I've done paint and body. For over twenty years. Started laying fiberglass and gelcoat. Completely different animal. Resin and gelcoat is so much harder than base coat clear coat. But I do add 2k urethane clear. To the gelcoat. Gives it a nice high gloss finish very pretty.
I don’t think that would give you the desired result, although I have never tried that. Try mixing 25 or 30 percent Duratec 904-001 with your gelcote and spray several thin coats. It won’t look like a painted surface but it will look pretty good as long as you are not trying for perfection.
I use a 3/8” nap roller. Griptex additive, coarse by Algrip. Apply 3 thin coats . That should make a good surface. Allow time to fire off between coats.

Yes no wax in gelcote. Mold is waxed before gelcote is applied.

Your final coat should be Flow coat, which is gel coat with wax in it. The wax stops the coat from being tacky.
