  • The Miami Dolphins and Tua threw faster than anyone in 2023. While some say this is a sign of Tua not being good enough, Curtis uses Tom Brady and his time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to show the real drivers and rationale behind a speed throw offense.

    Thanks for the great content, Curtis. Your channel is the reason I cringe when I hear so called Dolphins writers continually ignore the pass block win rate of this oline when “evaluating” Tua. It’s content like this that allows me to keep a level head about our QB. The polarization of Tua attracts clicks and caters to the low information football fan. Unfortunately trends like these are not unique to football.

    Thanks for the shout-out, Curtis. Great job as usual. You took this in a far deeper direction than I was planning to. It is so frustrating when both local media and national pundits don't delve into how this offensive line was historically poor last year. It is propped up by scheme, playmakers, and quarterback. This is a situation where surface stats completely misrepresent reality. You're one of the few people to analyze the entire picture. I think a lot of us suspect this line was fraudulent, but you're the first to show why.

No other team in the NFL had that... 3 teams with 2, but not all three. That says McD was 100% trying to mitigate pressure as they are the three key ways to do it.

    Another great video brother. Mcdaniel deserves more credit than people realize. Dan Orlovsky pointed out that it's very unlikely that 5 qbs can run this Mcdaniel offense better than Tua. Dan didn't mean that literally, he meant under the circumstances that Tua is in with the bad offensive line. Tua has no choice but to get the ball out quick and Mcdaniel has done a good job of gelling the speed of the roster and tuas quick realease into a top tier Offense for 2 straight seasons. Credit to Mcdaniel for evaluating all of these variables and plugging everything together to come up with this product and credit goes to Tua for having the skillset to help this offense. If we had a good O-Line this Mcdaniel offense would look a little different and most nfl qbs can be plugged right in.

    Good stuff. Whatever the truth of Brady's comment, as you pointed out, in the case of Tua it's a moot point. Tua has to throw quickly because the OL doesn't give him much time at all. The fact that Tua can consistently get the ball out as quickly as he does is astounding. Still, if Brady is right, then it's one more condemnation of Grier's team building because Grier has constructed the team to be this way.

    • @AcePerHead
      @AcePerHead  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      He didn't make a comment, but his offensive scheme designed by him and the OC did in how they responded to a faltering OL and increasing pressure. Undeniable fundamental football philosophy is you offset pressure with 3 things: screens, quicker throws, and extra bodies to protect... Notice how our screen game went crazy high from mid-season on. HUGE red flag.

    My issue is... I don't discredit that he has a lot of air yards, but I don't think it's coincidence either that Waddle and Hill both had experience as successful punt returners and McDaniel has schemed the offense so that many of the deep balls are just Tua taking 3 steps or hitting a Playaction and then throwing an "arm punt" while they track and adjust to it in flight for 4 seconds then make the catch.
    Translation: even on balls that travel far in the air, a lot of the result is still his receivers doing the heavy lifting and with less talented receivers he would likely struggle in that regard as well. Thus the reason they traded for Tyreek in the first place, are already talking to him about more money and extended Waddle b4 Tua... idk just an opinion

    • @AcePerHead
      @AcePerHead  4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Okay, let's say that's true... if it was the primary driver then you wouldn't need all the PA (PA is for pass protection) and you wouldn't get so much non PA pressure and wouldn't have a crazy 2.08 Blitz TT... all of these (among others), Kevin, say protection is an issue... a large issue when you factor in the rise in screens and edge throws... other protection red flags. You DON'T see all these red flags from any good OL even if the QB is poor. You might get some based on the QB play... but not all.

    • @KevinDorsi
      @KevinDorsi 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @AcePerHead or one could argue that with protection and time opposing secondaries have more time to work the receivers, more recovery time etc and then Tua loses his windows to throw and the play is broken. It's never all this or all that, there's obviously a lot of truth in what you're saying. But with now 2 WRs in the top 10 pay range and Tyreek wanting to make more... and then paying Tua top of the line money.... that O line will never be what people want it to be as well as other areas of the roster. Additionally they are an outside zone run team before anything else, that's their identity. That requires a level of agility and athleticism in linemen that just traditionally doesn't bode well for trying to hold long pass blocks.
      Summary: every offensive SCHEME has strengths and weaknesses and ours is being operated pretty much as desired. Tua is an above average but not elite QB that wants elite money. Trading Tua and Hill at the deadline should happen if they can't figure out deals for both. They are a package.

    • @KevinDorsi
      @KevinDorsi 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @roguebossa my thing is I wouldn't use the word "good" offensive line, maybe "different type" of offensive line. Our line (imo) is not bad at what they do by any means but they are built specifically for the outside zone run scheme and RPO / playaction that plays off of that scheme. They just aren't meant to hold pass blocks long or beat a bull rush. They are all finesse and the more I watch, the less I feel it's to protect Tua or mask a deficiency but rather its just McDaniel running the offense McDaniel wants to run. And with Tua that offense does flourish I just feel like Tua isn't the clutch hero put the game on his back qb that deserves top paid salary. I also hesitate to call him a "system QB" but basically we just need to stop looking at the schemes weaknesses and begging for them to change. Every scheme has weekness but this one is built and executed very well.

    What percentage of the pressure came from defenses feeling emboldened to blitz? If you blitzed Brady, he'd more often than not torch you, so you'd be more circumspect about when and how often you'd do it.
    Obviously, there's a lot more to it than 'Tua's this' or ''the OL's that'. Are there any comparable stats between the two for when defenses pass rush with four and/or use disguised zones?

      Brady 2020 30% blitzed, 2021 30% blitzed, and 2022 24 % blitzed. Tua 2021 31 % blitzed, 2022 25% blitzed, and 2023 22.7%... all this favors the protection of Tampa and allows some more opportunities for Brady overall beyond 2021 for Tua. Notice how when he went to 2.13 clean time the blitz dropped... just like Tua... it's the way to offset the quick throw when the protection isn't hot because you can stop the run and get pressure and clog the lanes. Great question... I should have added that. Thanks.

Tua is not playing on that 5th year option. Grier consistently plays hardball with guys he drafted. Only exception was Waddle. Failing to give Tua a "market contract" will doom Dolphins for years to come. What is the alternative to Tua? If I'm Tua, I am "holding in". Let Grier figure it out.

    The quick game is effective when precise and Tua has become a top facilitator at it if not the premier guy. But this attack can be SHUT DOWN; not slowed down, shut down. So much so that it forces McDaniel to start shrinking back into a shell. Once McGase goes there Tua reaches a point where he doesn't even want to throw anymore. Against Baltimore, McDaniel refused to just run the ball and the clock to just get the a$$ whooping over with. So incomplete after incomplete lead to Tua checking out and lazily leading his receivers from one dangerous hit into another. Regardless of the highs against chumps, you can't survive these catastrophic lows against the better defenses.

      It all start with the OL... OL creates the size of the menu for an offense and sets the table for what any offense can do. I think like Shanahan he can get too cute, but I also think he knows his OL can't block between the tackles and that creates an issue as you can shell up to cover the pass and edge runs... so, I mostly agree with you, brother.... just for me, the prime mover (not only mover of course) is the play of the blockers.

    When Brady first came to the Bucs, he immediately wanted (and got) to draft a pass protection. It's all a matter of security and comfortability. Compare that to Tua who had none of that throughout his 4 years. Last year when they were all healthy, you can see Tua at his best.
    Yet now, they (Dolphins) want injury guarantees built-in the contract when they themselves passed on it this year when they could have fixed it. If they have done so, then this contract negotiations demanded it from Tua, then it would be a different story. Grier continues to laugh off the O-Linemen needs and selects flashy pass rushers and CBs, but continues to fail.
    If you listen to all the reviews from other teams that selected O-Linemen in the first round, even the ones that we passed on like Barton, JPJ, Morgan, Haynes, Beebe, etc, , they all are gaining amazing reviews. JPJ already got the respect from CW and Max Crosby. Yet, we selected Patrick Paul, and he continues to learn the basic fundamentals off to the side and against UDFAs. How, stark can you be?

      Thanks for the thoughts... but it could also be the lack of OL ability... or both. Think of it this way: there are 3 ways to mitigate pressure: A) screens ( we escalated them highly as the season went on to a very high %), PAs & extra blockers ( we were in the bottom 10 in each not sure the exact though), and speed of throw ( we raised our clock by .22 -- huge increase). Yet we still had high pressure (host of stats to prove that... actually worst true pass set grade by a OL in 14 years by a country mile). If someone is bad at something do you increase the speed with which they do it or slow it down? If you have a guy who is a slow processor do you lessen the ol and then lessen the run game and protection time or do you improve it? Before Tua we've had the same problem....poor OL. Tanny went to the Titans with a better Ol and system for his skillset and went to COnf game... here he didn't win jack. So, this is my train of though... next PC will show you Dan Marino and what the OL meant to him and also the blitz rates for Tua and Brady as a side bit of data... I made sure to EXPLICITLY say that in like the 1st min brother... and then for the rest of the PC. Football basics: you mitigate pressure on offense with screens, PA (adding more blockers), and speeding up the throws... and Brady was the second fastest thrower in history and his offense increased it's speed of throw and shortened up the routes to make up for decreasing pass protection ... just like Miami did... or any offense... in fact, Burrow did the same things this season.

    I'll start out by saying I've never disliked Tua, however. as of now I can NOT put him anywhere in the same sentence with Tom Brady, comparison or no comparison. Nice kid (Tua), pretty good skill set but as you clearly said, the reason he throws quickly is to off set the inefficiencies or inadequacies of the offensive line. IMO on the surface this is a good plan but BETTER Defensive Coordinators will find a way to jam receivers and force Tua to make other reads and get him off his game. Hopefully, those "other reads" this year will include a steady dose of Achane out of the backfield and Smith (TE). He simply cannot continually rely on Hill and Waddle. No BALANCE, NO BUENO!!! This offense is somewhat exciting but as a Dolphins fan for 50+ years I'd LOVE to see a lot more running BETWEEN THE TACKLES. I'm definitely old school and would prefer a Smash Mouth style of football but I realize they aren't built for that. It would help though if the GM and the Nutty Professor (McDaniel) didn't make stupid ass comments and laugh saying, "Ahh, you are all worried a lot more about the Offensive Line than we are"! My prediction as of today: 9-8 possibly 10-7

    • @AcePerHead
      @AcePerHead  5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      it's not about the comparison except the philosophy drivers. NO QB WANTS to get it out fast... NONE! OCs and QBs want the clock to drag on as long as the protection hold 95% of the time. So why the quick throws? You could say because of his skills, maybe he can't read if you want, BUT the PA and screen levels (along with other things) clearly say it's more than that. Brady never threw that fast in NE or Tampa early, but the OL defciets drove the shorting of routes and speed of throw... this is a basic football philosophy to offset pressure. Our volume of edge plays is another red flag. I think when you consider the leverage we can create with the skills (next PC) we should see more reading oppertunies this season with more WR in route... I'll cover this next Pc... but this isn't to say Tua this or that... but if we had Phillies OL you'd see a totally different O... there are so many screaming red flags that say why we do what we do in a large part... in my eval, brother.
