- Just a quick video showing how I built a simple shishi-odoshi (Japanese deer scarer) for my solar powered pond and stream system. The water for the shishi-odoshi is being pumped by a small solar powered fountain pump (amzn.to/3DfwhMC- Amazon affiliate link)connected to some 6mm vinyl tubing.

Brilliant! I have bamboo pipes on order to make one of these, so this is very handy. I intend to provide a water feed from my bog-in-a-barrel filter, using narrow bore plastic tubing. I’ll send you some pictures when I have it working. Hopefully, this will keep the heron away from my fish!

I've wanted to build one of these since before I started on a pond. I think the main thing I would have to fine-tune/get right is that natural reverb from a second hit on the rock like the deer-scarer fountain in Kill Bill lol.

Solar Shishi-odoshi ! I like the idea of adding solar powered additions to the solar powered area. Solid build tutorial, can always make it more fancy if you have the skills. Looks like it is working. I don't see any deer. Make a great day SHAH! Stay happy and hydrated!

Like the solar powered aspect, but honestly I think it's a great addition to any pond. Almost every pond will include either a filter, or a full running water feature, so you may as well integrate some of that flow into something dynamic like this. Bonus points for potentially scaring away pests. We're planning on putting in a small biodiversity pond in our garden soon, and have been having trouble with rabbits getting into our vegetables, so this is a shoe-in.
Hope it scares the rabbits. The birds don’t seem to care.

I wonder if this scares them more than the 100% coyote urine on wicks that I tried, or the large angry gardener bursting from the house and chasing them in the middle of the night? I was thinking of something like this but much louder. Not quite as loud as I was when crashing through the yard in the dark, but louder than this soft knocking. Maybe next will be a bucket of corn and bare wires hooked to a 12 volt battery...

I wish. But I’m not holding my breath. The birds have wiped out practically all my fish!
@@Ozponds OH😳 that sucks it’s sad when they disappear. I had that problem about 5-6 years ago, has a crane come and steal the fish for about two years. I put a net over my small pond and that got rid of it. Haven’t seen it since.
I might need to net, but I really don’t want too.
I want to build one, but if I could even find bamboo of that diameter in New Brunswick Canada, it would be $50 a piece. No fish eating birds yet for me (Options are heron, king fisher, bald eagle and osprey) but the dang racoons are nightly. Think the only thing that reliably works with them is the zappy zap from the 50 mile electric fence energizer...with barely 300 ft of wire 😂
@@blaircox1589 I’m in Ontario, have you tried tiki lamps, you just cut of the lamp part at the top and use the rest.

if you do a greater angle on the end of the bamboo that goes up and down maybe more water will go in the bambbo then on the outside?

Great! I like the twine part. I also built a shishi-odoshi and have a lot a water running down the bottom edge and was wondering what I could do to avoid it. Never thought about the twine. I will try this. Thanks.
I have two questions though, what is the power of your pump ? (how many litres/h, mine seems to be too powerfull and empty my reservoir at the end of the day although most the water is going back in) and also, what are roughly the dimensions of the tipping bamboo (the tipping bit and the end) as I have just moved mine and it would no longer tip as it did before and I am wondering if it is not due to a problem of having too much weight at the bottom.

I think the pump can deliver 300lph, however it is solar so it probably very rarely hits that mark. The tipping part is maybe 30cm long.
@@Ozponds Thanks. My pump is 500l/h and it is also solar. I tried before with a 180l/h but I do not know if the pump was faulty or had not enough power to get to the top of the bamboo stick. 30 cm long, noted 👍 but is it longer or shorter than the end bit?
@@Ozponds Thanks again, I did place a bit of twine today on the tip of the tilting part, not only if fixed the dripping problem but the weight of the wet twine fixed the tipping issues... Great stuff, I would have never thought about it. So again, thank you.
@@saraswatih9703 longer. The end bit has a small rock for weight.
@@Ozponds In my case, this was the tilting bit that was a problem, starting tilting then stopped in the middle, now with just the wet twine, it solved the problem. But again thanks for your input.
This one is my least favorite of your designs... I mean, the whole drain into the courtyard thing looks like a landslide disaster. Perhaps the bowl pouring into a small intake bay nestled in flowers is the way to go for this area. Your channel has all the best ideas... this one just isn't for me. I do like what you have done with everything else.
My vision is that all the rocks will grow moss. And there will be ferns and plants down in the basin area. Eventually the flat courtyard/ seating area will have a covered patio. But we will see if my vision comes to fruition 😉
