Have you read the Caraval trilogy? I feel like everyone who talks about Once Upon a Broken Heart has read it or never even mentions it, which came first. Personally I really liked it and though I haven’t read the spin off trilogy yet, I think it’s less confusing and all over the place like a lot of people have been saying about the spin off. Definitely whimsical and fairy tale-esque but definitely worth the read imo

For anyone who wants a sweet, raw, and genuine romance(s) with a tense dark fairytale setting, please read A River Enchanted by Rebecca Ross. You’ve got two couples who have two different dynamics but their stories made me cry. Easy 5 stars. Genuinely lovely.
This piqued my interest to start on that series. I like Rebecca Ross' writing style and just recently finished Ruthless Vows. River enchanted is waiting for me on my bookshelf but I always ended up picking other books instead 😅

For romantasy, I loved the Heartstone trilogy by Elle Katharine White. The first book is a Pride and Prejudice retelling with dragons. The second book kind of lags a bit but the third one has a major character death and really plays into the world building and folklore that hits. Tobble the gnome is my favorite character.
I hope you do give Discworld another go. Like you said, the tastes vary between the charaters. I personally am not a big fan of the City Watch books (though I know Guard Guards in particular is popular) and I would point you at the Witches books or Rincewind stories as some of the best.
I absolutely adored Gideon the Ninth and the ending absolutely wrecked me! I’m hoping to get to the next book soon. Even if you didn’t like Guards Guards I recommend looking at some of the other series within the Discworld universe (the Witches books are really good!) because they all kind of have different vibes depending on the story

I’ll have to look into the duologies I’ve read and see if that’s often the case or not. Sequels in general I think can be really tough, especially when they end a story, so perhaps it’s more that than anything 🤔

I was also disappointed with a curse for true love. I'd absolutely loved that series up until that point, even if it was absolutely ridiculous at times, I could not get enough of Eva and jacks. And then iw as dying for a year, waiting for the third book to come out, only to be presented with...whatever that was. Like it wasn't terrible. I'd still give it like 4⭐️ but the first two I gave 5⭐️. ACFTL just felt so rushed, apollos pov was so unnecessary, I would have preferred more of jacks and Eva. I thought we were going to get MORE jacks and Eva in this book then we might have in others, but instead we got the least out if any of the books! And yeah, I didn't really like how the amnesia trope was done. Also, they FINALLY get together, they FINALLY kiss, and we ONLY GET ONE KISS? THATS IT? after all that waiting, they kiss and then THE END? What? No? I felt like all of the angst and tesion and yearning from the first two books was gone. 😭 So disappointed with it.
Sun Eater is a relatively new series. 6 of 7 books are done. It is one of the best series i've ever read! I really love it because the prose is good, the action is good, there are slice of life moments, and there is one character POV throughout all books, so you really get to know the main character and his development well.
I find Adrian Tchaikovsky so interesting - I thought Guns of the Dawn was fine, but I've DNF'd Empire of Black and Gold twice, whereas I loved the whole Children of Time series and the Bioforms books...
I've read Cobalt Red, really good book. Also worth checking out if you haven't on that subject King Leopold's Ghost by Adam Hochschild this explores the exploitation of the Congo Free State by King Leopold II of Belgium between 1885 and 1908 I also read The Lumumba Plot by Stuart A. Reid about the U.S.-sanctioned plot to assassinate the democratically elected leader of the newly independent Congo Heavy books to be sure but worth it
I really loved the first one but this one did next to nothing for me... I'm not big on sequels either except the Everflame series that I'm on right now from Penn Cole book two was a 5 star for me curious if.youre gonna check that out
So far pretty good year.... The Heroes and Lies of Locke Lamora both very good as expected. Godkiller I was leery of as it was a "booktube darling" but I enjoyed it too. Dragon Republic and Argent to the Stars were ok-ish. Then out of nowhere Empress of Forever and All the Seas of the World were absolutely spectacular and I recommend them to anyone who will listen. Age of Madness triology I picked up last week and is on the shelf just waiting.
I read Howl's Moving Castle back in middle school over 20 years ago now, and disliked the movie for its changes. Just listened to the audiobook for the first time since then, and I feel justified in that opinion. I understand how most people prefer the movie and most people in fact don't even realize it's based on a book, but the tone in the book for me is so vastly different to the tone of the movie that they seem like completely different stories with the movie just usurping the characters.
Are you going to finish the guards books in Discworld? Have you read other parts? Curious because Guards Guards is the only one I've read and my take was similar.
I was interested in botanical daughter. I think it’s still sitting in my shopping cart. Try Mort by terry pratchett next I really think you’ll like it. Especially in between other series
For the Locked Tomb series, GtN and HtN are very much paired together and I would honestly recommend rereading them both at some point after HtN. This series is definitely made to be reread, there's so much more to find second time round, esp after the events of HtN. NtN, on the other hand, is somewhere between an interlude in the series and a part 1 of AtN which you're absolutely going to want to jump right into afterward. It might even be worth holding off on reading it until Alecto's release date is announced for which we don't yet have an ETA. It's still really, really good and I love Nona (the person (oh, and also her dog, Noodle)) to pieces but it's definitely more build up than the other two.
You said that will of the many is a lot like some other fantasy you've read. I was out of the fantasy loop for a long time so maybe i've missed those books. Can you give some examples? This book really worked for me and i'd like to read more like it.
I always felt that Orconomics had a better ratio of silly humor to real life satire in a fantasy world than Guards Guards. The silliness was a side, the satire was the main course in Orconomics. Also, the characters and, suprisingly, the romance, perfect!

The War of Lost Hearts is a series that is pretty balanced when it comes to plot and romance. It's by the same author of 'Serpent and the wings of night'. It also has a very interesting element that I haven't seen in another romantasy. (Can't say what cause it's a spoiler)
I really recommend reading Harrow the Ninth soon after Gideon the Ninth. You really want events to be fresh in your mind if possible. This series is one of my all time favorites and I agree that it’s a delightful mix of brilliant and ridiculous and is a complete genre bender. Also, the audiobooks for this series are phenomenal and I really recommend listening to them!
One of my new favorite series this year is the devoured worlds series by Megan E. O’keefe. The audio book narrator is great. Dam near cried at the end!

I really loved the first one but this one did next to nothing for me... I'm not big on sequels either except the Everflame series that I'm on right now from Penn Cole book two was a 5 star for me curious if.youre gonna check that out
So far pretty good year.... The Heroes and Lies of Locke Lamora both very good as expected. Godkiller I was leery of as it was a "booktube darling" but I enjoyed it too. Dragon Republic and Argent to the Stars were ok-ish. Then out of nowhere Empress of Forever and All the Seas of the World were absolutely spectacular and I recommend them to anyone who will listen.
Age of Madness triology I picked up last week and is on the shelf just waiting.
I read Howl's Moving Castle back in middle school over 20 years ago now, and disliked the movie for its changes. Just listened to the audiobook for the first time since then, and I feel justified in that opinion. I understand how most people prefer the movie and most people in fact don't even realize it's based on a book, but the tone in the book for me is so vastly different to the tone of the movie that they seem like completely different stories with the movie just usurping the characters.
Echo everything you said about the Age of Madness. Literally. Its probably my favorite completed trilogy of all time.
Are you going to finish the guards books in Discworld? Have you read other parts? Curious because Guards Guards is the only one I've read and my take was similar.
I was interested in botanical daughter. I think it’s still sitting in my shopping cart. Try Mort by terry pratchett next I really think you’ll like it. Especially in between other series
For the Locked Tomb series, GtN and HtN are very much paired together and I would honestly recommend rereading them both at some point after HtN. This series is definitely made to be reread, there's so much more to find second time round, esp after the events of HtN.
NtN, on the other hand, is somewhere between an interlude in the series and a part 1 of AtN which you're absolutely going to want to jump right into afterward. It might even be worth holding off on reading it until Alecto's release date is announced for which we don't yet have an ETA. It's still really, really good and I love Nona (the person (oh, and also her dog, Noodle)) to pieces but it's definitely more build up than the other two.
You said that will of the many is a lot like some other fantasy you've read. I was out of the fantasy loop for a long time so maybe i've missed those books. Can you give some examples? This book really worked for me and i'd like to read more like it.
I always felt that Orconomics had a better ratio of silly humor to real life satire in a fantasy world than Guards Guards. The silliness was a side, the satire was the main course in Orconomics. Also, the characters and, suprisingly, the romance, perfect!

The War of Lost Hearts is a series that is pretty balanced when it comes to plot and romance. It's by the same author of 'Serpent and the wings of night'. It also has a very interesting element that I haven't seen in another romantasy. (Can't say what cause it's a spoiler)
I love this, I need some new things to read that are of quality writing and appropriate intensity of storytelling
I really recommend reading Harrow the Ninth soon after Gideon the Ninth. You really want events to be fresh in your mind if possible. This series is one of my all time favorites and I agree that it’s a delightful mix of brilliant and ridiculous and is a complete genre bender. Also, the audiobooks for this series are phenomenal and I really recommend listening to them!
What did you think of the epilogue of Dark Star Burning?
One of my new favorite series this year is the devoured worlds series by Megan E. O’keefe. The audio book narrator is great. Dam near cried at the end!
