The land that time forgot indeed. That's exactly how it felt the minute I stepped off the boat. Everything closes on a Sunday still! This includes children's play parks too. There are signs up everywhere. WOW
Liked the comment about "not getting arsey" about people's perceptions of photography . Fully agree. It's all about yourself. Looking forward to seeing you at Batley Camera Club in the not too distant future. Regards Mike
That was most entertaining, I think if you spent the night in that house there would be a visiting of the spiritual type. Thanks for sharing. All the best..................Peter.
Funny, with that square on black and white of the red corrugated metal sheet covered house I instantly thought, I'd move to the right to separate that wind swept tree... and your next shot was exactly that! Great Minds eh :P Cheers Gary, awesome place!
06.53 "Wokanabee" I believe you have invented a new word, lol. Easy to forget in the winter when the weather is a bit iffy it would sort the boys from the men living here. Interesting video, thanks for sharing.
lol, I had to go and check it :) Yeah I can imagine how hard it must be living on the Island during the winter. Having said that, I'm lead to believe it doesn't snow much there? Is this right?
A Welshman surrounded by sheep...............sayin nothing! :D Nearly as bad as the Isle of Man for abandoned cars! That shot of the house from behind looking out to sea is a corker! Also, the shot you ended on. Beautiful photos. Loving this series in the Isles. Just catching up after a busy Christmas.
Another great video Gary, you have a great eye for the incredible, btw the red van is still listed with DVLA with the last V5 being issued on 4th July 2012 and it was 'born' in November 1998, so not too old.
Been finding lately that a lot of the "new" videos pushed out on YT are simply recycled stuff from other photographers. No one could ever accuse you of that Gary. Your videos are so original and very different from others out there. Brilliant, really great work, I look forward to the next one.
Unbelievable place! Might sell up and go pick myself a house and shack up. In shock! Love things like this. All them years it’s been left like that! Crazy Gary! Cracking video. My eldest was fascinated! Really enjoyed Gary!
An interesting and different take on one of my favourite island Gary..lovely moody images ..not the ones the Hebridean Tourist Board put in their brochures !!
Great video, Gary! You've captured some great images there. We were in Harris in October and you're absolutely right, there's a composition wherever you look. We too were amazed at the number of abandoned houses, but it was explained by some old chap we met, that it was often cheaper to build a new house there than bring a dilapidated home up to standard. The drummer from the band The Buzzcocks, John Maher, lives on Harris and has become a bit of a specialist in capturing knackered old homes. He's worth checking out. Thanks for posting and keep up the excellent work!
Wish I could buy that Island, i'd turn it into an art retreat. Or just repair one of the old houses then getaway there ever so often. Bring my buddies, shoot pic. at nice light, then drink beer, watch football and watch Landscape Photo H&R for the rest of the time.
Great video, entertaining and educational with lovely shots. But how did you light the abandoned house up from inside .? What light source did you use ? Regards Simon
Great video very entertaining looking forwards to the next part. I go to Harris & Lewis regular with some pals and have seen all the places you went many of those building were in far better condition when we first went. In 2017 the red van at the start had a blow up Santa in the drivers seat holding a can of red bull! Did you find the bus shelter with the nearly life size Santa animatronic stored in it?
What a cool location with lots of possibilities to photograph. Another entertaining video Gary. By the way, I have a proper 1970 MG Tourer and that abandoned, poor excuse-for-an-MG was a fitting end to that POS vehicle. The lads that took that out for it’s final joy ride did the motoring world a favor!
Hi Gary, 5 years later than you presented this video, the red van is still on SORN but the last MOT was way back in May 2009 sadly, dont think it had a hard life engine wise as its last MOT was showing around the mid 60k ...so plenty of life left in the old girl yet.... Before you say... yes I know..sad git comes to mind checking all this crap out... but its just me sorry... excellent vid as usual though.... back to binge watching...lol... Yoki..
I love how you always keep your inner child, and are always amazed at everything. I am the same. But seeing all these abandoned houses makes me wonder: why? Did the people die and no one cared for their belongings? Did they leave in a hurry for some reason? I feel sad everytime you show them. And seriously: there is no one taking care of those abandoned buildings and cars in this island?
Amazing stuff! Both the island & the photography! I’m curious what the camera settings were to capture that final shot. I really enjoy your videos and your photos. Thanks.
What a luck to score 2 great photo opportunities, only thing what was missing is running into a mini bus full of blond female Swedish volleyball players looking for a great spot to do their annual lingerie shoot :) :) again, great vlog Gary and you enthusiasm is contagious.
Hi Gary. How weird is it finding all that abandoned stuff? I guess there's a sad side to it all in terms of later generations needing to be on the mainland for economic reasons. A real shame for such an idyllic place. You've really captured the mood of the island with your images. The last image nails it for me - stunning! Really enjoying this series from Harris & Lewis. Many thanks for sharing Gary.
As an islander myself, an Arranachd however, my great, great great grandmother was from Barra, what you saw is normal island life. Due to the island, ferry and distance from the mainland, that is the main reason why cars are left where they are and the odd scattering of homes left to ruin from a short time ago to that of when the clearances took place. Sheep and livestock in general roam free within many areas of Scotland, nothing new there, likewise for single track roads. For anyone watching, please be respectful to any building be it ruin or not, more so on the islands. At some point they were someones home, in rare occasions family still own such places but now live elsewhere or on the mainland, also family may also be buried nearby. Likewise for drone use, permission is required on National Trust for Scotland, Historic Scotland, Local Authority areas, even public space still requires great care and in some cases the correct permission and certification. The outer isles have there own magic, I am biased because of my upbringing on Arran. Please visit Arran and the other isles as they too have a magical photographic draw that melts any heart and soul. Also try and visit Argyll' Secret Coast, where treasures of all kinds can be found. Great vlog and always a subscriber to Gary Gough... paulpatersonphotography.smugmug.com/
It's an amazing place and that's partly due to the dumped cars and decaying houses. Such a unique place to live or visit. Totally right about respect for the buildings 👍👍👍👍
Yeah, this is what I've heard too. They are all over the Island. There are posh new-builds just yards away from buildings just like the one I captured. Very strange
they had one storm, it revealed cars from 50 years ago, but l have a new name for you Gary "No Drones Gary" Try the road to nowhere, its true. Lm glad you are liking Harris and Lewis, as for the buildings, they are owned by the family, but the kids don't want them, they are living on the mainland.Cheers for now Phil
A couple of years back I visited and stopped just up from the MG. An amazing place and greatly documented by the former Buzzcocks member, John Maher. johnmaher.co.uk/nobodys-home/ All the items in Baby Blue were still present although I believe he had window dressed them for his shot. You did miss a trick. Luskentyre Beach. No one should visit Harris and not experience it. Should you ever return it's a must for you. The only photographer that I follow religiously is yourself. Entertaining , informative and with a finished image that is always beautifully taken. Keep up the good work.
Wicker man springs to mind
Scary huh :) Cheers Peter
Infinitely beautiful, infinitely exciting!! A true artist of nature. Congratulations and thanks.
Cheers Alan 👍👍
Brilliant video Gary, some fantastic images as always.
Welshman and sheep, sure there's a joke in there somewhere....,😆😆😆😆😆😆
Many thanks
John

I am really looking forward to going in a couple days now. After a recap of your videos.
Excellent work as always Gary, an island full of photographic treasures
It is indeed Darren, cheers
How interesting & some good shots to boot. The land that time forgot.
The land that time forgot indeed. That's exactly how it felt the minute I stepped off the boat. Everything closes on a Sunday still! This includes children's play parks too. There are signs up everywhere. WOW
AAAmazing place, that MG was so cool & the houses, wow makes you wonder about the story that's lay behind each, thanks Gary
A very intriguing place :) Cheers Trevor

What an incredible place, so full of contrasts! Amazingly captured! I definitely need to go there
It's an amazing place, well worth a visit 👍
That was most entertaining, I think if you spent the night in that house there would be a visiting of the spiritual type. Thanks for sharing.

Nice one Gary! What did you use to light the house in the last shot?
Just a couple of LED torches. I should have vlogged it, sorry
@@GaryGough Thanks for the tip! What about using a remotely triggered flash?
@@RugbyLock2668 Yep, that would work just as good
only just subbed so a bit, well very late, just wondered how the set the last shot up Gary,
Hi Gary, loved the last picture of the cottage. How exactly do you light the rooms from inside? (hope its not to obvious!) Cheers mate!
It's probably easier than you think. We just used torches. Bright LED torches. 👍👍
Thanks Gary. Sorry for late reply. Oh, I tried the telephone box number. 5 times. No one answered!
Great location and brilliant video. When are you going to do a “Night with Garry Gough” at your studio?
Thank you Mick, Maybe next year :)
Still giving you hard time about the drone? Loved all the images especially the last one!
I've bought a van instead :)
Get a workshop going Gary for that place.
That's why I visited. One more trip up and it'll be on for next year :) Cheers Mark
Drone help. Had you lost two drones by this time? LOL
I think I had yes. Technically I haven't lost 2 yet. I pressed the return to home buttone 2 years ago on one of them and I'm still waiting :)
lol the man who can lose a Drone in the sea any day of the week LOL
Brilliant Gary just followed you on Instagram if you get 5 take a look at my photos
Will do Gavin, cheers
That house, yikes.
lol, I went inside and videoed it. It was really creepy inside. I didn't add it to the video because it would have made the video too long.
@@GaryGough You represented the creepy factor well with both of those houses, even just with your short version. Well done :)

nooooo I would love to retire there. It's amazing!

Don't like it, too much like pollution to me. Wish they would just be cleaned out or renovated or dare I say knocked....
