Band Leadership: I want to be section leader, BUT . . .

Here's a message I received from an aspiring section leader, and the answers and advice I offer in the video.
Hi!
I just wanted to say thank you for your videos! They've helped me understand how I can be a better leader and have made me more excited for the upcoming season (whatever that will look like). I play trumpet, I'm coming up on my junior year, and I really want to be section leader. Each section has two leaders, but one of the spots has already been filled (if you were a section leader last year and haven't graduated since, you're still a section leader the next year). My best friend (also a junior trumpet player) and I are applying for the same spot, and we're both around the same skill level. Though we've had three section leaders before, if we don't this year, I'm worried it'll make things weird between us. How do I lessen the tension?
Another question I have is, if I do get the position, how do I lead people who are older than me?
