The thermometer on my porch, in the shade, was 102F this afternoon. I don't even want to think how hot it was in full sun. Zero rain this month, and extreeme heat has everything dried out. It is the first time I've seen the grass die off since living in Sylacauga AL. To keep the garden going, I have had to switch to daily watering. The exceptions are my fruit trees which get watered every four days with the newest trees, two peach and a crabapple, watered every other day, and the GreenStalks and raised bed tomatoes watered every other day. No signs of fungi, and pest pressure is sunder control. I am harvesting something nearly every day, peppers, pole beans (red noodle beans this year), lemon squash, zucchini, cucumbers, and tomatoes. The Sugar Baby Watermelon aren't producing as much as I had hoped for, but the cantaloupe are doing great, with more female flowers for future fruit. I think the watermelon need more sunlight. I may try growing them in a different location next year, and double the amount 0f cantaloupe. The chicken run was delivered this afternoon. I'll inventory thre parts tomorrow, and assemble it Thursday and Friday. The chick's wings are fully feathered, and their tail feathers hacve grown in. They are making a mess, learning to fly, dust bath, and scratching the pine shaving bedding. I have to clean the waterer multiple times a day. One more week, and they go in the chicken coop. It is fully assembled, and the perimeter of its run is lined with concrete pavers.

Hornworms glow with a black light. Shine it on pepper and tomato plants, pick them off and put in a cup of dish soap or snip in half with scissors (YUK lol) Forgot to add: Your plants will regrow 😊

Hey Gary. Garden looking great as always. I'm year 4 with my current garden, but I'm still having trouble with growing peppers and eggplants in my raised beds. They do great in my grow bags. Peppers i planted at the same time in beds and grow bags look like night and day. I have no idea what to do.
I would try and amend the planting hole more. More peat and compost. That can help. Look at the soil difference. The pH in the ground can be different. @TheRustedGarden Hi Gary, I'm a transplant from Zone 5 to Frederick MD. My gardening season here (last Year) was so off because my internal gardening clock was still on Zone 5 lol. I found your videos late last fall and this year they have been so helpful. It's so nice to be able to have two or even three plantings in the same season. I have new seedlings in trays ready to go in the raised beds in a week or two. Means more to can but I'm happy about that. Today it's 93 degrees and sunny. All my plants have been under shade cloth for more than a week. I take it off early in the morning and put it back by late morning. Hqven't had too many problems thanks to your videos. 🙂

I plant my mini peppers in a half barrel, but I keep it up against the wall of the house so it doesn’t get too much rain. I’d rather water it than have them drown. I wish I had muscadine my cousin in North Carolina had them and I just love them but I’m way over here in the Virginia front Royal where the skyline Drive begins and we are getting some high 90s up to 90 day and I think Muska would be happy and maybe some collards I love some collards.

I’ve already harvested most of my garlic. It seems to be about a month early for most people. I thought I should wait because it was too early, so I had 4-5 that were too ripe and had lost their skins. I wish I’d pulled them out a couple weeks earlier.
@@Gardeningchristine Oh wow. I have to harvest mine asap. I see the yellow leaves but with the NY heat wave I've been watering the garden and had to wait until the soil dry out. I have my hardneck varieties scattered throughout the edible garden.
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Mine too but now I have to wait because I watered throughout the edible garden ( garlic is scattered all over) NY is going through a heat wave.
@@naturalliving2011 you don’t have to wait for dry soil. You can pull them any time. Just make sure they have plenty of room when you are curing them so no mold grows. If they are damper than usual, then flip them every day or so so they dry evenly.

When you sprayed your cucumbers, what did you spray them with? My cucumbers have a big cucumber beetle infestation. I sprayed them yesterday with Captain Jack's Insecticidal Super Soap. Fingers crossed.
I use dust on my cucumber for beetles. I put it on the outer leaves. Spinosad first. Sevin if it doesnt work.

We have so much Bassil we dont know where to put it anymore. We had one plant, let it grow to about 1 foot, cut it in half and planted the cutting. Kept doing this every two to three weeks. Now its too much hahaha
You can chop the basil up and put in an ice cube tray in olive oil. 😊
@@denisereynolds2308 didn't think about that. Thank you

Gary, I have tomato horn worms here in Alabama. I found 7 this year so far. They really decimated 2 or 3 of my jalapeños. I didn't know they are peppers. 😢 Do I need to cut back the skeletonized peppers? (there are a few leaves toward the bottom).
Hornworms glow with a black light. Shine it on pepper and tomato plants, pick them off and put in a cup of dish soap or snip in half with scissors (YUK lol)
Forgot to add: Your plants will regrow 😊
Try growing Basil around the plants once you get them under control. The smell tends to keep them away
They will come back and hit them with water-soluble nitrogen.

Maybe beneficial nematodes for the maggots that attacked the onions. I also highly recommend the Quickstar variety of Kohlrabi, which matures quickly. It has worked very well for me in Zone 6, Ohio.
Thanks

Glad to help and we really do have a long growing season.

What do I do if I think I have too much nitrogen in my soil. I'm waiting on new capsules for my home testing kit. I have a lot of green growth and not too many fruits.I use compost, agro thrive and espoma garden tone. I'm in central Florida 9b. Thanks for sharing your videos. Any advice is welcomed.
Nothing. It gets used up fast though. You cant diminish it.

With those Beets, you probably already know this but it's cercospora leaf spot. I know you don't mind it cause you said it doesn't affect the root size, but it can spread (ie to chard). Could treat with copper spray if you wanted
Thanks so much. I keep the shard on the other side of the garden now. Very appreciated.

I know it shouldn’t, but it bothers me when people say chemical fertilizers when they really mean synthetic. Nitrogen is a chemical element.
Synthetic became an issue when people hear it and or are told it is synthetic as in fake. You are right it is synthesized.
Lantern flies require the tough stuff. I haven’t seen them in my Alexandria, VA garden yet but expect them.
They are ridiculous.

That's scary. Last season they decimated my Hopi pale grey squash. Was hoping I had a better strategy this season. We will see. Thanks for your responses.
Look for the eggs brown in colour and destroy them, I did mine with good results

@@eddie-o5u You're welcome, good luck with your gardening
I plant my mini peppers in a half barrel, but I keep it up against the wall of the house so it doesn’t get too much rain. I’d rather water it than have them drown. I wish I had muscadine my cousin in North Carolina had them and I just love them but I’m way over here in the Virginia front Royal where the skyline Drive begins and we are getting some high 90s up to 90 day and I think Muska would be happy and maybe some collards I love some collards.
Excellent plan

Should you fertilize with the water soluble fertilizer before you water or after you water ? Also when should you plant potatoes ? Thank you for all of your videos !!!
It really doesnt matter with water soluble. Before or after in the ground. Probably after watering for containers. So you dont wash it out with a big watering. Potatoes went in a March but I am planting a second round now.The Rusted Garden Vegetable Seeds & Home Garden Supplies: www.therustedgarden.com

Great info. Thanks!
