Taran suggested that this season would hit a lot harder on a full 40-season rewatch. I can confirm! I watched every single season this year over six months. WaW felt so much like the ultimate culmination of emotions, characters and gameplay that I had to say it was my favorite season by the end. If I ever rewatch it again, it'll be at the end of another full-series rewatch. So good!
What I still remember most about this season is Tony being picked dead last in the RHAP player draft and all the rumors swirling around, some of which proclaimed that Tony would win but it just seemed all so farfetched, even though I wanted them to be true. And then the slow realization of "Wait a minute, he really IS gonna win this, isn't he?" - The extremely unlikelyhood of Tony winning from the perspective of the preseason to him actually being able to overcome the odds is why I love this season so much.
I agree. It's funny bc there's a youtube video somewhere (I think it's still on the survivor youtube channel) where in the comments some dude is like "How did Tony make the merge?"
I honestly probably have this in the low 20s/ high thirties as they should have divided the tribes along old school and newer school lines to allow the legends to actually play. That and Ben and Denise basically giving up really hurts it
To me this season was my favorite in terms of live watching only because of Tony my whole family was rooting for him and a lot of my family were friends with him because they a lot of them work in the jersey city police department with him
A more balanced old school/new school cast, longer episodes and the return of the old-school tribal music would've made this season 100% better. We were robbed of seeing Hatch, Tina, Todd, Vecepia, Tom, Chris and Earl return.
Nick fan. He got to 6 with a chance to win allegedly. Gets as invisible an edit on the show and on this podcast :(. Overall loved the analysis though guys
As I watched this I slowly realized this season might be my favorite even above HvV, and that got absolutely confirmed after the fire making challenge that finally defeated the CopsRUs alliance. After crying for the 10th time this season I knew this one was just special to me. They really honored and featured nearly all of these past winners and I just loved it.
Wow Taran randomly mentioning Solitary brought back a flood of memories and now here I am watching season 1 after buying it on prime video. Good times.
This is the season that turned me into a super fan. I’d come in and out of survivor over the years- the only ones I watched live were Australian Outback, Amazon, Tocantins, Samoa, Heroes and Villains, Nicaragua, and Redemption Island. I’d forgotten about survivor until I saw this season announced, and decided to come back in. Midway through watching the show, my wife was curious about it, so we started watching every season of the show that featured a winner. So in truth this is what turned me into an obsessive. Because of this season, I watched most previous seasons knowing who the winner was but nothing else. It’s as if I watched Avengers Endgame, loved it, and then went back and watched the rest of the MCU to fill in the gaps. And now I’m auditioning to be on the show.
Amazingly good fortune that we got 40 in the books before the hiatus! Seeing how the new era has changed the game, it feels good knowing the old times finished with some good closure.
This season has its upsides and downs that is heavily benefited by who won. If anyone in the final 6 outside of Tony or Sarah won I don't know if this season ranks in the top 10 let alone top half. I personally have this season as a borderline top 10 season probably around 11 or 12 because of Tony playing an excellent game and being a fun TV character the whole way through. Would've been higher if there was no edge of extinction, I hated everything from the edge.
Unpopular opinion: I don't think the boot order was entirely targeted at the old school players. Here's my evidence: 1. The first boot was Natalie (new schooler) 2. Amber was only targeted because she was married to Rob so they are eliminating a power couple 3. Danni only went home because she couldn't control her paranoia and I would argue that her paranoia and voicing that there was an "old school" alliance was the biggest catalyst of starting to eliminate all of the old schoolers 4. Rob was eliminated next but I think his threat level was entirely too high having just literally been and "idol" on season 39. He was playing very hard, not controlling his threat level, and didn't seem to even try to form any alliances with the new schoolers (based on what we are shown). He could have stayed longer if he had played a game more similar to Tony 5. Parvati is a person who has played effectively too many times to be ignored in this season. She can't really do anything about her threat level and realistically didn't have a path to victory in this season 6. Sandra was literally only eliminated due to poor play. She wasn't being targeted in her vote but was eliminated due to an idol that she gave Denise to vote her out. 7. Yul wasn't initially the target of his boot episode but was later targeted because he showed how good of a strategist he was which scared Nick to take him further At the end of the day I recognize that new schoolers were eliminated first but I don't think it was only due to targeting but also due to their actions that resulted in their demise.
I really enjoyed this podcast and I was able to agree with a lot of the pros more than I did originally. However I would still also love an episodic breakdown at some point if yall or another panel would be willing. The insufficient run time really hindered my viewing experience of WaW. By the end of the season I was just pissed that I had no clue what actually happened during the game. It was almost a GOT season 8 situation where I couldn't appreciate any of the great things about it because I was just screaming at the television. A full breakdown might help me even more haha.
Ok I do love Winners at War as a season there is a glaring problem with the season and that is the power of the fire tokens. Like It shouldn't be beneficial for a player to be voted out first but with the way they did fire tokens it is. Sarah said that they weren't able to purchase all the same things the people on the edge were so they couldn't get by idols or advantages like the people of the edge could which to me was unfair like Sandra completely nuked her game for fire tokens which at the end of the day is pointless unless you were on the edge
I guess the reason I ranked this lower was because of the boot list. My heart broke watching Ethan, BR, Parv, Sandra, and especially Yul (my fave winner). I am also not a big Tony and Sarah fan. The only person I was rooting for after the merge was Jeremy and Michelle. The best part of the season for me was gaining so much respect for Michelle and finally understanding her win.
I've never been so hyped for a season. I turned 18 during the season and lots of these winners I never got to see play live and Tony was my favourite player before this season. The boot order hurts for sure but this is in my top 3 with Cagayan and HvV
I think she could of gotten far , especially since she is not a widely respected player or winner . She could of slipped in the cracks and been seen as a goat to drag along, though I think she is smart and a good player
She might still go out in the same spot tbh, she’s probably the least useful in the challenges out of everyone on her original tribe and it seems like she didn’t really go into the season with many pre-game alliances
@@bigbuffguy9589 Winners at War. The only good thing about it is Tony, but that's not enough. I need big moves and big blindsides from an all stars cast, and there were none.
been watching this a lot and I have to say this season almost really sucked. not having tribes old school / new school tribes automatically eliminating almost all the old fan favorites... splitting into three tribes with how many advantages were at play (steal a vote should not even be a thing in tribes of 5), basically nullifying strategy for that part of the game... denise, ben, and michelle being carried to the final 6 with 2 of them not really caring about winning... not very good. a season of the best players and personalities almost ruined by bad production choices. thank god for tony
I had this season ranked at #2. For this season, I have a bit of a recency bias but also like Taran said, this season hits better on a rewatch when you watch the seasons in order, which is what I did when I made my rankings. With that being said, I don't think we'll ever be able to see another winners at war in the show's history which why I have it ranked higher because this season is unique in its own way. 20 winners coming back, and I honestly was stoked to see what all of them could do. It was great to see old-schoolers like Rob, Yul, Parvati, Amber, Ethan, and Danni all come back even if they got booted early on, which was sad. I get why people would be upset at this season either due to the boot order whether it was due to people being their favorites out early or racial/political motives for rooting for certain people. In my opinion, you shouldn't let those outside thoughts influence your judgment on a season. I wanted to see someone like Yul win, but I was happy with the outcome of the season. Even all the whispering I felt added a layer of unpredictability that we hadn't had on the show before, although I wish we did get to see more. I thought Tony's win was absolutely stellar, and all the emotional and intense moments that came along the way makes this season truly iconic. Denise's idol play on Sandra, Adam's podium "idol", and Tony vs. Lacina in the final fire challenge were amazing moments. Even people like Ben and Michelle who I didn't really feel were that great before really earned my respect in this season. Overall, this season is iconic in its own right, and I feel you have to look at this season in a bit of a different light, but it was truly a celebration of a season, and despite having fire tokens and the edge of extinction in there, I still regard it as a highly acclaimed season on the show.
@@MrBringiton23 How the heck is Pearl Islands still in that was such a boring season. David vs Goliath should easily be top 5 along with winners at war

The one thing that would've made this season one of my all-time favorites is if Yul had made the merge instead of Wendell. Michelle and Nick made the wrong choice voting off Yul and they paid the price the following episode when Wendell was sent packing. I know that multiple contestants from this season said that Wendell had a really bad edit, but even if that was the case he was still not the same likable and charming Wendell from 'Ghost Island'. It was like when Stephenie LaGrossa returned for 'Guatemala'. Stephenie was a heroic underdog in 'Palau', but when she came back for 'Guatemala' it was like her evil twin was playing instead. The Wendell I remembered from 'Ghost Island' was only seen during Ponderosa videos and I just wish he had been that way while playing the game in this season. Since he wasn't, I think Tom Westman or Mike Holloway would've been better choices than him. The same can be said for Earl Cole, but he declined the invitation since his wife had a new baby.
The three had a pre-season alliance, Yul didn’t stand a chance that tribal (and neither did Parvati before him, Michelle only voted with her to get her fire tokens)
I agree with you all about how exciting it was gonna be to finally get an all winners season, and see all these players come together. The culmination of 20 years in epic fashion. But that's exactly why it was so disappointing that they COMPLETELY ruined it by including the worst twist in Survivor history - Edge of Exwhatever stupid thing it's called. The likely only time we'll ever get a winners season and it's completely wasted - down the drain - absolutely heartbreaking. I'm still bitter about it.
@@Drake_Dimes Not true at all. I mean yeah getting to see all these people we love play again was awesome, but there were so many epic moments and moves. I also really enjoyed the edge this season. Overall a fantastic season
I have always disagreed about people’s feelings on KIM she first played with a bunch of players not very savvy to the game similar to Boston Rob’s win. THEN she comes backs and plays with players who know how to play and she crys cus she can’t handle it .
This season was alright to me, it wasn’t bad just disappointing to me. They definitely had a recent season bias and they could’ve picked more legends. Or people who’ve already played 3 and 4 times, when some only played twice or once. I would’ve like to had Tom, Chris D, Tina, and ESPECIALLY Hatch on. Its not all Winners without the Father of Survivor. But judging the season on its own, its fine. It did close some arcs, the boot order wasn’t horrible just not great. It was fine to me. Season felt too safe to me basically, and it was rigged to begin with, because they cast to many new winners, the older ones were screwed. I know people call it the end of an era, and a celebration of the entire show, to me it felt more like a celebration of the last 5 years, not 20. what it was its mid tier for me. I do understand the love for it though.
I agree about Hatch. It's kind of a trivial thing, and I get it wouldn't be a fantastic look after 39, but still... Hatch was absolutely essential casting for this theme.
@@cameronschiff132 Agreed, i don’t think it even matters it just feels dirty not putting him on. I understand the not good look but they could just add a no nudity rule, shows they’ve barely grown from the situation at all still. I know he was a lock until the last 2 days. Which is a great shame.
@@Captain_Subpar I'm staying my opinion. I'm not saying it should be just my opinion. I enjoyed it because tony won, and copsrus in general. The story between tony and Sarah is so amazing.
I thought it was a disappointment, they should’ve put Hatch and older winners on as the season was pretty rigged and felt like it didn’t live up to the name, it felt like a celebration of the last 5 years of the show and not 20 to me, the boot order wasn’t bad just tough. I understand the love and passion for it though. To me personally it just felt like Game Changers 2, but i respectfully see your point and opinion.

I know why they didn’t bring him back, i’ve seen his videos but that happened after he was kicked. He was kicked because he has a “nudity problem” which i think is really stupid, i think its not All Winners without Hatch. Its just disappointing and feels dirty to me. The season is again fine it just feels underwhelming personally. It had potential but didn’t meet it. But yeah the other winners i do understand. I know they didn’t bring Todd back so he doesn’t relapse which i understand.
I know this was a fan vote but IMO this is disrespectful, waw was a top 3 season easily imo, HVV Cagayan waw china and dvg
@@sonicplushycentral6818 hatch wasn't coming back due to talking crap about Jeff and survivor, jt isn't coming back due to drug issues in game changers with locals, mike isn't playing again he said, I personally would've liked Chris underwood instead of Adam JS
I know Hatch and Tina both got cut at the same time which both should’ve been back, they could’ve definitely put Vecepia, Chris D, Tom Westman, Aras, and i know Earl got cut last second.
@@sonicplushycentral6818 I would've wanted Tina over Dani or amber
