  • When's the last time you saw a 1st Gen Isuzu Trooper motoring around? These things sure have become a rare sight even though they were once quite common. Today, we inspect what I believe to be a solid example worthy of a restoration (that bar is admittedly quite low). Join me as we introduce this amazing truck to the Auto Obsessive Garage fleet. #isuzutrooper #isuzu #carrepair

Wow, you're right this is a rare version, probably only US got that. No 2 door in other parts of the world, according to my internet knowledge, with that motor and drivetrain setup.
Drivetrain is the strongest combination for 1st Gen Trooper; 10-bolt front axle, 12-bolt rear axle with disc brake and MUA5C tranny. Since you guys in US get 2.8L GM motor, maybe this 4ZE1 2.6L is not so desireable. We, outside of US, prefer the 2.8L Turbo Diesel that came with the same drivetrain. I've seen many of you guys in US swap the 2.6L's EFI with Weber Carb for more easy maintenance and parts.
Well, goodluck with your project. Love to see the updates.

Thank you very much. I’d love to score a diesel model…perfect power plant for the truck. The 2.6 is pretty solid and I actually prefer it to the GM 2.8. These are well built trucks and are a blast to off-road with.

In colombia We have the 2.6 Isuzu engine 5 speed transmission all wheel disc brakes, that’s for the 1991 version, they are very strong and reliable

Can I request a clearer picture of the 4WD shifter lever? Ours has no markings anymore. 😅 I would love to see the markings on it. Thanks

Stoked you found such an awesome survivor! Can't wait to follow along with your restore. Just some positive criticism, the shaky camera was a little distracting. But you still did a wonderful job with this introduction to such a cool cool rig. I've had a handful of Troopers through the years. And very excited to see some quality content like what you got Goin on here. 🤙🏼 keep it up!

This summer I was given a two door, Shorty with 175,000 miles on it all original, but I think the engine may be seized. I’m gonna start work on it next summer. This was a vehicle that was specifically given to me to restore by the original owner
I don’t know much about them. My dad had one in Australia called jackaroo four-door which my wife and I drive around Australia. Not sure if I want to keep it or sell it

Probably deserves to be brought back to life. These engines can’t be too too hard to source.

Thanks for your comment I have a friend that has a machine shop I’m gonna take the motor out and give it to him and see what can be done with it before I make too many decisions
