- Hello and welcome to the Whoniverse and to another instalment of the History of Doctor Who series, this time I’m not looking at a universe conquering species but a tin dog. Yes the Doctor’s past travelling companion K9. There have been many versions of K9 and he has appeared alongside numerous Doctor’s and other companions. So to shake things up a bit let’s give a dog a bone and check out the History of K9 in this video!

I absolutely enjoyed watching k-9 beat the 4th Doctor in a game of chess...
Since the 4th Doctor built mk-2 with time lord tech I would think that the blueprints are stored in the tardis & can be rebuilt, updated, etc at any time... ^_^
Maybe next time The Doctor gets frustrated at an appliance, rather than a Clockwork Squirrel, they'll rebuild K-9

Although K-9 1.5 didn't get a great reception, I would have liked to have seen him with the latest incarnations from the Twelfth Doctor onwards to see what they thought of his fresh new design compared to the classic disco design we all know and love.
I can only imagine the dynamic between mark 1.5 and the 12th doctor. A Scottish man and a hovering tin dog. Unfortunately we don't live in such an ideal timeline, Not to mention licensing is very difficult.
Pretty sure that k9 was from like the 90s or 80s but the 10th doctor did make a clockwork squirrel it was never in an episode except for mabey in the background he made it from a raido they also aprently made a prop and the actress of Clara has it in her house

The K-9 spinoff was the first thing of Doctor Who I’d ever seen, and some friends 7th birthday party, when I’m guessing Christofer Eccleston was the Doctor, had tiny TARDIS’s as party bags.
Coincidentally, it was the same for me too. In South East Asia, the series was being run on Cartoon Network prior to their CN Real initiative phase. (I remember when because the re-branding to the check-it 1.0 hadn't happened yet.)

I LOVE K9!!! Currently working on a cross stitch featuring an illustration used in Doctor Who Legacy :) Thanks for including the K9 series! I can't pick my favorite K9 story...I love them all! I did really enjoy when K9 was having to explain to the Doctor why he should let Romana ask the questions on Zanak in Pirate Planet :)

John Leeson will always be the voice of K-9 for me. It upset me when he was replaced by David Brierly - his voice didn't seem to fit the character. Was very glad that Leeson came back for later episodes and the Big Finish audios. Thanks for the video!
he wasn't replaced per say he chose to leave until tempted back by John Turner for the last season

K9 is one of the best companions, very iconic in Doctor Who. I just did a review of Warriors of the deep if you want to check it out
Best K9 scene: K9 battling the flying robot parrot, Polyphase Avatron, in the Pirate Planet. Only Douglas Adams could have created that scene.
A minor correction... Brendan Richards from K9&Co was the ward of Sarah-Jane Smith's Aunt Lavinia, not Sarah-Jane's foster brother
Wow! That moment when you realize you missed like 90% of the episodes!!! I just remember a few episodes with Tom Baker. I didn't realize there was this much to it. Very interesting.

The original K9 Doctor Who 1980s theme music and the Tanzanian capital city of Dar Es Salaam. A match made in heaven. Truely.

K9 needs a vortex manipulator to help the Doctor more effectively.
All those models and they always used a trapezoid box as a body. Most models couldn't cover rough terrain so they never upgraded to a quadruped. Even the 5th was simply a streamlined body with hover abilities. Was he designed to be a Scottish Terrier?

There was also a 1998 or 97 short film with a streamlined flying K9 to sell a possible series. It was the best version!
He also shows up in Fallout 2 as a potential companion. Sadly, it only has a standard generic robot dog model due to budget reasons. Which is funny because the model was created because they planned to feature robot dogs as enemies at some point, but that was cut from the game, resulting in its model being unique anyway.
We hope they bring k9 back again in new doctor who season in future
@7:57 This K-9 is not K-9. It has nothing to do with Doctor Who, the series is not a spin off of Doctor Who and it was made by Channel Ten here in Brisbane, Australia. The creator of K-9 and the BBC had a falling out, he was refusing to let the BBC use the character in episodes of Doctor Who and wanted to go make his own series. They, in turn, told him in no uncertain terms that if they were to make anything with the character it was not canonical to Who lore and must NOT have ANYTHING to do with the Whoniverse even hinted at within the show.
This is why he 'regenerates' and has his memory wiped. The same is true of the Daleks. The creator can refuse the BBC permission to use them, but the creator can not go and create something to do with the Who universe, with them, without the BBC's permission.
I wondered why the different look. The 'ownership' bit has always confused me about dr who.

So going off the basis that spinoffs occur with the concurrent Doctor. It would be between 10 and 11.

Wrong. The first K9, which was btw K9 mk1, was built for the Professor. K9 mk 1 stayed with Leela on Gallifrey, K9 mk2 stayed with Romana (2) in E-Space, K9 mk3 was a present for Sarah Jane Smith from the 4th Doc which was replaced by the 10th Doc and rechristened K9 mk4. End of. ☺
