  • Just a quick look at the new Wenonah Escapade canoe in Kevlar ultralight. Will do a review in the future after some experience with it but wanted to give a first look and impression. This canoe features the removable yoke and optional solo seat along with integrated skid plates. It weighs in at 46 pounds.

The tilt is so you can kneel

Would like to see link to video on further impressions. If not, then, maybe a comment?
ex: How many strokes per side before need to switch sides? And are you using straight or bent shaft paddle? Trips in the canoe? How does canoe behave with camping gear? etc.
    thanks

Is this a lake or river canoe? Looks like a river canoe. Nice boat. Some of the lakes around Wasilla/Palmer are ice free also.

+Rustic By Nature it would do well on both lakes and mild rivers. There is not much rocker so I wouldn't want to take it on anything much above a class 1 rapids

Great video! May I ask what this ended up costing? This is exactly what I want down to the solo seat and added plates. If not, that's ok too

Did you weigh the optional center seat and yoke ? (it needs a brace regardless)
I had an older Wenonah "Jensen 17'" with forward and aft cane seats and a sliding center seat...... wood gunwales.

I did not weight them by themselves but it is still in the mid 40# range for weight. Its amazing how light the canoes are nowadays

What are your impressions solo now that you've had the canoe. We are looking at our first canoe. We want to solo and tandem. We checked out a Spirit 2 and like the tractor seats and everyone is telling us not to go with Solo Plus. What are your impressions solo and tandem. Thanks

So far I have been really impressed with the canoe in both capacities. I use it more as a solo canoe and have taken it on some challenging river trips (challenging in that we were weaving through rocks left and right, did not take it on anything above a class 1 rapid). I also have used it on some lake trips both tandem and solo. I will say this is a light canoe and can be affected by the wind but it has not been a big detractor for me so far. I would recommend it. I called wenonah when I was looking at canoes and explained what I was looking to do with the canoe and they made some great recommendations. I have been very satisfied

It tracks better as a tandem but I have not had too many issues solo. It takes a little practice distributing the weight properly when paddling solo otherwise you can drift off track especially with wind. Once you get the weight distribution down it works well

Do you use a kayak paddle for solo? When you are solo are you taking gear with you for multiday trips? I don't plan on taking multiday solo trips so I will be paddling with minimal gear. I weigh about 200lbs. At what wind speed is soloing affected? Are you finding the Kevlar color is holding up to sun. I've read the Kevlar finish browns due to sun exposure over time. We would like one in Ivory. Was the replaceable yoke part of the center seat upgrade package or was it an extra cost. I'd like to also get foot rests for the stern and solo seating positions. Thanks

I use a standard canoe paddle when soloing. Thus far I have not experienced any browning of the canoe but it has one season on it so far. Most of my trips have been with just me and my dog, I sit in the solo seat and it works better if he is behind me. I have a couple trips with multiday gear in it. In terms of wind speed probably 10+ mph is when I notice the canoe being affected although it really matters what type of water you are on. The removable yoke was a separate cost. The solo seat was also a separate cost. I don't know about foot rest options but I haven't personally felt the need for a foot rest. The seat can be adjusted so you can kneel if you want to which I know a lot of guys prefer when solo paddling. That way you can rest on the seat while kneeling which eases the strain on the knees. I haven't experimented paddling this way much but that is a goal this next season.

Is the removable yoke turning out to be a good purchase? Do you think you could carry the canoe easily without it? Thanks

That yoke doesn't look very comfortable.

Not too bad. You could put some aftermarket pads on if you want. I just wear my life vest and it adds a little cushion. The light weight nature of the canoe makes the biggest difference
