    This video helped me more than any of the other ones that had the dude adding a ton of different additives and stuff. I like the simple method, maybe a little more sanding involved but it’s simpler that way.

    Hey Ricky. Your "How to's" are brilliant. No nonsense straightforward. Making a really daunting task simple. I got my first 14 foot boat 5 months ago. I knew it was going to need a little work. However turned into a can worms! I'm OK with glassing. It's the rest I'm unsure about. Couldn't of been better timing as I'm now moving onto gelcoat and then paint it in the winter. Thanks you for the videos. I look forward to seeing more of restoration and up keep of boats.💪🤙😎

    My experience is that there is a great loss of gel coat in the high ridges that is sanded down. Try getting a long piece of cellophane that's as wide and long as the area that you're working on, and [using a friend], stretch it out the length of the freshly applied gel coat and allow it to bond with the gel coat at the center and slowly lay it into the gel coat until it reaches the ends so air is not trapped inside. You can not shift the cellophane after contact or a mess will happen. After running a straight edge over the cellophane lightly the gel coat will be absolutely flat so sanding off the cellophane is a snap, with almost no gel coat loss.

    I've sanded out some scratches, it all looks smooth in some light, but in others it still looks matte rather than shiny. Worked on it forever, sponge and buffer. How do I know if I'm using the correct polish?

    Thanks for the video, maybe we have different terminology in Australia, but my understanding is gelcoat is unwaxed, flow coat is waxed. Aren't you cut and polishing flowcoat ? or have I got it wrong ? thanks, John.

    Very helpful videos; many thanks for doing these. I have done a number of sailing dinghy restorations but have always used paint (Brightside or two part epoxy) as boat were being dry sailed. Now doing one that will be wet sailed so gelcoat is the primary choice. Really had no clue the difference vs paint and this answered a lot of questions. Thanks again.

    May be for the sanding can be better using water instead the dry sanding .... Less dust more healthy and the surfaces stay more clean (the dust washed and stay down with water) .....

    The result was amazing! Just a quick question, just before you buffed out, you sanded with 600 grit, so that was the last sand paper grit? You did not sand with 1200 before polish?

    • @westcoastprojects01
      @westcoastprojects01  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I started with 120 grit then all the way up to 1200 grit . You can go even finer with the discs but that worked well enough for that finish

  • @christopherdougherty2312

    Although I do respect what you've done here. I prefer spraying. Often I can start sanding with 320 or even 400 grit,then continue with 600,800,1200,1500 ,2000 and finishing with a 3000 grit pad . All on the sander.no buffer. Just a couple coats of wax. Smoother than a dolphin.

    Thank you for posting , really helping me to decide between painting and gel coat ! Was the majority of your boat surface painted or gel coated ? Mine has gel coat and have no clue as to if gel coat can be applied over the top of original gel coat or will I have to sand down to fiberglass? I would rally like to be able to use gel coat on my sailboat but if it has to be taken all the way down to fiberglass may just end up painting with the alexseal system and their new additive to roll the paint on.
    Thanks again for taking time to post very informative !

      Mine was painted over gelcoat and reacted bad . That's the only reason I sanded mine back to fibreglass. If yours is gelcoat a good polish will bring it up like new again . Or just give it a key and go over the gelcoat base

    that is pretty impressive from dry 600 to buffing/polish,
    but becarefull dont go to fast and get to hot. and keep your sand paper clean.
    i like to do this with a bit of spray water and then more water and do 1000 sanding.

    Great educational video mate. I bought a 1980 Jeep CJ5 about 2 years ago. It has a fiberglass tub/body & has a jelcoat (white) finish that they painted a blue automotive paint. My question to you all is this: Would it be easier to strip the paint off & jelcoat it or can I just shoot another layer of auto paint over it? I'm leaning towards striping the old paint off & shooting a nice jelcoat on it. What's your thoughts on it?

    The two videos are terrific! I repainted my aluminum fishing boat with rattle cans and the effort spent trying to stop runs was huge. I don’t think the end result was particularly “thick” and my bumpers scuffed off the surface pretty quick. Would it be possible to roll the paint on in more thinner coats to eliminate the heavy ribbing ?

    • @westcoastprojects01
      @westcoastprojects01  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks mate . You can roller on paint as well as brush it on . The paint probably won't stick to the bumpers due to the type of plastic/ rubber there made from . Might be worth trying an etch primer

      Automotive Paints can look good on boats but are much less durable. They will scratch much easier, and chemicals like gasoline may lift/ruin your finish.
