You can use etching process faster and close to the same look but this is pretty cool if you have the money and tech skills to setup.
You could hand chisel the leaves to give it more of a handmade look and then fill it all up with an epoxy. I have to say I am impressed with the effect you managed to create.

That looks fantastic. I'd love to see how you attache a top like this. I don't cut the pickup holes into the top until after it's attached, so it would be interesting for me to see someone glue on the top when it's already basically finished.
It's easy. I just glue and clamp. Everything line ups because the top and body were cut on a CNC machine.

Thanks. What I take away from this is don't buy an x carve unless you also want monthly payments to use the program. Or you get a free crappy program. Glad I found that out. I was actually considering buying one. I think I'll keep on looking.

Very nice! I'm not crazy about visiting a website to use proprietary CAM tools with a monthly subscription service. I'd rather but the software outright but it seems that the industry is moving to a rental model rather than a software purchase model. However, the high resolution 3D rendering looked great. What did you do to remove the CNC carved fuzzies? Did you use anything more abrasive than paper towels?

No, you can't. I'll put s towel over the top followed by a slab of plywood or mdf before I clamp it.

I use a sharp engraving bit in the router and place it at one end of the centerline on the blank. Then I jog the router to the other end of the centerline and adjust if necessary so that I can jog it back and forth (or side to side depending on whether I am aligning on the x- or y-axis) to make sure the point of the engraving bit follows the centerline from one end to the other. Not sure about the Illustrator export problem. Mine always export at actual size.
Thanks for the answer! Just to make sure i get it correctly: you pin point the center line extremities with an engraving bit, I assume the smallest one to be precise, and use ont of these two point as "zero" position? And if yes, are you able to change the bit to switch to a bigger one to do the job? I've read on X-Carve site that it's isn't easy nor recommended. I bought a contraption called Triquettra that seems to ease and "automatize" the zeroing process, but it's only working on PC and not Mac, so I didn't use t yet.
I pinpoint the extremities of the centerline with a sharp engraving bit to make sure the blank is square with the x axis. Next, I manually move the router so the point of the bit is right on the middle of the centerline. If the blank is 18 inches long that means the bit will be at 9 inches along the centerline. At that point, I switch on the controller and raise the bit .1 inches to clear the top of the blank. Then I jog the router 9 inches toward me on the x. If the blank is 14 inches wide, I'll jog the router 7 inches on the y. That put the center of the bit on the xy zero. Up to this point, I have only hand tightened the the collet so the bit will be easy to remove. Now I raise the router so I can remove the engraving bit and replace it with the cutting bit I intend to use. I only hand tighten it enough to hold it in place. Sometimes I have to jog the router away from the blank to get enough access to change the bit, but I do this in 1 inch increments so I can easily reverse the movements to get back to the xy zero. Once the cutting bit is hand tightened and the router is at the xy zero, I loosen the collet and let the bit drop down to the surface of the blank. Then I tighten the collet to secure the bit for carving. Now the bit is in the xyz zero and ready to carve.
OK, I see! Thanks for the detailed explanation. I'll try this method and let you know. Until now, I only made "easy" cut with no center line. Just discover recently it was possible to set different "cut" on a same project and at the same time! Learning curve, learning curve…

Now I am concerned about that wood. Normaly when you paint with oil based paints you have to prime the surface with gesso or acrylic paint because the oil in the paints will over time corrode and start to rot the wood, destroying the that beautiful piece of guitar top. You can read more about this here: www.quora.com/Can-oil-paint-be-used-on-wood if you feel like it.
That and you should be quite careful with paint thinners and even the oil paint itself because you are using the artist level grade ones that have much more pigment(and its more refined) than oil. So look for the AP seal on the tubes and you should be fine, if it says CL you should take proper cautions while using them, you can also read more about it here: www.acmiart.org .
