bamboo when its taken off its column and drying. You can relieve the pressure by drilling a small hole in the side, or cutting off both ends and busting out the baffles with a pole or stick.

Funny you mentioned Kill Bill because that's exactly where I first saw this. Just watched it again and decided I wanted to find out what that thing was, so I googled "japanese garden wooden water thing" lol. Apparently it was good enough, because I ended up on this video! Pretty cool project, I want to make my own now.

Same here. Just watched Kill Bill again, after many years, and wanted to find out more about that water feature. Very cool.
Also saw one in a Japanese garden, near where I live.
Would like to make one for my yard, and maybe a few for local streams.
Suggest slowing down the trickle of water, to make it knock slower.
Pretty cool you got over 1 million views.

As always another great project but I have a problem. I guess I have nosey deer because they all gathered round to see what the new noise was and then drank the water out of the box. You sure it is supposed to scare them away?

    • @censusgary

John Last : Maybe it only scares Japanese deer. For American deer, the sound apparently says, “Hey deer, come get a nice drink of water!”

Not completely sure if your box was leaking any, but coating it with a layer of fiberglass resin will work. I had the same predicament trying to figure out how to make a wood box air tight. Just brush it on the surface, and give the inside corners a couple extra coats to fill any gaps. Best thing is, you don't have to worry about your deck sealer wearing down, or missing a spot with the silicon.

it's now year 2021, and I've had to dig a trench for Bamboo. The Shishi Odoshi would prove effective for irrigation. For staying healthy, Bamboo Robusta Clumps need proper drainage. So the water fountain moving the water source would prove not only functional but Aesthetically consistent with everything else going on. Like button smashed.

That's usually because the Shishi-odoshi is meant to be part of a larger setup. Traditional ones are usually connected with a small waterfall or stream through a series of tubes and the water just drains away into the soil. These tiny home made jobs, though entertaining to listen to, aren't similar. You have to obviously - as you would do with any standing water empty it every so often.
